Recaro or Slyline R32 GTR Seats???
Is there some weird camera angle thing going on cause in the second pic it looks like the top of the Recaro SRD JUST barely clears the top horizontal edge of the door... did you just bolt them straight to the floorpan? -e

FIA calipers, should i buy?
Hey Alan, Just curious, at the time when the vented Mk63 was available did Nissan produce some bespoke rotors for that application or were those vented ones off of another exisiting car? Obviously the 4x114 300ZX hadn't yet been made and I wonder what they used... Did the KPGC10 & KPGC110 Skylines have vented rotors up front? -e

Change Oil Pan While in S30?
I can confirm that for an L28 in a 240Z you need to raise the engine quite a bit to get the pan on/off... If you're fitting an Al cast oil pan with a baffle plate you'll have a VERY hard time getting it on if the tranny is also still attached... Don't ask me how I know. -e

Kenny G's first car: '71 240Z
ahahahaha watching F1 qualifying on Speed Channel right now and during the commercial break they had a blurb about Kenny G's first car being a yellow '71 240Z that he owned for 15years (his wife made him sell it - bad wife!) and he painted it black while he had it.... ahahaha Wonder where that car is now.... ahahaha -e

FYI Fairlady Z video
Have you tried calling one of the Kinokuniya Bookstores? There's several located in the States - I can think of locations in San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York and Houton if I'm not mistaken... The VHS copy is sold out but the DVD Zone 2 copy is still available as a special order. -e

Going Muffler-less
L28 + MSA header with straight pipes all the way back and out the center of the car sounds amazing... there's portions of the rev range if you're standing on the street listening to the car go by which honest to goodness sound like a 60s Ferrari V12... beautiful... way excessive for daily use by can sound SOO good... sennavsprost (Dave) and his flat black 72 have this exhaust on every once in a while and that's the car I've heard sound sooo good...

Checklist for temp. replacing 5spd w/ 4spd
i confirm mine is a 73 with the self-adjusting slave cylinder... ok great that should be a relatively painless temporary fix... wonder what the 4spd will feel like on my L28 with my 4.11 rear end... we'll find out soon enough... now to find that throwout bearing sleeve...

Checklist for temp. replacing 5spd w/ 4spd
So my 5spd's going away for a rebuild and I've got a house move coming up in 2weeks... Great timing, right? I thought I'd throw an old 4spd back on the Z just so I don't have to tow it to the new house... Other than making sure I've got the right collar onto which is pressed the throwout bearing (it's a different length than the 5spd one) is there anything else 4spd specific I need to make sure I have on hand? I'm racking my brain and everything else I can think of swaps over: driveshaft, tranny mount, shifter... right? -e

Help with unusual header I.D.(pictures)
Justin Is it bolted to the block? It looks like it might be... Or does it use the same kind of setup as on stock cars where it's nut/stud and oversize washer to hold both manifold and header at the same time? -e

Science of picking the right jet size - theory
I've been asking around for local Dell'Orto carb experts and have only tracked down a couple motorcycle guys who can't help me on a DHLB and a bunch of dead-ends where so and so just died unfortunately... I'll find someone...

Video: OS Giken TC16-MA2 and a LY-240Z racing
Although I've easily found multi-zone equipment in other parts of the world it's always proved somewhat difficult here in the States. And when you do find them it's some dodgy brand you've never heard of and don't know the first thing about. Oh well... Next time I'm in Australia I'll just swing by your place and ask to view the video... hahaha -e

Science of picking the right jet size - theory
The point is does it make sense to use another car's default jet sizes based on the fact it's got the same displacement and used the same carbs... does that reasoning hold? -e

What brand are these wheels?
Design wise they look very similar to the Campagnolos my car was originally fitted with when I bought it... Of course these have a lot more dish but the five spoke design looks REAL similar... let me see if I can find a pic of the ones I'm thinking of - you know like you find on old Ferrari 308? Here:

Science of picking the right jet size - theory
OK, Work with me here guys... My other 32yr old Japanese car has two dual throat Dell'Orto DHLB 35 carbs. Yes I know... tiny carbs - hahahah At least one car that was fitted with these same carbs from the factory was the 70s Lancia Fulvia 1.3 and 1.3s which were used as part of Lancia's rallying effort prior to the arrival of the Stratos. Well my Japanese engine is a bored&stroked 1200cc now with approx 1300cc displacement, but fitted with forged motorcycle pistons which bump compression up to roundabout 10.5:1 & it's got a factory racing cam with much more duration than stock... So with that said does it make sense for me to select my initial jet sizes based on what the Lancias ran with because their displacement is the same as mine? Another question: once I've measured combustion chamber volume in CCs, & I know my bore size, what's the formula for calculating my exact compression ratio?

Video: OS Giken TC16-MA2 and a LY-240Z racing
Alan I do know the Japanese VHS videos are NTSC - I've got a closet full of BM Video Specials which I really ought to burn to DVD one of these days on our Mac G5 just because of how much room they take up!!! The Racing Skyline (KPGC10, DR30 Iron Mask, BNR32 Godzilla) one which I've harped about on here again and again is my favorite of all... In fact I was going to get the Z special on VHS until my local Kinokuniya told me those had sold out in Japan and only DVD copies remained. My DVD player being a 5yr old Sony model - it won't play anything but Zone 1 DVDs... that's the bind I find myself in... so no BM Video Special #56 for me unfortunately... As for watching it on our computer I'm afraid that might not be a long term solution either... I'll tell you why: my sister has an iBook and lives in Europe and she noticed that when inserting a US Zone 1 DVD it will ask her if she's sure she wants to change Zones in order to view it... At the same time she can only switch back and forth between Zones a limited number of times (I think 5) before the computer will lock onto a specific one. It all has to do with the computer companies trying to protect international copyright laws. I guess I'll have to wait for Best Motoring International (the same people that translate "Iron Chef" for the USA to come out with their version and just watch it with the sound turned off ... what a shame... -e

Need Tranny WEIGHT...for Shipping Purposes
Larry mind if I ask what it cost you to ship Fedex Ground? Just curious about a ballpark... Christopher drivetrain.com is charging an estimate of $650 for a full rebuild (new seals/bearings/synchros) and more if they find something dramatically wrong inside. Turn around is supposed to be 3days although right now it's stretched to a week as they're pretty busy. -e

Ok well I'll quote 70lbs to UPS and see what they say... I did a search and only came up with weight concerns some people were having when switching from an R180 to an R200 -e

Need Tranny WEIGHT...for Shipping Purposes
Hi all, So I pulled my 5spd out this weekend with the intention of having the folks at drivetrain.com rebuild it. Only bummer is when I initially called, the person I spoke to said that for $50 they'd come pick it up from me... as it turns out when I called this morning to arrange this no one's ever heard of a deal like this and I need to ship it to them. Now having lugged it around all weekend I know it's heavy. But I don't know HOW heavy as I don't have a scale and I fear it may be just slightly too big for UPS. Does anyone have experience with sending their tranny somewhere? Did you use UPS or did you call your local freight company? -e

S13 240SX has R200?
So just so we've got this spelled out for everyone who wants to go this route: If you're going to use an LSD intended for a 240SX you ought to get an aftermarket one intended for a 240SX that came without LSD originally. If you get an LSD for a 240SX that came WITH LSD (it was a viscous unit) then you have to do additional legwork to get VLSD stub axles as regular ones won't work. Because your modern 240SX LSD uses 12mm gears to secure the ring gear you ought to be looking at getting an R200 rear end from an 84-9 300ZX because the 75-83 R200 have their ring gear attached by 10mm bolts like the R180. And if on top of that I want a 3.9 ratio I should be looking at an 87-9 NA 300ZX. I will need the stub axles that come with the differential and should be able to bolt my half-shafts to them. While I'm at it I will need the front differential mount, the mustache bar and the curved bracket that connects the two lower a-arms. Is that right? Did I miss anything? -e
