New eBay procedure - name changes
Thanks for that link Ron. Very handy. I was just looking at our primary subject's feedback via Toolhaus. Very scary to think I ever considered buying anything from him. I always thought that it was not possible to change names on eBay and that you had to basically start over/fresh if you did so. Guess not.

Whine on CB radio
Does the pitch of the whine change with engine RPM or stay constant regardless of RPM?

The Long Road Home
Looks like a great trip Sean. I'm jealous and wish I had the time to do a trip like that, nice and slow and hit all the points of interest. Perhaps one day. BTW, I grew up in the Monterey area, Pacific Grove mostly, and now reside in Santa Cruz. Where did you complete your masters? MPC, CSUMB or somewhere else?

How to get Microfitch CD?
Yes, the CD is definitely worth the cost and supporting the site in some way is always a good idea. I use the CD and the site frequently.

What's wrong with the 280's?
This is all great info Carl. My comments were based on something I read a while back (don't remember where unfortunately) that the increase in stroke of the L6 brought the power back up to 139hp from 129hp I guess this was erroneous info?.....and the rest was speculation on my part just trying to put it all together in my head. Sorry guys if I added to the confusion. :disappoin

240Z Combo and T/S switch repair Service
Hey Dave, I haven't had a chance to install the PLH on my 73 yet, and the statement above has me a bit worried as mine was built in 4/73. Did you mean to say up to 7/73, because the harness was the same from 7/72 - 7/73?

What's wrong with the 280's?
It's really not accurate to lump all the 240Z together because there was a number of changes just ot the 240Z that affected overall engine output. Don't for get that the 1970 came with the E31 head and 9.13:1 compression through 8/71 and that is where the 151hp number comes from. The E88 head was introduced in 9/71 which lowered the compression to 8.76:1. At some point Datsun also added the smog pump and other emission related devices which of course affected overall engine output as a result. The power robbing additions continued in 1972 and 1973 with the final insult being that of the hideous flat top hitachi carbs on the 1973 240Z. So, saying that all 240Z's have 151hp simply isn't accurate, even if you swap out the flat tops on the 73, you still have the lower compression E88 head, and the small valve version at that.

Water thermostat housing and ivory wires
A good start would be telling us what year your car is, as well as whether it has the original engine or a later year model. I see in your profile that you have both a 76 and a 78. In this case, I'm not sure it makes a difference but making that clear in you posts or adding it to your signature will save some time and get you better answers in the future. Here's a link to some wiring diagrams

the perfect Zcar
That's a very subjective topic IMHO. I'm not sure there's even such a thing as a perfect Z. What's perfect for me may not be perfect for the next guy. Sorry, I didn't see the article you're referring to. My opinion of a perfect Z, assuming i"m not trying to stay all original. 1973 240Z, F54/P79 block/head, twin SU carbs, 79-81 280ZX Distributor w/E-12-80 ign. module, 280Zx 5spd trans, 3.9:1 R200 Diff, 280ZX master cylinder, 1984 300ZX vented rotors front, non-vented rear, 1989-91 Toyota 4runner front calipers (S12W), 1988-94 Nissan 240SX rear calipers, Konig Rewinds, ST anti-sway bars, Zenon style airdam, BRE rear spoiler, Momo Monte Carlo steering wheel, color matched bullet mirrors, Optima battery, and a few more upgrades. Again, this is my idea of a near perfect 240Z but the next guy will have a completely different take on this subject.

Hello from Germany / Brabus-City
Welcome to the forum. Keep searching, you'll find more info than you know what to do with. For an overview of the history of the 240Z, go here. Based on your location, it may be easier/cheaper to locate a good 260Z. Same body and engine design but 2.6L vs 2.4L as well as some other small improvements and add'l features. If you're all about driving and enjoying the car the experience is much the same for the 240 260, & 280Z. Each a little more refined and a little heavier as a result. The 240Z is the true no frills sports car. Good luck in your search.

Update.
That's a classic. Haven't seen that one in a while.

Halfshaft swapping
I suggest using a closed end wrench to avoid rounding off the nuts. There's not a lot of room in there to recover from this should it occur. I can tell you that many closed end wrenches will be too big around the nut opening to fit in that small space. If I recall correctly, I couldn't get my Craftsman combination wrench's closed end in there and had to use a Snap-On wrench I happened to have. Before trying again, give them several good soakings with a quality penetrant like Aero Kroil or somehting of that nature. If that doesn't work, some well placed heat might help break the nuts free.

HELP su conversion
I was referring to the linkage that connects the linkage you have(firewall to manifold), to the linkage between the carbs.

What's wrong with the 280's?
Holy crap man! Pardon the pun. Get your mind out of the toilet, whoops sorry again. Seriously though, by the time the 1973 240Z came around, the real HP in SAE was more like 129hp due to the change in heads, manifolds, and the flat tops. The bore and stroke done to the L6 in the 260 brought it bak up to 139hp and the L28 in the 280 up to 149. Of course the 280 was a lot heavier that the original 240.

Engine Swap?
It's all been done. You will find more info on that sort of stuff over at www.hybridz.org. Most of us here are into keeping things a bit more on the "classic" side.

Results at Canby? Pictures...
That's the one. Kind of hard to tell without being able to see inside since most of the outer indicators are gone. Now that I look a bit closer, I can just make out the rear 260Z badge and the data plate location. I'm calling this a wolf in sheep's clothing and a 240 wanna be but I still love it.

Hard decision...
Don't forget to factor the price of fuel into the mix, especially if it will be used for commuting. In my opinion, a V8 is not the best choice for a starving student unless it's the kind you can drink.

Ravin has a newby question.
I though I read somewhere that the towing speed for autos was even less than 20 mph and only for a few as in 2-3 miles but I can;t find that info now. Whatever you do, don't forget to take it out of park......:stupid:

TONS of new pictures!!!
Yeah! Pictures! You have some nice shots in there. Personally I like this one the best since it shows your love for the Z. Man that front bumper really needs some love too. Maybe it's just twisted or loose on the mounts. Get'er done!
