Some Z papers, need expert.
Rick, I don't know if the can of touch-up paint I have came with the purchase of the car, but I do know it is an original Nissan touch-up paint can. It is listed in the USA Nissan Parts Catalog starting in the first 11/69 edition. So, it is not "aftermarket" paint. The touch-up paint containers changed over time. When I bought my 1972 it came with a spray can and small container of touch up paint. Both still labeled "Datsun", so this was before the name change to Nissan in the early 80's for the US. Note the Nissan part number, so these are not aftermarket either. -Mike

I can't see what you are referring to in your picture, but it sounds like it was something given by the dealer when the car was sold, maybe to use for registration or insurance purposes? I assume this car was sold new in the US? If so, licensing and registration documents are different for each state and change over time. Yes the mysterious red paper with "asian markings" is from Japan. It is the paper label from an original can of touch-up paint. I am attaching a picture of a can of paint that came with my white car. New Hood Latch or restored part?
Odds are if it looks new it has been replated or could just be a good condition original. Some people have used Caswell plating products to plate things like that at home http://www.caswellplating.com/. I'm just going to get all the parts together that need replating and have them professionally done. -Mike

This is an old thread, so it is probably a moot point anyway, but the OP wasn't looking for color chips. He was asking for people to submit interior and exterior photos of their cars to use as a reference for how the different colors look on actual cars. -Mike

How Close Are Our VIN #'s
There is also a thread about the online spreadsheet http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2751 and it is mentioned in several others, so it was just by chance that you saw this old VIN thread instead of one about the spreadsheet, because someone posted to it. I don't think anyone checks on this thread, they just look at it again when someone new finds it and brings it up again. Some people have links to the online spread sheet in their signatures, but there really is no good way to direct people new to the site to it. -Mike

I think that is Bryan's point. Since there is the online spreadsheet now, there is no need to keep updating this old thread where the numbers are not compiled and, unless you want to look through 18 pages of posts, the info is pretty meaningless. -Mike

Well, I wound up with another low VIN Z...
Thanks John. I went with a base/clear. It just seems to have a better shine than a single stage, in my opinion. The interior is perfect, so nothing to do there. The front frame rails were painted, since the front suspension was out. I plan to remove the rear suspension and paint the underside myself after I get it home. -Mike

Yeah, its too bad that I don't have any before pictures to share. There is a night and day difference. In fact, I will have to polish up all my other gauges before I reinstall my dash, just so they don't look bad in comparison. I have heard so many stories about these clocks not being repairable, especially the oscillators. Ron is a magician with these clocks. -Mike

Clock repair for Z's
I just got my two-knob rally clock back from Ron too. He seems to be the only one to be able to repair both the clocks and oscillators on these rare clocks. The bearings and motor gear were so worn that they had to be replaced and Ron made the needed parts, since they aren't available anywhere. There were also a couple of defective capacitors in the oscillator that he replaced. All of that with a turn around time of 11 days from the time he received it until I got it back. Ron also educated me on the oscillators. Apparently there are different versions and the one I have is the later revision, which is quartz crystal controlled, so it doesn't make a humming noise like the earlier ones. Ron rebuilt the movement of a calendar clock (some refer to as the single knob rally clock) a few months ago. After I got it back I modified the case and wiring to get it get it to work in a 240z. Ron is definitely the gold standard in Z clock repair and I highly recommend his work. -Mike
