  3. Funny, I was just thinking about posting about this one too. I think I saw this car listed on CL for much less a month or two ago. The seller must have pulled the ad and relisted. The "does have cancer on the pillars and the rear hatch mating surface is rusted" sounds like it could be worrisome though. -Mike

I wish someone had copied the text from the ads he posted 3 yrs ago. They were pretty funny to read. At least he has toned them down a bit now, they used to be mostly about what a cheap bunch of b@st@rds Datsun owners are. I doubt he will ever sell these parts for any where close to what he is asking without providing more information and pictures about he actually has. -Mike

  6. There was only one speaker in the stock 240Z set up and no options on US cars, except for the automatic transmission. Here is a thread with some information about upgrading speakers, while keeping a relatively stock look http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31258. Classicdatsun.com also sells some aftermarket speakers with stock looking brackets (under 240Z Parts - Misc). -Mike

  9. Here is the bumper from my 1972. I would put the headlight buckets on first and then the bumper. Also, attach the brackets to the bumper loosely first and then install on the car. If I understand your question about which way the bolt heads face, you install them from the engine bay, so they face back towards the engine. Also, I would recommend having a helper, so you don't end up scratching the paint. Some people also cover the ends with tube socks to help prevent scratches during installation. -Mike

Not that surprising, since there were less than 2,000 sold to begin with (2 in 1970, 264 in 1971, 549 in 1972 and 1,114 in 1973 according to NMC data in "Nissan/Datsun A History of Nissan Motor Corporation in U.S.A"). Using an estimate of 5.8% still registered of those imported (similar to the US data in another thread http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showpost.php?p=311216&postcount=37) that equals about 112 still registered. Not far off from the 150 that Nigel indicated. -Mike

  13. Are you talking about factory undercoating or additional undercoating applied by dealers? I wouldn't doubt that many dealers in rust prone areas added additional undercoating, as much for additional profit as for any protection it provided, but I have never heard of the factory undercoating cars differently based on which coast they would be sold on. I doubt it was even known which coast the cars would be sold on when they were on the production line. Based on what Terry Vollnogle relayed from Carl Beck, the only difference was that very early cars (1969 and early 1970 production) only had undercoating (which was then covered with paint) in the wheel wells, while later cars also had undercoating (also covered with paint) on underside of the floors, etc. http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showpost.php?p=303027&postcount=19 This is consistent with what I have found on my three 1969 production cars and my 5/72 car. -Mike

  15. Also, no one else has mentioned it, but it does have a half dash cap and the 73 flat top carbs have been replaced with the much better earlier round tops. I agree that a one owner car is worth a premium as they tend to be less hacked up. -Mike

    Early 240z

    I think the two cars Tony D is referring to are HLS30-00305 and HLS30-00051. The owner listed them on ebay several times for $10k each a couple of years ago http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?t=26318. There are a couple of pictures of 305 in the thread and a couple of 51 in this one http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?t=25547.   18. Well, he is from Canada after all . Every time I drive to Vancouver in the summer and have a window down, I catch a whiff of pot from at least one car at a stop light at some point during the trip. -Mike
  19. There's something under the mud too. It looks like the rockers have just been painted black. It is hard to tell if there is a trim strip added above that or not. -Mike

  21. Thanks guys. I am trying to get it as close to original as I can. Rich, I know my engine bay work isn't on the same level as yours yet, but I will get there. I'm just not ready to pull the engine on it yet, so this is just a temporary measure. Ron, my daughter had a dance recital yesterday, so that was my excuse I used to convince my wife to let me open my camera present early. I can't believe that worked! Jim, I agree, I love the look of four spoke wheels on the 240Z, if you are going for a period look. The LeMans wheels are definitely my favorite, but I like the Libres alot too, and have them on #237 now. All of Five&Dime's pictures have inspired me to finally get a decent camera to see if I can learn to take better shots. You have a good eye for detail, yes that is a new radiator decal from Banzai Motorworks and those are the original metal emblems on the car. I repainted a couple of them before putting them back on after the exterior repaint. -Mike

  23. Hey guys sorry for the delay in getting back on this. Getting the overspray off was a difficult chore and took a lot of elbow grease. I took everything off the sides of the inner fenders and removed the radiator. I used several different methods depending on how thick the overspray was. I tried a couple of different rubbing and polishing compounds with scotch-brite scouring pads, Goof-off, and, as a last resort, 0000 steel wool in a few areas. I also used a small battery operated scrubber that I found at ACE hardward. Its about the size of an electric tooth brush with replaceable scrubbing pads and it was good for getting into tight places. The tops of the front shock towers have some spots of missing paint, but I think that was just covered by overspray before. I am going to get some touch up paint made to match, as a temporary measure, and will pull the engine and have the engine bay repainted at some point. As I noted in my first post, I put on new Z-therapy carbs and center linkage, but they looked so nice I needed to clean up the exhaust and intake manifolds. I used Calyx manifold coating (http://www.eastwood.com/calyx-manifold-coating.html) on the exhaust manifold and glass bead blasted the intake manifold, balance tube, and heatshield. As Zup guessed, I replaced the AB valve with a spare that was in really good shape and replaced some hoses. I had the radiator boiled out and it came back with shinny new paint . I replaced the blue plug wires and battery cable with a stock used parts and installed a new Nissan coil. I replaced the metal fan with a NOS one and the fan pulley and hood inspection lamp with replated spares. I bead blasted and painted the horns the correct OD color and installed a splash pan that I had powder coated. I also used paint stripper to remove overspray from many of the wires in the engine bay. I think that is about everything. I still need to have a lot of replating done and replace a couple more things. I got a new camera as an early Christmas present, so I pulled the car out of the garage and took a few more pictures today.
