A small crack though! Keep it real guys
  2. Although the head you have is nearly 30 years old and designed on paper, it will flow pretty feel on its own. Just unshroud those valves, port match, new cam, new rockers, set of flows, EI. Don't go too mad with changing the chamber swirl/qench characteristics or you WILL get a worse result. There are plenty of other ways to empty your wallet...e.g brake upgrade and suspension mods. I know it's a bit late now, but transplanting a 280Turbo enigine will give you more HP and better fuel economy without spending massive amounts. If you want a stock engine bay then you are on the right track. If you want all out grunt..2 REAL options for you. 1. V8 2. RB26DETT :lick:
  3. I've never done this but there's a bit on this mod in the "How to modify your Nissan/Datsun OHC engine" by Frank Honsowetz. It is something that will loose CC's and give you a better flowing head at the same time. I take it that you have already installed the bigger valves and steel seats. If your running 10.5:1 you'll need all the protection you can get from detonation. I suggest that you go to Amazon and pick it up. It is a good book with some good info. If you do buy it make sure you goto the Amazon site via a link from this site. Amazon will return a small commission to the club...every little bit helps. :classic:

Are you running a standard 4 speed box and 3.54 diff?

Forgot to add. If I go for this wheel/tyre combo with a L28, 83ZX 5speed, R180 3.545. Using the transmission webpage http://www.geocities.com/z_design_studio/ this works out at 2844RPM at 80mph. 2488RPM at 70mph. Would a L28 with 272 cam have enough torque to run this gear comfortably? I want a cruizy open road car with a bit of poke but like the idea of 17's. Tell me I'm crazy if you have to....I'm just tryin to figure it all out.

    Will 17" x 8" with 225/45/17 fit under a 1" lowered 240Z? Taking into account the correct offset. I don't need an expensive mistake.:tapemouth

Looking at the smaller lip again...I think that it might have been made by cutting down a bigger dam. That would be the easiest but not cheapest way to do it? Moulding polyproplylene sheet and gluing sounds hard work to get the lines perfect.

Got a line on a 81 280ZX. I know I can use the L28, 5 speed, R200, brake booster, rear disk brake setup. Is the tank any bigger? And more importantly..will it fit? What else is good to swap into a 240?

The cheapest thing I've found is a very steep hill. Sorry...I just had too....it's Friday after all. Too many things to list to make it go faster an they all cost $. So you need to figure out how much your pocket can take and then go from there.:sleepy:

Opps...wouldn't load the pic I attached...here is the link. It is the blue Zed http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid18/pa0d8eaf358adbe8bd46ce2812ce13b3b/fdd2f6e0.jpg.orig.jpg

Paul, I agree. Some of dams available make a mess of the lines of the car. Some make it look great...but they all serve the purpose of fixing the light front end. I myself will be swapping all the bushings out to poly as the old rubber ones are now 30 years old and are more than likely shot. After that, a brake, shock, spring, rim and tyre upgrade will all help reduce that front end lightness. The front dam I like is a special that I have trying to track down if it is comercially available. Here it is (the blue Zed). As you can see, it's not really a dam but a little lip....and I doubt that it will make any diffrenece at all to the handling but everything is a compromise one way or another.
  12. You want a 5 speed out of a 81-83 280ZX. http://geocities.com/zgarage2001/engine.html scroll down to the transmission section. You also may want to check out what the ratios will do to your revs....here's a good website to figure out what you have/want/need. http://www.geocities.com/z_design_studio/ :cross-eye

Rick...you're a sick man but I like that sense of humour..what was her name??? If anyone can make it to this years Goodwood Festival of Speed on the weekend of 12 July, you'll be able to see the Brabham and many more old F1 cars in action on the hillclimb circuit. www.goodwood.co.uk This year sees 2002 F1 teams competing. BAR, McLaren, Jaguar, Renault and Williams....all the top F1 drivers will be there. Also this years Le Man cars will have a go. Curent record for the 1.16 mile hill climb is 41 seconds by in a 1999 McLaren F1.....anyone who knows this place knows how quick this is....in places the road is only 5 metres wide and on one side is a 3 metre solid flint wall and the other dense woodland......take the gooles out and go for it they do. A cracking weekends entertainment in the UK.:beard:

Not really...with all driving...it's not dangerous unless you hit something or you drive beyond the limits of the car. High speed driving in a Zed can have it's moments. Just read a few posts here and you'll find that the Zed gets a light front end at speed. To reduce the "AWR ****" phrase from arriving , install some new poly bushings up front (those old rubber ones are 30 years old and need replacing). The poly will give you a harder ride as they don't give as the rubber will and you get a better feel. Also install an airdam under the lower valance. This will divert that unwanted air from slipping under the car by pushing it to the side. The result is the front will say put at speed. The best example of removing air from under the car was seen on the 1978 F1 Brabham Fan car. Just under the rear wing a huge fan was placed that was mechanically driven off the engine. This fan sucked all the air from under the car out the back with massive CFM. There were side skirts and sprung curtains that sealed the car on the road. The result was that it handled like it was on rails....broke the lap record during qualifying...got pole buy about 5 seconds but was banned by the FIA before the race. Just imagine what would have happened if it broke that seal while cornering...yes a flying F1 car. Turned out that the FIA banned all F1 manufacturers from using a meachanical fan to extract air from under the car. Side skirts and curtains remained OK. Next race Brabham turned up with a new design that bent the rules again. They installed 2 electric fans in each side pod behind the radiators and said that they were for cooling...yes they were but the drew air from under the car in the process...cunning lot...again it smashed the track record and made pole by a mile....yep it was banned before the race. Classic F1 history. And the old golden rule...cars aren't dangerous...it's the driver who makes it that way.

Unfortunatley, the airbag option was only available via the drivers lungs upon presentation of the chest on the steering wheel. :stupid: Airbags were not available in the 70's...only lots of hard surfaces to hit...sorry. There are some aftermarket airbag steering wheels available but don't buy one as the seldom work. The best think you could do is invest in a brake upgrade and a new set of seat belts.
  16. I bet the price is Falken high too.

Sorry big mistake...forget option 2...it won't work as the key needs to be on to actuate the starter cog onto the flywheel. So if you tried that and it fires up you'll end up stalling.
  18. 240znz replied to AxtellZ's post in a topic in Help Me !!
Your starter motor is about to die. What has happened is common. The current flows to the coils in your starter motor via a set of brushes. These brushes arc to the (forgotten what it is called...stator...cumulator..it was long time ago???) coils via a small area. It's this small copper area that is on it's way out or some of the coils are stuffed. Maybe the brushes ar about gone...they do wear out and after nearly 30 years...might just be gone. When you turn your key a small current goes to the solenoid that fires a hefty contact (that's the noise you hear) thus switching current to the brushes. If all is well, current flows though the stater coils and that turns your engine. You have 4 options. 1. Put up with it or... 2. When it happens again...put your car in 2nd and rock it back and forth a bit, this will move the starter motor rotor to a different location...then turn your key again...should start or... 3. As HMsports says...take it to a auto electrician and they'll check it over for you...may just need a new set of brushes or the stator might be totalled. 4. Buy a new starter motor....don't know how much they cost but a recon one vs a new one wouldn't be a hell of a lot of difference...and I'd always go for that piece of mind factor. Good luck:classic:

Yes...you do have to purchase a catalog for a small fee ($5 I think) You get that back when you place your first order...or you did the last time I checked.

Spend some dosh on a brake refurb/upgrade, some poly bushings as well. It'll handle like it's on rails and stop dead. It's all and well goin fast but if you can't turn or stop..that Civic will have ya. After that get some new shocks..the old ones are probably poked and then some new springs. Well done and get completly lashed for weeks...I did.:cross-eye
