Expert Test - What's this?
I have a 1 owner '73 that's pretty much all original and I don't have one of those.

Wild '71 240z on EBay!
Why in the world would you mount the oil filters in the wheel well. Not only does it look like crap but an errant rock, screw or nail could easily do you in.

Wheel comparison
I'm just looking ahead trying to decide which direction I want to go with regard to wheel choice. Which do you prefer? Personally I sorta like the retro 280ZXT look but man those Panasports are sweet! Stock - this is what I have now. Panasport Formula Gold 280ZXT

This engine,That engine...
As stated in numerous threads in the past, the primary reason to go to these other motors(L26, L28) is to get more power. Period. Aside from that, I can think of no good reason to change out the L24. One of the main reasons these later engines were perceived as having less power was due to the later cars being heavier and therefore slower. Not so. Check the numbers. The motors continued to get bigger(more displacement and more HP) to make up for the a loss of performance for two reasons: (1) design changes were made to the combustion chambers to lower compression ratios and help meet increasingly strict emission requirements, (2) to compensate for the increasing weight of the cars.

The find dreams are made of
The kind of man who leaves that kind of stuff behind is a dead man. Quite the find. Good luck in your search. Man, I'd love to have that Vette. That was always my favorite bosy style.

Are all F54 blocks and P79 heads the same?
Hmm....I found an F54/P79 combo in a junkyard, and the guy swears it's from a Maxima. He also swore up and down that the only Z motor he ever had was from an early 240Z. However, I managed to find 10 L6 engines. A few were definitely from Maximas but I also found one early L24 with SUs, 2 L26s w/Flat Tops, as well as a couple L28s w/F54 blocks and various heads.

Are all F54 blocks and P79 heads the same?
Unfortunately, the car is in a junk yard and the starter is missing. That's why I was cranking it by hand. Since I was planning on rebuilding it I guess the high miles don't matter much. The block and head both look solid and it's not frozen. Any idea what a typical rebuild with a mild cam and a rebuilt head would cost if I did the assembly after honing, tanking and anything else that should be done? $1000, $2000..more..less? So that hissing sound is normal eh Montoya? Wierd. I would think on a fresh rebuild you shouldn't be leaking any pressure from the cylinders in any direction unless something was wrong. Could it simply be the pressure changin in the crankcase due to th movement of the pistons, and the hissing sound is actually coming from the crankcase breather?

Dissapointed In My New Exhaust, Twice!!
I hate to generalize but I have also found many muffler guys to be devoid of any people or business skills whatsoever. Perhaps it's due to the simplistic nature of the task. They get bored and can't bear to hear anyone try to tell them how they want the job done. I know I'd be a grumpy old fart if I had to do their job.

280zx Turbo- What parts are worth getting?

Are all F54 blocks and P79 heads the same?
I have an opportunity to purchase a complete L28 F54/P79 motor from an '82 280ZX for $250 + the cost of a rental trailer to get it home and my time. The odometer on the car it's in reads 260K+ mi. I pulled the plugs and turned it over via the crank pulley bolt and it's definitely not seized, but lying under it I can hear what I believe to me compressed air leaking past the rings into the crankcase with the plugs put back in. Based on the miles this is no surprise to me. The upside is that the motor is still in the car and hasn't been directly exposed to the elements like another I am looking at from I believe a Maxima, which brings me to my questions. Base on the mileage, is this still a good deal, and should I grab the 5 speed tranny as well? Or...should i go with the element exposed engine of undetermined mileage which I can probably get for $100 less? And finally, was the F54/P79 found in Maximas, and if so, are they basically the same from the standpoint of stroke, cam timing and valve size?

Grant Mahogany Steering Wheel
Looks great! Thanks for the pics. I've been considering that one as well. It should go well with the butterscotch interior I have.

Original Keys
Mine are the one on the left. I have one for the ignition, doors and hatch, and a second for the glovebox. The P.O. or locksmith ground the sides of the ignition key flat for easy recognition by feel making it look almost like the middle one.

'73 240Z $500 - advice !!!
Any of the L6 series motors will fit. No mount changes necessary. You can get core for between 150-300 im most places. Maybe even one that would bre ready to go with some TLC. ur-gelis has a freshly rebuilt L24 on eBay righ now with a starting bid of 1500. Not sure what the reserve is.

recognize this wing???
The wing looks like a mini Whale Tail. Not sure if that what it really is though. And that's a real sweet looking spoiler you've got there. Is that one that you made? If I ever paint my rig I may have to get one.

How do I remove pistons from the caliper?
This bolt thing simply won't work on the early 240Z calipers. Take my word for it. The pressure fitting bore does not go all the way through to the rear of the piston. At the bottom of the thread bore the circumference narrows to 1/16 of an inch or so. Only enough for fluid to pass, not a bolt. At any rate, there's not enough fluid capacity in there to push out either piston. Compressed air IS the way to go in this case. Period.

Back to KYB vs. Tokico....
Update.....Whoops! guess this doesn't apply to a 280Z....nevermind. For 240Z only If I read your post right, you're looking maintain the stock ride and NOT concerned with improving handling or anything like that. Basically your springs are shot and you are looking to restore the original feel. If that's the case, I suggest buying a set of OEM spec springs from Courtesy Nissan. http://www.courtesyparts.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=CP&Product_Code=55000-E4104US
