The purpose of securing them is not so much that they don't move around under normal circumstances, but rather that they don't become projectiles during a collision that can cause significant injury or death. I suggest that you develop some sort of way to batten these down so you don't become just another statistic in the event of an accident.
  2. Ron what r u smoking? How in the world could a broken/bad mount cause a sudden rise in RPMs? unless the whole motor or tranny spun around several times at high velocity. I think you'd notice this.

Very nice. I love the green metallic w/gold SMs. I'm going for a similar look with brown metallic and solid gold Rewinds if I can ever find the time to get the suspension and running gear all back together......

My first drive in a Z was the day I test drove the 240Z that I ended up buying. It started right up and idled great, but ran like crap under load. After a short test drive I felt like this was probably due to bad gas, burnt points, bad condenser, fouled plugs, old ignition wires, a bad tune, or all of the above. Since the rest of the car was clean with low mileage and there didn't appear to be any major oil or coolant leaks, I took a chance based on the character of the guy and bought the car. Turns out all of the above stuff was original and just needed to be replaced.
  5. I'm guessing this is electrical. Poor connection, high resistance, preventing any strong flow of current while under load. Check all your coil connections, as well as the connections to your battery, alternator and starter and fuses and fusible links. Clean em up and tighten them all. As to why your engine revved to 5000 rpm while you were driving, either you pushed in the clutch, the clutch slipped, or your tire(s) spun. I think this is something we'll never know.
  6. Nice overspray.

Looks like Sport Max rims to me.
  8. If I could have any Z but only one, it would be final rendition of the PrimadonnaZ.

That's a wierd one. If it doesn't hange with engine speed, and doesn't stop when you hit the brakes, I'd be looking at wheel bearings or U-joints.
  10. Exactly. I didn't buy my 73 because I couldn't find 70-72, I was actually looking for it and sought out the cleanest and least molested one I could find within my budget. Everyone has their own idea of what makes the perfect car.
  11. Thanks for that link Ron. Very handy. I was just looking at our primary subject's feedback via Toolhaus. Very scary to think I ever considered buying anything from him. I always thought that it was not possible to change names on eBay and that you had to basically start over/fresh if you did so. Guess not.

Does the pitch of the whine change with engine RPM or stay constant regardless of RPM?

Looks like a great trip Sean. I'm jealous and wish I had the time to do a trip like that, nice and slow and hit all the points of interest. Perhaps one day. BTW, I grew up in the Monterey area, Pacific Grove mostly, and now reside in Santa Cruz. Where did you complete your masters? MPC, CSUMB or somewhere else?
  14. Yes, the CD is definitely worth the cost and supporting the site in some way is always a good idea. I use the CD and the site frequently.
  15. I noticed this as well and was planning on looking into it. Thanks for bringing this topic to light. Hopefuly we can all learn something more about this process.
  16. Very cool. Thanks for that.

He'll be smoking this one alone.
  18. Thanks for validating my vehicular prejudices.
  19. This is all great info Carl. My comments were based on something I read a while back (don't remember where unfortunately) that the increase in stroke of the L6 brought the power back up to 139hp from 129hp I guess this was erroneous info?.....and the rest was speculation on my part just trying to put it all together in my head. Sorry guys if I added to the confusion. :disappoin
  20. Note the part numbers and dates of availlbilty in the attached image.
  21. Hey Dave, I haven't had a chance to install the PLH on my 73 yet, and the statement above has me a bit worried as mine was built in 4/73. Did you mean to say up to 7/73, because the harness was the same from 7/72 - 7/73?
  22. It's really not accurate to lump all the 240Z together because there was a number of changes just ot the 240Z that affected overall engine output. Don't for get that the 1970 came with the E31 head and 9.13:1 compression through 8/71 and that is where the 151hp number comes from. The E88 head was introduced in 9/71 which lowered the compression to 8.76:1. At some point Datsun also added the smog pump and other emission related devices which of course affected overall engine output as a result. The power robbing additions continued in 1972 and 1973 with the final insult being that of the hideous flat top hitachi carbs on the 1973 240Z. So, saying that all 240Z's have 151hp simply isn't accurate, even if you swap out the flat tops on the 73, you still have the lower compression E88 head, and the small valve version at that.
  23. A good start would be telling us what year your car is, as well as whether it has the original engine or a later year model. I see in your profile that you have both a 76 and a 78. In this case, I'm not sure it makes a difference but making that clear in you posts or adding it to your signature will save some time and get you better answers in the future. Here's a link to some wiring diagrams

That's a very subjective topic IMHO. I'm not sure there's even such a thing as a perfect Z. What's perfect for me may not be perfect for the next guy. Sorry, I didn't see the article you're referring to. My opinion of a perfect Z, assuming i"m not trying to stay all original. 1973 240Z, F54/P79 block/head, twin SU carbs, 79-81 280ZX Distributor w/E-12-80 ign. module, 280Zx 5spd trans, 3.9:1 R200 Diff, 280ZX master cylinder, 1984 300ZX vented rotors front, non-vented rear, 1989-91 Toyota 4runner front calipers (S12W), 1988-94 Nissan 240SX rear calipers, Konig Rewinds, ST anti-sway bars, Zenon style airdam, BRE rear spoiler, Momo Monte Carlo steering wheel, color matched bullet mirrors, Optima battery, and a few more upgrades. Again, this is my idea of a near perfect 240Z but the next guy will have a completely different take on this subject.
