The non-emissions 240Z unit. The points dizzy factory installed on 240Zs where emissions controls were not needed. Could be used on a 280Z, but you'd need a 240Z dizzy support pedestal plus Pertronix or suchlike.http://www.thezstore.com/page/TZS/PROD/PEIC01/12-4040 I believe the non-emissions dizzy uses the same points as the normal unit, so the Pertronix should fit fine.
  2. Not as an owner, but as someone who worked on cars in those years. 850i's always needed tires (an odd size, very expensive, and the choices in that odd size only lasted 4,000 miles per set), and the owners were always griping about things that broke or didn't work. I never knew any of my customers that kept an 850i longer than a couple of years. Everyone has different preferences, and if you liked it that's OK. I personally considered the styling very unimaginative and dull. Not surprising, considering the stodgy styling of the BMW sedans of the same vintage. E30s, E34s and such were also rather boring. Not so the previous models, nor the cars that came later. The late '80s and very early '90s BMWs had many virtues, but IMO good looks was not one of them. And while V12s are exotic and cool in that way, for normal cars I've always thought they were needlessly complex and expensive. Why use a complex V12 when a similar size V8 will do the same job? Now here I will need to disagree. I've owned 2 different 3ers, a graymarket '81 E21 323i (5 years) and a '96 E36 328i (7 years and counting). I've found both cars to be very easy and not all that expensive to maintain, as long as you shop around for parts and do the work yourself. According to what I saw there, the 850i was intro'd in '91, the 840CSi not until '93. That jives with my memory, which is definitely not infallible.

That's my plan too. And considering that the strap lists for $68 from Nissan, even after adding the cost of the bump stop in this looks quite reasonable in price.

The only time I used my spare module was when I gave it to EScanlon when his died suddenly and without warning at Canby in 2008.

Part 33, Nissan number 22472-E3000, still available from Nissan for around a buck and a half. Same price roughly from MSA. #12-4181.

I've heard the same issues with the E12-80 modules. I know of at least three that have failed here in the Pacific NW over the past couple of years. When I had the ZX dizzy on my car, I carried a spare E12-80 too.I ditched my E12-80 dizzy after I got fed up with the advance curve on it, and after the E12-80s failed on several friend's cars. If I have similar problems with the Pertronix, I'll just go back to points. The benefits of electronic ignition for a very stock L24 used as a weekend tourer aren't important enough to me to put up with failures. I've dealt with points for decades, it's not hard.

Both of mine bolt to the head as shown.
  8. I've re-keyed a Datsun ignition lock, but those are easy to open without damage. Not so the door and tailgate locks.

I've got the best of both worlds, then. With the Pertronix in my stock distributor I've got the reduced maintenance and hotter spark, but I pack my points in the tool kit. I can change back to points and be up and running in case of a failure in about 15 minutes or less. Simple, clean and reversible.
  10. Or if pillar-less coupes are important to you, the earlier BMW coupes (like this 3.0CSi) are much more beautiful. And much more expensive.
  11. The 8er's front end with hidden headlights has no style. ("Can you say, 'Pontiac Firebird?' Sure. I knew that you could.") And the rear is just as bland - could be an Accord coupe from the back. Give me an original 6er (preferably with euro-bumpers) any day. Like this one, perhaps...
  12. The 850i (V12) was an expensive, ugly, unreliable pig and they all deserved to be crushed. The later 840i (V8) was cheaper, quicker and far more reliable. It was still ugly, however...

Well, in defense of Oregon, it's not always as bad as you saw. But there are numerous times throughout the winter months when this weather is the norm, especially on the coast. (Not quite as much inland where I live.) Actually, while many might think that it was bad luck for your visit to coincide with a bad couple of weeks weather-wise, I think that may have been for the best. Better you see that weather first, than get here in the often beautiful fall weather, get settled down and THEN see what winter can be like.

Can't be confirmed, as the original records from Nissan are not available. But since '72 was the largest sales year of 240Z in the USA (over 50,000 sold), and white was not an uncommon color, and the info I've seen other places shows that ALL white '72s had red interior, I suspect the number was more than 1500. Maybe a lot more. On the other hand, just because "everyone knows" that all white '72s in the US had red interior doesn't mean there weren't exceptions. We are discussing 240Zs, after all.
  15. Gary, I've done it twice. Once on a wrecked car I bought specifically to part out, and later on the yellow car after I decided it was not financially feasible to repair it. It was worthwhile financially in both cases, but time-consuming. My advice would be to proceed only if you feel that you will get close to the initial investment ($1000) out of it yourself. Then anything you re-coup from selling parts will be gravy. In this case, the dash and the heater panel are probably enough to justify it in my mind, as long as you're OK with a '72 dash in your '71. Don't count on a lot of savings n the prep work of the body parts.
  16. The order and initial deposit have been received and confirmed by the manufacturer. Next milestone will be paper mockups sent to me for test fitting prior to running the real items. As of today, I have received payment from all people who indicated an interest save two. One of the two is still pending me working out international payment and shipping. The other hasn't replied since late September, so I'm going to consider that sunshade to be available. That means I will have two DATSUN and six 240-Z still available, so if you haven't gotten in yet, there's still time.

Maybe they do in Ohio. They aren't at all common anymore here in Oregon, haven't been for decades.

Some would argue that CB radio isn't pertinent. To anything.

Oregon is one of the two remaining states that does not allow self-service gas. Long-drawn out story there. For my normal cars that's OK, and the attendants are allowed to hand me the nozzle to fill my own motorcycle tank. But I have to get out of the Z anyway to warn them about the chain on the gas cap. I'd just as soon do it myself. But it's not allowed, so I live with it.

That's the Flow Guide Valve, part of the evaporative emissions control. It's basically there to provide a way for the engine to suck evap fumes from the expansion tank and burn them. The three ports should be routed as follows. The 'A' port goes to the rear of the airbox. The 'C' goes to the crankcase breather on the block (near the distributor). The 'F' goes to the rear of the car to the fuel expansion chamber that's mounted inside the car in the right rear above the fuel filler. The most recent part number I have for it is 14910-E8800, which still looks as it may be available from Nissan for less than $7.00. But I'm having problems imagining how this part could cause a radical loss of fuel economy even if it failed in some way. Assuming of course, that all the hoses are connected properly. I wonder if the line that runs to the rear of the car is connected to the wrong spot near the tank. Perhaps connected to someplace low on the tank itself, so the vacuum purge is actually sucking fuel from the gas tank itself and not fumes from the expansion tank.
  22. Also, there are currently eight (8) '240-Z' and two (2) 'DATSUN' sunshades still available. The rest are all pre-paid.
  23. The car apparently was sold to someone in Rhode Island.
  24. The order has been placed, with the required setup deposit.

Dave, if the demand get's too big, put me to the end of the list. I'm not in any hurry for one.
