A stupid question for many. :nervous: Why is the L series engine on a slant? Looks like about 5-8 degrees. Is it due to the design of the car so that the bonnet level could be lower? Is it due to the engine design? i.e. more torque if on a slant? Sorry if this is a silly question guys....just curious. James

Did someone say a car alarm siren already?

Nice one. Be sure you look hard at the rust hot spots. That battery tray looks a little suspect, check underneath it and also the frame rails, doglegs, floor pans and sills for tell tail signs. Try to keep it on the road while you are bringing it back to life, it will keep the grin on your face. Good luck

Oh hell guys. I'm at the "Oh Shite, now I have to buy all this stuff to start my resto". The car is nearly a shell and I have a huge list of parts I need. Parts cost are a killer but the freight from the US to NZ is wicked. There might be something for flying to San Diego, obtaining as many crapped out cars and shoving them all in a container to be shipped back to NZ, at least I could sell the bits I don't need. The household CFO set the budget and I have blown it out of the water already.......lotto here I come!!

Depends on what you want to do with the car really? If you want to restore a Zed then you are best to start with the most rust free example you can find. Rust is very common in these cars and it is amazing where it can be hiding. Key to any purchase in my mind is to get the car up in the air so you can get a good look at the belly. Check out the frame rails, floor pans (lift the carpet as well as the underside), doglegs, sills, and under the battery tray. If you ARE thinking maybe one day I'll restore this thing, then you might want to make sure that all the trim details are there. Many parts for these cars are getting hard to find so try to find the most complete example you can. The original engine will be a plus if the seller still has it. 5 speed tranny is good. L28 is good also, plenty of parts around for them. Shame about the carbs though, you could get a set of round top SU's for them but beware of those nasty flattop models. The best advice I can give is to take your time. Shop around for the best rust free example that fits your budget. The more Zeds you view the more savvy you will become. Good luck in your search.....(i took me 2 years to find one that I wanted).....it has rust where you can only imagine.

If it were on the left, then wouldn't it be hidden by the coffee holder/oreo dispenser/BigMac/tissue box/dvd remote and Magnum! :classic: Doesn't the designer point of view make perfect sense though.....if you have to cut things out to get the end-user price down, then keeping most things the same would benefit. As the "home market" is RHD then it hardly going to be on the left is it.

My Zedression (see AlphaDog...it is possible) is small. Many people have purchased Zed's then proptly pulled them apart for a resto project. I made that I drove mine for 1 year before starting my resto. That means that I have the bug/fever/need to have it back as fast I can, this in turns resuts in minimal Zedression. Mike....why the long wait????

My wife calls it "That rusty old heap of shite that pisses on the garage floor" and "the money pit" and "THAT BLOODY CAR!!" sometimes replacing the first word with a well known f word and "the old banger" (well, she is English!). Me....I call it "The Zed" and sometimes "The Ratsun"

Oh hell, I have put you into one haven't I. You have a 280Z! Nothing wrong with it. It just weighs a little more that's all. Ok, it might also have larger bumpers but it is still the classic shape. Here in New Zealand we didn't get 280's, so us guys here have into import 280z bits to be able to fit the gruntier R200 Diff. Hell...come to think of it, San Diego is one of the very very few places where rust free Zeds' exist.....lucky swines. But the 240 is a wee bit quicker to 60...sorry. Have you looked up this site yet for lots of things to do to you 280? http://www.geocities.com/zgarage2001/ Enjoy

Series 1 240Z's that 26th-Z and I have are much lighter than the tankish 280. The S1 had the best 0-60 time for 12 years until they added a turbo to the already fuel injected 280ZX. 240Z's rock!

26th-Z is right on the money. My drivers side wouldn't lock. So over Xmas (I was at work), I pulled the entire door to bits, window out, guides out, entire lock mechanism. Turned out that the poor old lock mechanism was crying out for a good clean. So I put the whole assembly into a parts washer (kerosene & detergents), left it on for about 4 hours. Blew it all dry with compressed air and then re-greased it. I used water-proof grease in mine. Now the lock works like new. Give it a go, it doesn't take too long to complete.

No longer a mate :pirate: Got ripped off converting it for $10K Snorted another $10k up his nose after realising what a dork he'd been. :stupid: :ogre: Isn't it just amazing just what some people do with cash.....long live the veggieman.....man

Oh Man...mine is turning into a marathon. Just keep finding stuff to do...gezzzz All I have is memories of similar blasts (without the 235's). One day in the distant future I'll be happy to share my smile too. Good on ya Scott, thanks for the encouragement....oh how we need it somtimes.
  15. I'm with MikeW. Great idea. If you were to tick a box before upload that states "I don't mind if people download this image" then the issue would go away...and fast.
  16. Eric, Just been flicking through these posts for info on 40phh models and came across your unanswered post. From "How to modify your Nissan/Datsun OHC engine" by Frank Honsowetz on page 111. "For an initial main-jet size, start with 0.04 the size of the main venturi. Eg, if a 40mm main venturi is used, install a 1.60mm main jet, or 40x4 divided by 100 = 1.60mm For an air-correction-jet size, add 0.20 to the initial main-jet size. Eg, install a 1.80mm air jet, or 1.60mm + 0.20mm = 1.80mm" Not too sure if that helps you any? Anyway you have probably sorted it already!

What a crying shame but you are right Alfadog! I have no problem admitting that I have downloaded images from peoples galleries to my hard drive. Is that morally wrong? Have I offended anyone? I am just gathering images of Zeds that I really like. I also use these images offline when I'm stuck on some detail of my car. I'm not selling them nor am I posting them anywhere....just sorry that I'm so normal. What if the site goes tomorrow.....I'm left with zip......does that help anyone? So I guess the only way (I'm not a tecko savvy kinda guy) that I will be able to obtain images on my hard drive is to PM the owner of pic from his gallery. I'll just have to do that in future....I'm sure no one will mind. What a crying shame!

Steven, Again, great pics of your car. Funny that while I was providing an answer to a comment of one pic, that I thought "has Steven been asked if it is OK to use his gallery images?" The work you have done is first class and I'm sure that you don't mind the congrats. Regardless of whatever law exists, I like to think that as a member of this club, I would expect to be asked permission first prior to any pics from my gallery (nothing worth taking anyway) being copied to another. It's just in keeping with the atmosphere of this club. Well....I hope I didn't upset anyone....you know...its easily done these days...gezzzzzz
  19. Just pull it, get it bead blasted and then coat it with a clear coat. It will look great. A new one will cost more

  21. When pulling my dash out, I found out that the PO had made a half arsed attempt to fix a broken HCP. It is beyond repair. So guys, I need a new one. Looking for NOS if possible. I don't really care if it has to come from the moon....however, it need not have moon prices. :tapemouth The car is a RHD 12/70 build 240z. Not too sure if the heater controls are different from RHD to LHD....any help appreciated. Links to websites selling HCP's would be great. Cheers all, James
  22. I'm 1/4 way stripping my 71 240z. Please realise that what you are proposing to do is a HUGE undertaking. It takes an enormous amount of time (way more than you think). As above, take loads of digital pictures and make notes as you go. And ALWAYS put bolts and screws in plastic bags and label them BEFORE you wash up. You'll rarely remember the next day what that screw was off that you found on the floor. Been there. Good idea to start by pricing up what parts you will need now. Things like all the new rubber that you'll require, new hoses, maybe new panels & also some new suspension bushings or other. I don't want to be a dream killer but it is going to cost $$$, can't help that. These cars are old and new old stuff (does that make sense?) costs $$$. Count on finding some rust in there also.....it will be hiding in there somewhere. There is nothing like the satisfaction of doing it yourself. Go for it!!!!

Is the 260z clock a direct replacement for the crapped out 240 one? I guess that the dims are the same but what about connectivity?
