Are all F54 blocks and P79 heads the same?
I have an opportunity to purchase a complete L28 F54/P79 motor from an '82 280ZX for $250 + the cost of a rental trailer to get it home and my time. The odometer on the car it's in reads 260K+ mi. I pulled the plugs and turned it over via the crank pulley bolt and it's definitely not seized, but lying under it I can hear what I believe to me compressed air leaking past the rings into the crankcase with the plugs put back in. Based on the miles this is no surprise to me. The upside is that the motor is still in the car and hasn't been directly exposed to the elements like another I am looking at from I believe a Maxima, which brings me to my questions. Base on the mileage, is this still a good deal, and should I grab the 5 speed tranny as well? Or...should i go with the element exposed engine of undetermined mileage which I can probably get for $100 less? And finally, was the F54/P79 found in Maximas, and if so, are they basically the same from the standpoint of stroke, cam timing and valve size?

Grant Mahogany Steering Wheel
Looks great! Thanks for the pics. I've been considering that one as well. It should go well with the butterscotch interior I have.

Original Keys
Mine are the one on the left. I have one for the ignition, doors and hatch, and a second for the glovebox. The P.O. or locksmith ground the sides of the ignition key flat for easy recognition by feel making it look almost like the middle one.

'73 240Z $500 - advice !!!
Any of the L6 series motors will fit. No mount changes necessary. You can get core for between 150-300 im most places. Maybe even one that would bre ready to go with some TLC. ur-gelis has a freshly rebuilt L24 on eBay righ now with a starting bid of 1500. Not sure what the reserve is.

recognize this wing???
The wing looks like a mini Whale Tail. Not sure if that what it really is though. And that's a real sweet looking spoiler you've got there. Is that one that you made? If I ever paint my rig I may have to get one.

How do I remove pistons from the caliper?
This bolt thing simply won't work on the early 240Z calipers. Take my word for it. The pressure fitting bore does not go all the way through to the rear of the piston. At the bottom of the thread bore the circumference narrows to 1/16 of an inch or so. Only enough for fluid to pass, not a bolt. At any rate, there's not enough fluid capacity in there to push out either piston. Compressed air IS the way to go in this case. Period.

Back to KYB vs. Tokico....
Update.....Whoops! guess this doesn't apply to a 280Z....nevermind. For 240Z only If I read your post right, you're looking maintain the stock ride and NOT concerned with improving handling or anything like that. Basically your springs are shot and you are looking to restore the original feel. If that's the case, I suggest buying a set of OEM spec springs from Courtesy Nissan. http://www.courtesyparts.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=CP&Product_Code=55000-E4104US

My misfortune...
Bummer man. I hate to see that sort of thing with all the time we spend on our cars. Good luck with that.

Warning! - WIAT can strike you
I am infected bad! I knew I needed to replace the bushings and shocks so I thought IMAW go ahead and replace the springs WIAT. Since I had to take off the transverse links to replace the bushings, I thought IMAW paint them too. And since all that would look too pretty when done IMAW go ahead and paint the rear link crossmember and supports. Once those came off I figured IMAW drop the diff, moustache bar and front diff mount and paint those. Since I have to paint the half-shafts IMAW replace the u-joints WIAT. Since I went that far IMAW go ahead and pack the wheel bearings. Because I have all the struts off, IMAW rebuild and paint the calipers. Because I decided to do that, I better rebuild rear wheel cylinders. And since I seem to be on the road of rebuilding the brake system, IMAW replace the rubber brake hoses with braided lines. Since I'm going this far IMAW rebuild the MC and refresh all the brake hard lines. And since I am refreshing all the brake hard lines IMAW do the fuel lines too. Due ot the fact that I'm refreshing the brake and fuel hard lines, IMAW refresh the clutch hard lines too. And finally, since I am refreshing all the other hydraulic systems, IMAW replace the clutch hose and rebuild the slave cylinder. During all that I managed to swap out the old dizzy for '81 dizzy and WIAT I cleaned up the engine compartment by removing all the smog related components I could. Did I mention that WIAT I spent a $hi7load of $$$?

Ebay Car-What year is it really?
I'm sorry but that motor doesn't look freshly rebuilt to me. My guess will be that the seller is the one who will have to worry about "legal action".

How do I remove pistons from the caliper?
Not sure how that's gonna work as the tap width is much wider that the small hole that resides at the bottom of the inlet port.

Hello
Looks good from the outside at first glance but you really need to go look at it and inspect it for rust in specific areas. Do some searching on the forums here and you will find plenty on where to look. These cars are notorious for dim headlights and tail lights. Usually it's just a matter of cleaning up the connectors and eliminating resistance in the circuits. Headlight output can be improved by incorporating a relay into the mix. Also you may want to update your profile with your location. There may be someone who knows what to look for on the car that can go with you or even go on your behalf.

How do I remove pistons from the caliper?
I was surprised at the loud popping noise they made when breaking free of the bore. I need some new shorts anyway.

PRIMADONNA'S OLD....And NEW????
I love the older red one. Lot's of original ideas there, but the new one just isn't all that impressive. In fact, I like the stock shape better.

TIFF files are likely just WAY TO BIG and are exceeding the maximum file size on the board. Grab a program called Irfanview and resize it then try again.

Here is the "Headlight Relay Upgrade Harness Diagrams"
Ok, I went ahead and completed the HTML conversion and it looks great. Here's a preview until we can figure out how to get it in as an article with the images inline. http://www.jaderunner.com/Auto/240Z/Docs/daves_harness.htm

Here is the "Headlight Relay Upgrade Harness Diagrams"
I will be out most of this week on business travel but will be happy to convert it to HTML upon my return, as well as host the associated images if need be. However, I think it makes more sense to host it all on this site in one place. I hosted it on my site to avoid the multiple posts for each update. I already tried a saving it to HTML from Word and it looked like crap so I'm going to have to do some hand editing. When done I can send it in a zip file if you have some way of hosting the images and displaying them inline.

That is truly awsome. I think i need to follow this more closely. I had no idea the Zs were still so competitive. What class is this?
