Welcome to the club. I look forward to seeing some pics.

Sounds like fun. Nice pics of the crew. Wish I could have joined you. Man Arne, that was a really nice find. Congrats.
  3. I had a problem getting the aluminum gasket on the banjo fitting to seal. I tried new ones and copper ones to no avail. I finally got the leak stopped by going with plastic washers. The leak was barely detectable but you could smell it.
  4. The wheels look nice. Are you sure those rear tires aren't too big? Any interference there? Is it just me, or does this photo look like a gold fish with its mouth open?

Welcome to the forum Steve. I look forward to hearing more about your car. Lots of great info here as I'm sure you've already figured out.
  6. Just save them to your local hard drive and flip them using the built in filmstrip image viewer in explorer.exe, or download Irfanview or some other program with that capability.
  7. I hate em' too but for a different reason.........
  8. You know what they say about first impressions......and you've made a fine one.
  9. Here's a good place to start over there: http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=114798 A special thanks to jmortenson for this one.

I believe that the small hose fitting on the pipe you're talking about is for a hose that comes from the Flow Guide Valve which Bruce has provided a picture for above. The Flow Guide Valve "guides" fresh air from the air cleaner into the fuel tank, "guides" tank vapors into the crankcase which serves as an expansion storage tank, and prevents backflow from the crankcase into the fuel tank.

    Oh...ok...that explains it all.....

When pulling a motor from an 80ZX in the JY I jacked a few seatbelts from nearby junkers and tied them to the front hoist point and around the rear of the intake manifold where the EGR pipe is mouted. Worked like a charm the first time pulling the engine, and the second time mounting it on the engine stand.

What is the basis for your assessment of the tires? Is it just speculation or is this based on some evidence apparent in the photos?

Wow! Looking good man. I wish I had that kind of time and motivation......The results are amazing. Did you plate the fasteners yourself or get them professionally done? Also, is that a simple bead blast/clear coat finish on the valve cover or paint?
  15. Very cute. 56.6 was my first successful try. All the other times I hit cars trying to complete the level.

The interface of the shift lever with the transmission is very different between the early type "A" transmissions and the later type "B". See the following artivle for more info: http://zhome.com/ZCMnL/tech/AandBtranny.htm I have seen both types of bushings for sale on ebay recently. You might try Courtesy Nissan to see if they have the right ones. www.courtesyparts.com
  17. Good luck with finding one of those.......... You're better off just grabbing a 5 spd from an 81-83 280ZX. Grab a 3.90 diff to go with it. The ID plate in the engine compartment is a great way to id the proper diff assuming it hasn't been changed. These are designated as RC39 on the tag. RC37 for the 3.70, etc.

My guess is that unless all you do is spend enough money to get it running and then sell it immediately, you mught get your money back, but that largely depends on the condition of the car, and how mych you spend. In most cases, if you go hig wild and put lots of money into it, you will never get your money back out of it, but you will get tons of satisfaction out of it and sometimes that's worth more then money. I have a 73' and I can say first hand that it is very nice not to have to worry about smog inspections or expensive repairs to get it smog-able. Hopefully it wil stay that way for a long time to come. On related but somewhat, bizarre note, does anyone else know and appreciate the words to the song Red Barchetta by RUSH?

Yes, he's been working on this a long time. Looks like he has added some content since the last time I looked through this. Nice to see he hasn't given up. This car has a real nice shape. I wish I had the resources to pull something like this off myself.
  20. Nice job on the car and congrats on the win. I'd love to see some more pics and details of the work you did on the car.

Whatever you do, don't mix and match the 280ZX and 240Z clutch parts. The fork, throwout colar and pressure plate should all come fron the same model. Which one doesn't matter as long as they're all from the same model. Ther are many threads on this. While you're in there, I'd definitely replace the clutch disc and resurface the flywheel, unless of course you like taking things apart for fun.

Interesting. After looking into this a bit more, it appears that you are probably right Stephen. Now the question becomes whether I got the 5th gear with a final ratio of 0.773 or the .745, and whether or not the 5th gear is on a seperate fork than reverse, which was a problem in the earlier 5 speeds. According to this site, I should have the .745 5th gear, but my guess is that I don't, and that I have the .773 instead. I think I kinda like that ratio better anyway. That makes it a 23% change in upshift to 5th rather than the 26% with the .745 or the 14% change I have now with the old 1st gen 5spd. The car I got this running gear set from (F54/P97, FS5W71B, RC39) was a 280ZX 2+2 mfg in 10/80. Sorry for the hijack.

Funny, I was just looking at the tranny I pulled out of a completely stock 1981 280Zx 2+2 mfg in 10/1980, and it looks a bit different than yours. The differences I see immediately are that A) my filler plug is on the opposite side of the tranny, and happens to be in the blank spot next to the second wiring connector you are asking about, mine doesn't have the wiring connecter point you're asking about, but only a blank in that spot, and C) the ears on my shift lever mounting point are longer than yours. There may be other differences but those are the ones that jumped out at me. Due to the location of the second wiring connector you're referring to, and the proximity of the filler plug on mine, I'm guessing that it's a fluid level sensor. Perhaps someone could chime in if this is something that was added in 82' or 83'. See the poor quality pictures attached for comparison.
  25. Very nice Steve. I hope to find the same thing in mine when I get in there. My car spent it's entire life very near yours in San Francisco, and then in Santa Rosa, and it's now here with me in Santa Cruz. The first owner said it was always garaged and it doesn't appear that the salt air from the SF Bay got to it very often. Unfortunately for the car, I now live 2 blocks from the ocean, and don't have a garage at the moment. Hopefully the $250 car cover and the carport will afford some level of protection from the elements. I also plan on staying away from the beach during high surf days to avoid the salt spray in the air. You can see what kind of damage the salt air can do just by looking at some the older cars that the surfers have around here. Talk about serious body cancer..
