240z weight 70,71,72,73?
Series 1 240's, from 70 to early 71 are 2200lbs from memory. In regard to the weight of L24 engines. I think they would be the same stripped down to the block and head. The only difference being the type of carbs even that weight would be minimal. You would have to think that the L28 would be the lightest block. The bore is bigger, so you would lose weight there. The piston is bigger but that would still be less than the iron removed from the bores. But but the stroke is longer so add some extra weight on the crank. Not much in it I would hazard a guess.

Dead Z 2
Nustad bet me to posting pics of it. I purchased....yes I paid money for it....this car for the parts. The body as you can see is shot. Nothing metal is worth saving. Lucky enough, I need the internal bits as well as the mechanical, so that part of it is great. Once it is stripped it will be crushed or maybe a 240z in a demodarby????? That would be interesting but just imagine how much steel I'd have to weld in it to make it safe.

Rare Solomon Islands 73 240Z uncovered
I have a copy of the ownership papers here and they tell me that it was imported to NZ in July 74. That means it was only in the Solomons for about a year. The first registered NZ owner was a Mr. Willem Aart DE BRUIJN. I wonder if it was his over there or if he just imported it.....I'll never know. So I guess I shouldn't be so hasty to blame the salt conditions. I guess that I can blame the sweat shop that is Auckland.......(I now run for cover).

Mike, How much are you asking for the fronts. Can you post some pics of the fronts. I might be interested in obtaining them if they don't hang out past the guard lip. James

Rare Solomon Islands 73 240Z uncovered
Yes, living a life in the Solomons really cost this car. I reckon it was sitting on the beach all day drinking coconut milk with a dram of vodka and ice and maybe a dash of tobasco. Just wait until I post pics of the doors....OMFG! Sills....what sills. The bonnet only open by about 45 degrees. Floors....what floors, all the floors are doing is stabilising the gearboxes from tipping over. My series 1 has a aftermarket steering wheel which I don't like so the 73's will be used after some considerable resto work on it. Oh the joys!

Rare Solomon Islands 73 240Z uncovered
It was on New Zealands version of ebay. I won the auction without viewing it as it was in Auckland. I got it down to the South Island via rail. Cost a bit but the spares are invaluable for what I am doing to my series 1. It is very very hard to get parts for 240z's in New Zealand. So a parts car is great. My series 1 windscreen is stuffed. The PO ran the wipers without a section of rubber, the result is a scar that won't pass our "warrant of fitness" standards. So the parts car has already helped out. I'm not too sure when it was imported into NZ. The ownership papers are in the car somewhere, but I haven't pulled everything out yet to find them. Interesting enough though, someone has had a lot of fun with this car. I just noticed that the battery has been relocated....I don't know where to yet as I can't see for the gearboxes in the passenger well. But the tray is gone and a very large cable disappears down the tranny tunnel. I just have to find some more room to store stuff. I should have built a triple garage....now I need a shed.

Rare Solomon Islands 73 240Z uncovered
Introducing "His Holeyness, the 101370th 240Z" Yes its true, I have received my rare as rocking horse shite, Solomon Islands limited edition 73 240z. Complete with more rust that you can't poke a stick at. If there was an example of a rusty zed, then this is it. Body is shot. L28 with triple 44's, with 2 spare 44's. 2 diff's, 3 gearboxes, spare L24 with round tops and E31 (takes my hoarding to 2 x E31 now). Interesting wheels. Has vented disks up front. Car to be stripped for parts and then it will fall apart. We open the hatch by just bending it back up on the roof. We can't stop laughing at it.

Couple questions related to storage
I haven't run my L24 for nearly 6 months now. I squirted about 5ml of oil in each of the spark plug holes and then turned it over by hand a few times to get the oil coated in there. I figure that I should turn it over by hand every month just to keep the oil up in the bores. As the bearing shells hold oil, I'm hoping that I won't do any damage by hand turning. Also I'll put some more oil in shortly as I figure the oil could have seeped past the rings.....I am being very anal about it but I you know how you can get about these Zeds....bonkers. But if it doesn't hurt it then I say why not do it. At the very minimum, it gives me peace of mind that I'm doing eveything I can to help stop issues. Does anyone know any problems with putting oil down the bores. I imagine that there will be a heap of smoke on start up but what about glazing of the bores. Is this a possibility?

Couple questions related to storage
Surely you will flatten the battery turning an engine over until the oil pressure comes up! If you were going to do that...and it does sound a good idea, why not take the spark plugs out just prior so that the poor battery isn't fighting against compression. That way it would come up to pressure easy and fast....or am I being over cautious?

L24 piston markings
Pistons in my L24 have 50 stamped on the top of them. What does this denote? Cheers James

Clear Hatch Glass
HS30 #352 doesn't have a rear screen demister. It has a blank over the switch plate and a opaque blank over the side marker switch location on the centre console also.

Japanese/European Marker light switch
Thanks for shedding the light on that switch. I was wondering myself why I have a blank plate in my centre console, and also the bung in the rear cluster. Did the US model have similar bungs or only RHD models? Was there also a lamp in that circuit to let you know that the lights were on?

73' 240z upgrades
Be careful when planning on adding more ponies to that car. There are other less expensive things that can be done before you up the anti as it were....IMO anyway. A car that handles and stops is usually a better car if you aren't concerned about straight line speed. The L24 will lose your license just as well as a big HP motor. 1. Sort those old brakes. Little point going quick if you can't stop it quick. 2. Suspension. How about some Eibach progressive springs. They lower the car by 1" and give a standard ride when driven normally. Load the car and they progressively stiffen, giving you a better sporty ride. Recommended by many here. MSA and VB sells them. 3. Add some anti-sway bars if they aren't already fitted. 4. Adding HP is a collective thing. Start adding things in stages. Maybe a different model head first to raise the compression. Add those big values if you adon't have them already. Some argue that it is best to start out with a L28 as it has 20BHP more as standard. Add a bigger cam! Food for thought?

Welcome to you from "a Different Down Under". It's aways great to have early VIN's around. Not too many left and they are very worth keeping alive, despite the cost. James

carb insulators
From memory they are to help cut down the vibrations. I wouldn't go for solid mounts. I've seen a thread somewhere about it....have you done a search?

Rust question before buying a car.
Well, this sounds like a familiar thread. You can get replacement floor rails and floors from MSA or Zeddfindings. MSA stocks Zeddfindings floors as a premium product. Tabco have a range of replacement panel parts that you may need. I can't remember the link but you can find it under the links section here. For $300 it sounds like a steal. But it all depends on what you want to do with the car. If you want to keep it and turn it into a daily driver, then I would get the car up in the air and have a really good look under it. Tap the frame rails with a hammer and listen carefully for the sound of rust sleeping. It will be there. Take a fridge magnet and run it along the body to see where else the bondo is. Sounds promising though.

Just became a z owner!!!
Welcome to you. Water on the passengers side might be caused by a split water hose that drains the front cowl area. Mine was split and that caused it good and proper. Try putting the hose on the cowl and see if water dribbles in off the door side of the footwell.

Bathurst, Australia 1986, some vid
Those 635CSi's were absolutley delicious. Now was that Peter Brook in that 05 Holden? Doesn't conrod straight seem really long seeing that old footage! It was a good thing to put in that chicane though. I just remember watching when that privateer Commadore hit the bridge and engine looked as though it was in the boot. Anyone got any more footage on wmv.?
