Mike, I'd like to have it gone before I move to a new place sometime in late June or early July. When do you anticipate being up this way?

Similar story on two more items. • Mustache bar for '70-71 (forward mounted R-180) with nice OE-rubber bushings. Free for local pickup, or pay shipping (may be oversize). • Drive shaft for '70-71 (shorter length for use with forward mounted diff). As I recall, the u-joints are good, but no warranties on that. Again, free for local pickup, or pay shipping (may be oversize).

Here's a long shot—a free transmission. I've got a grubby-looking but known-good Type A 4 speed (correct for '70-71) sitting around here that I will never need. I had it in my yellow car until I parted it, and it was in the red car for a 1000 miles or so while I rebuilt the original. So I know it's good. No unusual noises, shifts fine. Here's the rub—I really don't want to mess with packing and shipping it. So this offer is probably not worth much to anyone who is not within driving distance of Eugene, Oregon. But if you can come get it, or can convince me to meet you on the road somewhere near here, it's free!
  4. I'll add that lots of RWD cars do this. Watch a 911 some time. Since the rear engine car is rather light on the front, the inside front may be several inches in the air - and that's normal. FWD are the other way around. I've got pictures somewhere (film, not digital) of my old Scirocco (with lots of sway bar) in an auto-x with at least 6" of air under the inside rear wheel. Watch a Rabbit on the track some time - it can be amusing.

I merged this second thread into the original where it belonged.
  6. A Beta is a Lancia, not an Alfa. Not that long ago I saw a reference to an "Austin Martin".... sigh.
  7. People. It's ALFA ROMEO, not ALPHA ROMEO. Please.

I have to admit that—even though my official responsibility ended when I handed it off to the transport driver—there is a huge sense of relief in knowing that it arrived safely. After weeks of winter to clean and fiddle with the car, I suspect you will be very familiar with the entire car long before you get a chance to really drive it, Terje.
  9. Later years had uncovered headlights and a truncated rear. The early ones with the rear you pictured and headlight covers are best.

Great news, Terje! It took longer than I would have thought, but it appears to have arrived safely. I know that you will be eagerly awaiting clear roads!

I've got an entire spare '70-71 transmission that I know is good, could be cleaned up and installed, or cannibalized for parts. But shipping it to Iowa could be a bit spendy.

    It's what I do, yes.

The wheels are a late '80s/early '90s knock-off of an original Enkei design. The knock-offs were made by several different companies, I'd need close-ups of both the front and back of the wheel to pin it any closer than that. As a first guess, I'd say American Eagle, or maybe Prime.
  14. If you find one you like here in Oregon, shoot me a PM. I've done the overseas bit, and could act as an agent for you. Others here might be willing to do this in other parts of the country.

I believe this is true.In the early years, the different transmissions had a different starter because the mounting angle on the automatic bell housing was different than the manual transmissions. The solenoid on one of the starters was in the was in the wrong place for one of the applications. In the mid-70s Nissan changed and started using the automatic starters on all cars. IIRC, the early auto starters will fit the manual transmission, but not the other way 'round.
  16. I don't think that's likely anymore. An officer doing a search like this for non-law enforcement reasons would be risking his job. Privacy concerns are rampant these days. Here in Oregon, years ago you could walk into a DMV office with a plate number, pay a small fee (couple of bucks) and get a complete printout of all the records of the car and its registered owner(s). Imagine trying that today!
  17. Still have to arrange shipment to the UK once you find it....
  18. There is no standard lever that will work for a late transmission (either 4 or 5 speed) in an unmodified '70-71 body shell. In the later transmissions the shift lever is about 1.5" farther forward (from memory, correct me if I'm wrong) than the early transmissions. You either need to enlarge the opening in the tunnel forward by 2" or so, or modify a later shift lever to fit the smaller opening. Here is an early shifter: Here is a (broken) modified late lever for early tunnel opening:
  19. Wrong. The shifters from the early 4 speeds are totally different design from the late transmissions. Not interchangeable. If you don't want to cut the tunnel, some people have cut/welded the 5 speed lever to work. The welding needs to be done well, I've heard of them breaking later.

Damn, Terje! They must have loaded it on the slowest ship in the fleet! I really was thinking that you should have received it by now.
  21. Welcome to CZCC.com, Wick! Any of us who have (or had) a copy of your book are familiar with that car - in print. Tracking it down might be tough, but it's possible that some of the members here may have a lead or two. Best of luck!

My wife and I still miss our Mk 1 Sciroccos....
  24. Never heard of him. Where in Oregon?
  25. After further review of my notes and pictures, you are right. The original RF tow hook (which is the only one intended for towing, and the only one supposed to be left on the car after PDI) is the same two-hole unit shown (located on the wrong side of the car) in your rotisserie picture. I know I've seen that two-plane mounted version somewhere before, but can't place it right now.
