Look what was hiding!!!!!!
This is what you get if you leave your Zed in the rain for years. Water dribbles enters via a perished door rubber, then travels along the underneath of the door sill plate, happily sitting in its own juice eating away at your thin sheet metal. Anyone for swiss cheese :tapemouth :surprised :hurt: I now feel kinda lucky to have driven it so hard without it falling apart whilst in it. By the way, I've killed the rust in the photo and taken off the paint to see the worst of it. Amazingly, the rest of the car isn't as bad as this....other side is not a bad but will require the same treatment. New rocker steel to go in. Anyone else have a Zed like this?????

Key codes
New key broke off the first lobe. Not enough meat on the key....must be wrong type....Locksmith to get the hurry up tomorrow.
-
Key codes
Locksmith tried putting a M in front...no good. Then he tried putting a N in front...no good also. Pulled RHS lock apart and made a new key. Works in both doors, not hatch, not glove box nor fuel flap. Hatch lock doesn't have a code stamped on it. My old key never locked it so I'm sure that it is not an original. I'm now going to turn the house inside out AGAIN!!! and find my old set...aaarrrgfgghhh )(^%$@$#!(@, (*&*^ing locks!!!!! The joys of the Zed, hmmmmmm. I'm still smiling though....until I write my next post that is.

Bugger - R180 LSD I bought is actually a R160 - is it still useful
Bruce Woolmore (a member here) should also be able to help. He's also a member of the Auckland Z Club. If you know of any other LSD's about, be sure to give me the heads up.

Hell, I was thinking about bidding for that. Hard luck. Have you any recourse with EBay and the seller????

Key codes
I took off the drivers door lock and it has just a 4 digit code. The hatch lock has no numbers stamped at all. I'm thinking that I might take a punt on telling him that he should put a M in front and try that on their lock computer records. I'll let you all know the outcome. Locksmith says that he can pull the lock apart, figure out the tumblers and then cut a key anyway. All for $30NZ, that's US$18....not too bad. Cheaper than relocking the entire car. Remember that the door key also locks the glovebox.

Key codes
Lost Zed keys whilst moving house. Looked everywhere but they are gone gone gone. So I wrote down the key codes on the sticker located inside the glovebox. Local Nissan dealer is useless.....a waste of space!!! Local locksmith is a goodin. He looked up his computer and cut the ignition key from just the number I supplied him. Door key is a different matter. The code is 4 digits long. He says that it should start with a letter. It sure doesn't. Do all S30's have 4 digit lock codes?

What's this bung for?
Thanks Enrique. Yes....I guess that means I will a pair of these "socks" as well. Anyone got a spares?

What's this bung for?
Cheers guys, Another Zed mystery put to bed! Thanks MikeW. The left hand bung split when I removed it so I was needed a new one, cheers for the link. Fired the old girl up last night, hadn't been running for 4 months. Plugs out, turned over to get that oil and fuel running, plugs back in and 20 seconds of coughing then varoom....splutter cough fart....varooooooooom. Ticked over for 10 minutes then off. That head leak has come back from #6, albeit a trickle then drip then stops. Looking more like a gasket problem, as when cold a leak, then warms up head expands and closes issue. I'm going to have to pull the head dig around. Time to port match anyway. Slowly stripping from the hatch forward...finding minor surface rust but the hatch threshold is eaten out....aaarrrggghhhhhh...the joys of owning a early Zed. Geezzzzzz

Still pulling Zed apart and finding some interesting things. Attached is a pic of me pointing to a rubber bung. Any ideas what the hole is is covering was/is used for????

1971 240Z Heater Controls
That explains why my Zed was freezing when I drove it home some 500 miles. No matter what I did to the heater controls, I was only getting cold air out of the centre vent and side eyeballs. The controls are completely rock solid anyway, so I couldn't select room. Would selecting "room" stop fresh air from coming out these 3 vents? Any tricks to rebuilding the entire heater system?

door ding strips
Mine were screwed on. Get rid of them. The PO left the car out in the rain for a bit. Water settled beneath the strips and ate into the metal, so much so that I have some extensive welding to do before the car will be structurally sound again. Once I have finished the car will garaged so I won't put them back on. They are stuffed anyway and I don't see that buying new ones would be on the cards, there are far more important things left to do than buy expensive add-ons.

B pillar "240Z" badge removal
Not sure why you can't open the link. Yes the hatch vents that are found on the series 1 are great at letting in exhaust fumes. Air rushing past an open window creates a vacuum. The vacuum sucks outside air though the hatch vents and into the holes that are on the bottom edge of the hatch. Lovely smell...not. This of course is added by old perished hatch seals too. The smell of petrol is more a result of perished tank hoses. Good idea to change them. So to get rid of the smell you need to replace seals and hoses. Or never fill the tank to the top. As for getting the badge off, I've pulled the internal plastic bits off and have gained access to the rear of the badge. I can see the pins poking through into the cavity and soon they will be pushed on to move the badge off. Thanks for the tip to use a V lever, I'll give that a go if the push doesn't work. While the car will get all new paint, I still don't want to damage it, the metal is thin enough as it is....yikes.

RHD Conversion. Yeah I Know!
You'll need a passenger to be your on coming traffic eyes, or risk getting the LHS sliced off, as you overtake that 18 wheeler.

Another vote just posted.....go Zed go!

A new member to my family.
Sweet. Good to see that another NZ ZED has a good home. Tell me.....have you lined them up against each other yet????? You know you are wanting to find out. My guess is that the GTR will go as if it was towing Shadbolts concrete mixer against a Zed. Make sure you get the VIN, engine number details over to sjcurtis, so he can update the register. Good luck with it and don't nick those carbs for yours! When your next up in CHCH, drop in for a chat. James

B pillar "240Z" badge removal
Trying to get this badge off the B pillar but it won't budge. I don't want to force it cause it just tells me it wants to break in half. What's the catch?

Pic of my z, other car and house.
I'm figuring that almost all of the members on this site would like that car in our garages. Well done on a sweet looking Zed. There is hope for mine and all us resto project maniacs. What colour code is that orange. Standard Datsun???

6 carbs???
You've got me started too. I miss my Suzuki RGV250. V twin 250cc production racing rice burner pocket rocket. Evil bike turned quiet owner into racing dork everytime I rode it. Problem is with bikes is that they hate being riden slow. Especially a 2-stroke. I always carried 2 spare spark plugs around as they regularly crapped out. Sold the bike as I lost my licence on it. But what fun. More fun than a Zed................nah! Have you thought about using some mukuni single trottle bodies. Pretty much a single side draft, no slide just a butterfly. High and low speed jets are real easy to adjust. I ran one on my Methanol powered Yamaha YZ125 gokart. That was more fun than the Zed!!!
-
6 carbs???
I'm doubting it would sound any different? Why would it? As Victor points out, DCOE's are single trottle bodies that share a common float bowl. Apart from looking wicked, are there any benefits to going with such a setup? Great pic Alan!!!!:classic:
