Looking for a high quality valve cover gasket...
Permatex Form-A-Gasket or the like is the only way to go for this particular app. I've sworn by that stuff for years and never had it leak on me when applied properly.

I'd love to get together sometime to discuss Zs. I'm currently in the process of getting mine back on the road but should be done before the end of this month of things go my way. I'm in the finishng stages of a complete suspension rebuild, wheel & tire replacement, brake upgrade, and general clean-up. I'm hoping to be ready for the Blackhawk event and the MSA show in LA. BTW, Is that a signature from Mr. Katayama on the air cleaner that I see there?

Hello all you Z people
Hey all Zs are welcome of course. We each have our preference but in the end, they're all related and worth saving. Personally, I'm glad people are extending the lives of the 280ZXs. It just means there will be more in the junkyard in 10 years when I need to upgrade or replace parts again on my 240Z. Thanks for the engine, ditsributor, trans, brakes, diff, and master cylinder...

hey I just noticed that you're in Santa Cruz as well. Perhaps we'll run into each other around town. Hopefully not in the literal sense.

Nothing to be ashamed of there. Just be glad you're dad is so damn cool and do something special for him in return when he least expects it. And whatever you do, don't disrespect him and the car by treating it like shiat, but I get the feeling that that's not going to be an issue with you based on your history. I'd love to hear about your first drive in the car and how you must have felt to finally be behind the wheel of "the car of your dreams". I think there are a lot of people here who can relate to that feeling, including myself. Congrats.

Good 240Z engine rebuild shop in Bay Area?
You could always build it out into a stroker, but I don't think you can get all the way to 3.1L with an L24 block, at least not safely. If I recall correctly you can get to about 2.7L safely, but you'll need to start with an L28 if you want to go to 3.1L.

What famous street?
Yep, been down it many times, however it's very narrow, and very steep. Even without the people, it would be hard to go more than 5mph, but it's worth doing if you're there. I grew up half a block outside Pebble Beach on 17 Mile Drive. Nice place but just one among many. My favorite was always the drive to to Big Sur. Now that I'm up north a bit in Santa Cruz, my favorites are Hwy 9 and Hwy 1(PCH) up to Half Mon Bay and San Francisco. But again, a few among many great drives in California.

Are there any Fees for a NON OP 1st gen Z car?
I believe the non-op fee is $25 dollars for a vehicle that's already registered in your name, but I could be wrong. The DMV has a pretty good website. I''m sure the fees are probably listed on there somewhere. Check here: http://dmv.ca.gov/vr/fees.htm

It's on the site Darrel mentioned above. Here's a link to the actual page since you were too lazy to actually look for it yourself. :lick: You'll need to scroll down a bit to get to it. http://www.geocities.com/inlinestroker/ratio.html

where to begin
Well we can't speak too much to the rust issues without some good pics, but I recommend a full analysis of the condition before making any decision as to whether to move forward with the existing shell or not. At a minimum, you will need to take out all the floor carpeting, padding, and tar pads to get a good look at the floors. However, there are several other areas that might disqualify it before you go to all that trouble. Namely the front frame rails, specifically where they join the passenger compartment near the T/C rods, especially on the battery side. If this area is heavily rusted and coming apart already, you may be better off finding a new shell unless you have lots of $$$$ or a friend with some excellent fabrication skills and the desire to work for beer. Anyway, this is all based on info gained from reading the rust threads on the forum here. This topis has been hash over time and time again. Check out the search feature, you'll find lots of info on this topic.

Off goes my baby...
You're a better man than I. There's no way I could stand the anticipation you must feel right now. I'd be known as the "Asshole with the Z" among the friends of the body man.
