  1. Bryan, I wish you the best of luck with your new family addition, and the sale of your car. It certainly is beautiful and I can imagine that it's difficult to part with. Without the original engine, I see no reason not to go wherever you want with the car regardless of it's age, especially considering the value original complete restos are going for at this point in time. Personally, I think your choice to preserve the over all shape and style of the car and not get silly with side skirts, rear valance or an oversized rear wing and other body altering mods was a wise choice. The front spoiler looks great. Family is definitely more important than things as you say, and there will always be other cars, but you only have one chance to raise your kid.

Not so obvious. I thought you were trying to say 6-8k. Why not just type exactly what you thought you meant to say instead of what you think we though you think to say? This way we all think what you meant to say we thought, you think?
  3. Lambo what? Seems like a lot of work for a car that nobody else would want. It might look half-way decent if the arse end was shorter by a foot or more.......then again, no it wouldn't.

  5. The red 240Z is a nice looking car, but that "rust proofing" looks more like rust cover up on the suspension. They just sprayed right over everything. Looks like bedliner or spray-on undercoating.

Hey I just posted some shots of of my underbody after stripping it. There are some good clear shots of the T/C box in there. Check it out. http://www.flickr.com/photos/techn0freq/sets/72157616150623547/
  7. Nice looking Z overall. My favorite part is the headlight covers......Man am I jonesing for a pair of those.

I find this to be true of any car you own. I think your mind is pre-disposed to notice the shapes that you are familiar with. When I first got my 4runner, I could't believe how many I saw on the road. I know there are lots of these out there, but I never really noticed how many until I had one. Same for the beamer, and now for the Z. I see a Z every couple of weeks or so here in the Bay Area.

  10. Yes, the blocks are basically the same where it counts. Note that the early heads/manifolds have a square exhaust ports. At some point in late 79 to early 80, they switched to the P79 head which has round exhaust ports so you'll need to use the exhaust manifold that came with the 83 motor, or swap heads if possible. Before doing so, check the calculator here to see what your compression ratio will be so you can determine if this is somtehing that you should/can/want to do. Simply bolting an N42 or N47 head on a flat top piston engine like that of the F54 block will result in roughly 10.x to 1 compression ratio which is a little too high for typical pump gas, although it would put out some kick arse power with the right fuel. http://www.atlanticz.ca/zclub/techtips/calcs/engine%20builder/index.html More on this: http://www2.zhome.com:81/rnt/L28conversion/engine.html
  11. First things first. Before you hook up the fiel pump to the tank, you need to clean out your tank or it will destroy the elec fuel pump. Clogged tanks are common for tihs and any oder car. Rust accumulates in the tank and clogs the pickup tube and anything else between there and the carb. If your tank is that badly clogged, you need to drain and clean it out an a minimum, and optimally, get it boiled out at a radiator shop. If the rust is really bad, it may need repairs. Anohter recommendation is to get it recoated or restored. http://www.gastankrenu.com/index.htm Regarding the wiring, cars that did not come with an elec pump are generally wired for them anyway. I'm guessing that you already found the wires by the sending unit. If I recall correctly, the other end can be found under the dash somewhere and just need to be hooked up to a power source. Look here for more info. I found this by searching for the words "electric fuel pump wiring". The search feature is your friend. http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27902

The owner said his rear diff ration was a 3.55/1. Could this account for the slow time? Or perhaps the nitro never came in...even though you can clearly see the guy opening up the bottle. Or perhaps he was nervous and closed it by accident... ROFLROFLROFLROFL The guesses ranged from 9.15 to 11.31 so the 12.35 surprised everyone. BTW, I believe the host started out doing voice overs for Monster Garage other shows like Extreme 4x4. I could be wrong on which shows he did but I know that voice and saw him in one of the shows at some point. This is obviously his first time in front of the camera.

Nice job. Thanks for sharing the pics of your car and your work. FYI, I have never heard that the position of the rear wheels was moved back, but rather that the diff was moved back 35mm to eliminate vibration caused by the half-shafts being angled forward. According to Nissan this was done beginning with series 3 (1972) cars in starting in 10/71 and forward through the replacement of the front diff isolator, rear diff member (moustace bar) and transverse link member. However by looking at the part numbers it appears that this change may have first been made as early as 7/71. You easily tell the difference by looking at the shape of the transverse link member to see if it's straight/flat as in the pre-series 3 cars, or curved rearward like the series 3-5 240Zs. Also note that the series 1-5 cars all used the same part number for the rear transverse links through 7/71 which would include all 70-73 cars. Based on this I see no way that the wheels could have been moved forward. If you are aware of some information to the contrary, please share what you know. Cheers!

Hahaha, I just saw a 73 240Z on Passtime. It had a Chevy 355, Turbo 400, mild cam, slicks and a 210 shot of nitrous. All that and it only pulled a 12.35 1/4 mile with a good hook.

I don't know if you've seen this post on dash repair already, but there are some good product recommendations judging by the the end results. http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23919

All absolutely true, and unless you are planning on making in excess of ~600hp or so, there really is no reason to go this route. That said, if this is what you want to do, this is what it will take. I plan on sticking with the L6 series engine so I went with the longnose 3.9 R200 and stock half-shafts for now, with a CV swap at some point in the future. The CVs are more of a want than a need for me.

Research young patowan...... Quote from MM: "You'll have to source your own R230 differential along with a total of 4 CV halfshafts, you end up mating the 4 inner flange style 6 bolt CV joints to our custom billet axles including our custom end stops. You can use a dizzy from a 280ZX. If you can find one, make sure it has the E12-80 module and be sure to grab the mounting bracket and pedestal. This is the setup many of us are running. Do a search for 280Zx dizzy swap for more info. If you have trouble finding on with the E12-80 module, I'm told you can do without it if you have an external elec ignition system like an MSD box. Basically the reluctor acts as a trigger for the MSD unit. I'm planning on trying this at some point myself.

That 280Z body looks like a good find, especially for $100! A much better starting point than a rat infested 280ZX.

I have a F54/P79 engine from 280ZX 2+2 with a mfg date of 10/80 sitting in the garage. I'm not sure if the car was registered as an 80' or an 81' since it was a JY special, but I'm gonna venture a guess that it was 81'.
  21. Congrats! Very nice looking car. Looks like a 240z steering wheel as well. Another thing you might want to fix is that muffler. Looks like they went with a center exit and angled it down to fit the opening.

Funny that your laptop and remote control is on the floor near the seat. I can guess what you were doing. It's truly a sickness. I bet your wife/gf was laughing her arse off.

Hey Steve, how tall are you? I am considering replacing the foam in my 73 and I'm worried about just this. Things are already kind of tight in there at 6'2", especially with a sunroof. If this doesn't work out, I might try shaving the foam a bit. I'd rather not cut up the car to lower the mounts if I can help it.
  24. I haven't interpreted any of what was said so far in this thread as "bashing', except perhaps for Tarmac's comments regarding Ron's.... So far I believe that most of the comments here have been mostly constructive in nature. After all, aren't we here to share information and opinions for the betterment of the community as a whole?

Maybe it's just the light, but the tail panel on the Z-432 looks a couple shades darker than the one on the 240Z. I wonder if this is "correct", a trick of light, or just what was available.
