Sounds like you need the plastic one then. I don't think they used the metal tanks until sometime in 1971, maybe when the series II came out. I think I have a couple of the plastic tanks around here some where. -Mike

I agree and I'd list it on ebay too. -Mike

I agree that is should have the plastic tank, but I was just trying to confirm that is what he is trying to reinstall, not the later metal tank. I believe the metal tanks are a little larger, which is why the bump out in the right side plastic interior panel is also larger. Here is a picture of a stock plastic tank installed I found in an old thread, if that helps. -Mike

HLS30-01590 had the evap tank. I think that most US 240Zs had the evap tanks by then, especially ones sold in California. I have heard of a couple of later VINs that were originally delivered to Hawaii that didn't have them though. John, You do have the early plastic tank and not the later metal one, correct? I removed and replaced the later metal one on my 72 when I changed the hoses without any problems and i don't recall any tricks. Can you post a picture or two? -Mike

From my experience last year: I read the schedule of events and I see- Z car store hours- throughout the week-what does that mean? Is that just hanging out at the place, showing off your car? They have souvenir items like shirts, posters, etc available for sell. Last year it was just a room inside the hotel, so no place to park your car . Do folks bring any kind of canopies to put there car under for sun shelter? I didn't see any last year. I don't think that would be allowed at the car show, but I could be wrong. Is there a market place to bring Z items to sell, or does everyone do there on thing if they want to sell some stuff-or is this not proper show manners? Last year there was a pavilion next to the car show where some people brought parts to sell. Not sure if there was a fee for that or not. Chris Wenzel (26thZ) is on the ZCCA board and heavily involved in the show this year, so he could give you more definitive answers. -Mike

After looking through all my pictures of low VIN cars, it looks like the bracket change happened somewhere between HLS30-00248 and HLS30-00331 (11/69 production cars). Here are pictures of HLS30-00237 with the early bracket and HLS30-00331 with the later bracket (although it is hard to see next to the shredded braided hose). All the photos of later cars I have seen after #331 appear to have the later bracket. Based on that, I would say the red car in the 1970 brochure is probably not HLS30-00007. Good work Kats! -Mike

Hi Kats, You make very good points, especially about the support for the brake booster hose on the red car not being the one found on very early cars. I had not noticed that before. The wing nuts could have been changed easily, but why bother with that for such a small detail no one would notice? The early bracket is screwed on and the later bracket shown in the 1970 brochure is welded to the firewall I believe. All three of my 1969 production cars have the early bracket, but HLS30-01590 (a 1/70 car) had the later bracket, so I am not sure when the change was made. I think Carl was the one that identified the red car in this (1970) brochure as being HLS30-00007. See his posts starting with #188 in this other thread http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?t=25575&highlight=carl+1970+brochure&page=8. That thread (post #182) also has pictures of the early "Z432 style" bolts found on my HLS30-00032 and several of the other very early cars. -Mike

I think the attached brochure was the first in the US. It has a 1969 production date and shows a very early car without emblems, no radio or clock, etc. I think this is the same car used in the service manual and may be HLS30-00003. I think HLS30-00007 was also red and was used in the 1970 brochure you are referring to. -Mike
-
I don't see anything in the pictures that leads me to believe it wasn't originally red. Red cars were produced from the beginning. There was a red car shown in the first brochures and the service manual. I think it may have been HLS30-00003? There are many red cars before HLS30-00400 listed in Carl's public registry info on zhome.com. Many of the early cars were built in batches of two or three of the same color, but as deadflo noted, there was some mixing of the VINs too, so I don't think you can read too much into that. I would hardly call this car "mint condition" though, as the ad describes it. -Mike

As Conedodger noted, the problem is new skuff plates available from Nissan no longer have the same vinyl finish as the originals. Take another look at the product description on the Courtesy parts page you provided the link to. -Mike

I agree with Arne about the number of Z's at the Sunday show. I think there were only two stock S30s this year. I was supposed to be #3, but had issues with both my blue and red cars at the last minute, so we were Z-less for the first time in 5 yrs. Arne's Z would have been tough competition though, so I am glad I didn't have to find out who would have gotten the most votes . -Mike -
The 1970 would have been 905 red. They didn't change to 110 red until the 1972 model year. The 905 is more of a true red and the 110 is more of a orangish red. -Mike

I'd recommend just taking the off the distributor rotor and taking that with you instead. It's quick to take off and put on, is hidden under the distributor cap, and I doubt many thieves carry old Z rotors around with them. -Mike

I'm going, but heading down early Sunday morning. See you there. -Mike

I don't think you'd be stepping on any toes. No one has the market cornered on making reproduction parts, and as far as I am concerned, the more the better. My suggestion would be to just pick one part, start it, complete it, and then move on to another part if you still have a desire. Try to start too many projects at once, and you may wind up not getting any of them done. I have previously let people borrow parts to make molds from and not heard anything back in over a year, so things like that have made me skeptical. I may have a NOS set of taillight seals put away (I can't remember if I put the only set on my blue car or not), but reproduction seals are also available from aftermarket suppliers currently. Also, another member posted this link http://www.vintagerubber.com/240z.aspx to another source for reproduction rubber parts recently, in case you didn't see that. Good luck! -Mike

Take a look at this old thread http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31859. If you have a "432R" style spoiler with a flat spot on the right side (as sold by Les at CDM), the correct way would be to mount the emblems like FilipA did in post #8. If your spoiler doesn't have a flat spot you could still mount the emblems the same way, but they probably wouldn't sit as flush, and I would just leave them off in that case. -Mike

Its a bit of a thread hijack from the original topic of this thread, but take a look at this for information about fixing your roof http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?t=30409. -Mike

I should be there. I registered for the car show at the last minute. I was planning to bring my 1972, but I may try to bring my blue car instead. -Mike -

Here are some that I did last summer when I restored two gas tanks. I used POR15 and was able to reuse the original strap backing material after I cleaned and degreased it, then painted it with SEM trim black. I think I used "automotive goop" to adhere the material back to the straps. Note that there was a slight difference in the earliest straps and backing material from later ones. The set at the top is from a 11/69 production car and the set on the bottom is from a 5/72. -Mike

Yes, I also asked the seller a question about it through ebay during the auction. For some reason he didn't post that Q&A though. -Mike
