Cam Cover
Thanks for the compliment. I first cleaned it up pretty good, sanded in stages down to 1000 / 1500 grit, the gave it Mothers. The painted areas were not polished, but thoroughly cleaned, then primed, then painted with a good high-temp paint. I then sanded (second time) with a block over the letters and ridges to bring back the metal. Painted areas, lettering, and ridges were then clear coated with high-temp. The balance of it is bare metal with the medium polish that you see.... I don't think I will be clear coating that due to possible paint adhesion problems on polished aluminum. I'm working on another too, but media blasting instead of polishing. That one will get some paint like the first one and clear coat overall in the end.

Fixing steering wheel cover
I used JB-Weld and a piece of rope & screwdriver - Put rope around after putting in the epoxy and tighten with a screwdriver (just like getting a tire to take a bead on a rim when adding air..... Beats spending a wad of cash for a new one....

Schwing!!!
Well, now that the price for entry to get an interview to become a potential owner has dropped, I can focus better on some other things of major concern.... like conedodger's avitar...... After looking at that, why would I care if it's Ypou or her evil twin? Admittedly, I know neither one of them... I'll take the bait and ask how do I get to meet either one of them?

Schwing!!!
For those of you that found the $50K too high, please take note that the price has been reduced to $40K..... Now affordable to all of us (not).

Hard start - just tuned and it won't fire!
Just curious.... what brand and number spark plug is in the car? I've had dismal results with anything other than NGK. It may be worth your time to pull them out to see what they look like. Also, I've had coils short out when hot.... just a thought or two. Please keep us posted with results.

DeVilbiss Compressor
DeVilbiss 6.5 HP / 80 gallon / 175 psi / two-stage / 16.9 SCFM @ 175 psi - Not the biggest in the world, but adequately meets all of the demands that I throw at it, including a real air hog of a large bead blasting cabinet. I took some advice to buy a bit bigger than I think I'll need, and I'm very glad that I did. It makes me happy.

Radiator
Same as previous picture from another angle. I prefer not to run without the shroud. In the old days, the shroud and belly pan were 'in the way' and most often discarded.... Their value is now apparent to me for an efficient cooling system.... not that easy to find for reasonable prices these days, either.
-
Radiator
I took the original 1972 (leaking) radiator to a local shop and had it re-cored with a modern three-row tight finned replacement. This preserved the top & bottom pans keeping things visually 'correct'. The shroud wasn't the easiest thing to find, but I got a correct metal one eventually for a good price on eBay.

car won't start... after I got gas
After watching the video, I retract my suggestion in post #8 - the car is turning over well but not firing.... Take Stephen's advice on the starter, and Beandip's suggestion to see if you have spark. If you have spark, check to see if you have fuel flowing. Also, just for kicks, check to see if the distributor is tightly secured.

car won't start... after I got gas
By "won't turn over" do you mean that you turn the key and nothing happens, or at least not enough to start, maybe some grunts & clicks and that's the end of it.... and only after it's warmed up? That's what I'm assuming here. I had that problem very much as you describe it. The solution for me was new battery cables - it got somewhat better after I cleaned the post connections with the old cables, but never completely went away. New cables resolved that completely (among several other annoying things). Now, I think yours is an '80, and mine is a '72, so there could be other issues at play that I would be ignorant of, so it's FWIW. NAPA had some nice cables on the shelf for a reasonable price - they worked like a charm. Just take the measurements along with you. For plugs... take the advice given and use NGK. Odd, but on some of these Z-cars NGK is the only thing that will work for an extended period of time. Please let us know what resolves your problem.

Pertronix upgrade on a 240z 72
I could be wrong, but for the 240Z I recall the Pertronics instructions suggest keeping the ballast resistor in the system. I have mine that way and have no problems.

Splash Pan for 240Z (or 260Z, or 280Z)
I found this belly/splash pan on eBay.... Seller represents it as off a 240Z, but if memory serves me well, it's off of a 280Z.... Please correct me if I'm wrong. I have one waiting to go on my '72 240Z that does not have the hole for the radiator hose (and I think several other differences as well). I resurrected mine from my (now deceased) '73, and am pretty sure it's a proper fit for the '72.shttp://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/240z-Belly-Pan-OEM-Rare-Under-Motor-260z-280z-Datsun-NR_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ42611QQihZ011QQitemZ320234027276QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW Am I thinking correctly?

A ScuzzyZ Model?
This guy has some talent! I'd actually consider buying one done well like that.

'72 240Z at Barrett Jackson
I'm not picking... this car looks nice, but are the mirrors correct? They do not look like what I think a '72 should look like, and shouldn't there only be one on the left side?

Best Repair Manual
I use all three plus several others that I have picked up. It seems that often I will understand how a procedure is to be done after reading several different explanations of it.... The most through IMO, and the one I rely on most, is the FSM and sometimes the others help me to best understand it.

hello
Welcome, z2b !! Always great to have another Z-owner on board.... and from the east coast as well (as am I), Great!! You will find this to be a good group of people, and the archives are simply full of information..... and with some past 'ownership' behind you, you'll soon likely be contributing as well.

How to get better fuel economy?
Here's an interesting article on current gas prices, driving, and consumer trends in Germany: http://worldblog.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2008/03/18/781155.aspx Despite very high - and constantly rising - gas prices, fuel sales still increase.

A ScuzzyZ Model?
He's obviously a well experienced Z owner. Actually that's a pretty impressive rendition. He should now record a "restoration process".

Multiple probs..
I agree with the scale issue that 240Zx referenced. That is often an issue. The radiator shroud is IMO a very functional and important part of the cooling system when the original fan unit is still in use. It concentrates air flow through the radiator. You may need that air flow very much when you are not moving. On the issue of getting the junk out of the block, what product does the job? I should flush out mine, too.

How to get better fuel economy?
Honestly, I plan upon driving the ****ens out of my Z for the next year. The cost of doing so now is still affordable. I feel that the time is not far away when it will really be a luxury to do so, so enjoying it now is my plan. I was at the gas station yesterday talking with a friend who was filling up his pickup.... $100.00.... about 30 gallons.... he must do that at least once a week.... made my $30.00 fill-up not as painful as usual.

eBay Item number: 160222065742 - 260Z
Nice descriptive listing. Good luck with the sale, Roy. Note to self: Do not promise the wife "Honey, I only bought it to drive while working on my 240Z".

burnout tips
I think he's getting exactly the response that he's looking for from us.... This seems to be the kind of person that would go to the zoo and poke the tiger with a stick just for laughs. Why any of us - including myself - responded is beyond me. ... What Stephen said in post #10.

My beautiful girl
That really, really, really looks nice Juan.... Your efforts are paying off.
