  1. Lots of sources for resonated tips. Since I don't want yellow on my red car, I've been looking at either Hooker or Hedman tips instead. We talked about the lack of period exhausts a while back - http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34920
  2. The console is the '72 type, so that car is apparently a '72. Don't what that knob is from, though. And actually, the 240Z and other S30 models were available with 5 speeds from the beginning pretty much everywhere else in the world, other than North America.
  3. All the more reason for me to not worry about finding a Type A 5 speed for my car. Because once I had the transmission I wouldn't be totally happy until I acquired one of the small original 5 speed knobs for it. Since the knobs appear to be harder to find than the transmissions themselves, I best not even start.
  4. Ahh, the old Amco knobs. Nice, but not original.
  5. Ron, I've never seen an original 5 speed knob in person either. But your pictures of the five speed knob look exactly like my pictures of the current replacement 4 speed knob. I'd guess that the original 5 speed knob was really the same as the 4 speed but with a different emblem disk.
  6. Hard to find here in the US, as they never offered a 5 speed in a 240Z here. At one time new-datsun-parts.com had them, but they are listed as Out of Stock now.

Darrel is correct - the vents are vents, the heat only comes from the footwells (or the defrosters). After rebuilding a heater box or two, I can confirm that this is the way they were designed.

Well, note that while I'll pitch the '73s as best for a driver, I have a '71. Sure, I would have enjoyed all the improvements a '73 has to offer. But when you find one that's rust-free you buy it, no matter what year or color it is.

Actually, for a street car, I think the '73s (once you swap to roundtop carbs) are by far the best. All sorts of desirable improvements. Like intermittent wipers and retractable seatbelts, for example.

Series 1 cars in the USA (built through 12/70 or so) had speedos that started at 20. Later '71s had speedos that started at 0. (I have one of those.) By '73 they started at 10. I can't remember when the change from 0 to 10 was.
  11. for the gear lube to begin leaking out of the bellhousing that quickly sounds to me like damage to the transmission case, not the seal. Probably the countershaft slammed into the front cover hard enough to crack or hole it. I too would plan on finding a replacement transmission.
  12. Redline MT-90 is reddish in color.
  13. Transmission fluid leaking past the input shaft seal. The seal may have been improperly seated during the rebuild, but in my experience it is far more likely that the transmission was over-filled. Unlike most domestic transmissions, the Datsun transmissions are not supposed to be filled until the fluid starts dripping from the filler plug hole, but instead should have the proper measured amount of lube added. Don't ask me how I learned this... :stupid:

Actually, the electrical portion of the switch itself IS pretty universal. It fits all Zs and ZXs from '70-83. The wiring differences are in the wiring that connects to the switch, not the switch itself. New electrical switches (not including the ignition lock) run about $35.
  15. No way I'm driving 2500 each way in the hottest part of the Summer w/o A/C for Zcon. Thinking about MSA in April. Almost went last year, might be able to swing it this year.
  16. Mostly another year of small stuff, since the big stuff was back in 2008. Maybe a new exhaust, if I can finally decide what I want to build. That, and driving....

Marty, I'm a big fan of SUs, and love mine. But in my opinion for track use with an overbored L28 and a hotter cam, I suspect that the SUs will limit performance some. Not to say they won't work, because they will. But I figure a set of triples will bring it alive and get more out of the engine than the SUs can.
  18. More important than the motor is the condition of the white nylon spool shaft. If the shaft is intact, that's a rare part indeed.

I was wondering the same. Factory rear sway bar mounts, maybe? And would the weight difference be all that great once the bumpers were stripped off?

I suspect that just means Brian doesn't have any on the shelf right now. I'd drop him an email.

While I've never used them, I've seen these in person and they look like they'd do a great job. http://www.zccjdm.com/catalog.php/azcarbum/dt81970/pd1987788/ADJ._TENSION_CONTROL_RODS__ZCAR__510__
  22. Bearing in mind that I am not a lawyer, here is my understanding. Trademarks are not the same as copyrights. Copyrights can expire and enter the public domain if not renewed. Trademarks have no such time limitation, and are protected until/unless the owner abandons it. And since NGK still uses the same starburst and NGK lettering on their current products, I think it's safe to say they haven't abandoned it yet.
  23. Moved this to the Group Buy forum.
  24. I figure the complaints about the welding come from insecure punks who figure that the only way to make themselves sound knowledgeable is to bad mouth other people's rides, and the welding (which looks quite fine to me) is the only thing they can find to criticize. Ignore them. What you are building is a work of art - welding included.

We'd be better off as a country now if it had happened 20 years ago....
