i am not sure what to ask. i install a 280zx motor(P90A head/F54 block). the car overheated. i gues its because of the burst rubber hose but the mechanic said its because i use a wrong head gasket. My question is what year 280zx should i say and should i say it has turbo. i dont know.. i bought the head from a junk yard and i did not see a turbo on the car, and i bought the F54 short block from a Z-car person in glendale. The mechanic said that i need more holes on the gasket. what year should i say the motor is when the part store ask for the year of the car? help hardie

hi everyone, i replace my 240z(72) motor with a 280z motor from an 83. it was very powerful motor compare to my dying 240 motor. i use it for 1 day, and unluckily i burst a water hose(old) and the motor overheated. head gasket is broken. i replace it (my first time). everything went smoothly except when i am about to install the sprocket and timing chain. it just wont reach the cam. i lift the sprocket with the cherry picker it wont go, i use a crowbar to left it , nothing move, i turned the crank to check if i have a kink down the crank, nothing , it turns ok. if you have done this before, or have an idea how i can install it without opening the whole front, please let me know. thank you so much, hf240z@yahoo.com

i am in the process of rebuilding the front suspension and stirring. i have a couple of question. my 72z is not for race, it is for work transport. 1. which bushing is preferrable a) rubber bushing or Polyurethane. 2. original strut (hydraulic fluid) cartridge or gas cartridge. 3. original r180 rear or r200? 4. 4spd or '79 5 spd (i have both)? 5. i know a 240z is a small car, is it capable of hauling a seadoo trir? 6. original exhaust or headers? i thank you so much. hf240z@yahoo.com

i am installing an F54 block and P90a head in place of the original 240z motor. My question is the oil pump i am using did not come with the motor. some people say i need a oil pump from a turbo to lift the hydraulic lifter on a P90a head. is it true? is there any way i can differentiate the oil pump for hydraulic lifter and oil pump for solid lifters?

Hi, i have a good running 240 which create too much noise on the crank area and lossing oil pressure as the oil gets hot. so i decided to start building another motor. the one i bought is from a 280 with an "F54" ($150.00) stamped on the side and the head has "p90a"($98.00) stamped between ist and 2nd spark plug. do i need to buy a different set of intake and exhaust manifold for it? i already bolt in the fuel pump. Are the mounting brackets the same as the 240's? i am also replacing my 4 spd with a 5 spd(77 280z)($89.00), can you pls give me some tips on what i need to have to do this and so i can avoid some unnecessary expenses? thanks, hf240z@yahoo.com

thanks, it might not be venting period because i use a regular hose without a bend to go with the direction of the pipe coming out of the tank, and when i pulled the rubber to reach the vapor tank (or something at the back of the car), i might have kink the hose, hence, vent is block... i will connect somemore hose at the end to give it some more slack. thank you so much, hf

Hi, i've been reading Haynes repair manual looking for the torque setting for the bolts on the camshaft holder(tunnel - i dont know the term) and i dont think its mentioned anywhere. Does anyone know how much torque i should put. i am using a 10 mm socket to it, so i am thinking it should not be more than 15lbs. thanks, hf

thank you to every one that replied to my problem. it is solved already. this is what i did. i clean that part attach to the left fender. it has 3 air port. two in and 1 out. i attach the port that can be suck to the carb and the other two to the crank case vent and gas tank vent. i think before i clean it the carb hose is connected to one of the vent port.

i bought a 72 240 last christmas. the motor is not that good anymore. so i am thinking of rebuilding one. i heard somebody said that a maxima diesel crankshaft is good. i want to know why(please), what year maxima, what are the other parts that should go with it, how will i know if the crank is from a diesel if the block is not there anymore(taking the motor out in the junk yard is very laborious). So i am thinking hunting for it at the swapmeet.

i have a 72 240z that smell gasoline every time. if my windows are close i does not smell but if i open it ,oh boy, smell like all i need is a small spark and it will ignite. I trace the rubber hose already and there is no leak. i know its coming from the front. i know the carburator is not leaking either. where else can i look for the source of fresh gas smell (not exhaust smell).
  20. hi, i have a 73 240z with a stirring wheel that moves left to right all the time, its uncontrollable. it does not affect the car travel but its very uncomfortable. All the linkage have been replace( ball joint, tie rod). can any one tell me the compatibility of a 73 240z rack and pinion with the later model. Its easier to find a later model z in the junk yard. ty, hfcuda@yahoo.com
