Electric fan or new fan clutch/shroud for my 240z?
actually after running the electric fan for a short while, I'm NOT satisfied with it's performance... ... Happily I kept the original fan/clutch and have re-instated it. although the electric fan does reduce drag on the engine, I dont believe the difference is significant.

What would cause this?
probably a break in the wire somewhere.... or corrosion....??by the way you described the intermittent on again-off again pump while driving sounds like thatis most likely your problem.I believe the wires are in the harness that goes to the taillights. that is where I would start. sometimes things that are not even seemingly related are involved because of the way circuits are wired.check all wires in the cargo area first for any damage, then follow that harness to the fuse block checking all the way up.. not a fun project but you could end up saving$$$$ good luck.

Eletrical grounds?
honestly it does not really cost much to repair a harness and to properly start the diagnosis process correctly you should be starting with that in my opinion. much less guesswork in the end. you can test each wire at the terminals and determine the faults in the system, as well as visually inspect for corrosion or weak connections. if there was any water in its history, you can bet that something is surely corroded somewhere. when I did mine, I was very suprised at how much damage just a little water can do to old wires that "seemed" watertight. happy hunting!

Eletrical grounds?
I would split the wire harnesses open and inspect for corrosion and damage from the water. I did this on mine and solved all my "gremlins" be sure to label every plug you disconnect either as you go or ahead of time while things are still connected. look for bad connections(corroded) chances are though that after the whole mess getting soaking wet and sitting for several years, you may end up having to start over completely with new wiring for most of the car....

Welding Masks
i cant see as the battery drain would be very much in a mask, however if there is a big price diff, then that would be my deciding factor....just my thoughts.

280z $800
it is worth more in parts than anything else. it looks as if there would be too much work to get it in shape. starting over from scratch can be very expensive... Ive seen better in the JY here recently in fact with MUCH less rust and damage

Electric fan or new fan clutch/shroud for my 240z?
I'd go with the electric fan alone. you dont need the clutch with the electric fan and its thermostat.(removing the clutch fan will give you a slight "boost" in performance as it reduces drag on the engine too) I did this with mine and it works great.

wont to buy 260z
I have an early 74 260Z (spent its whole life here in california, and heavily burdened with lots of smog/performance reducing features)when I bought it it was all original but "well maintained" after investing in some ZT carbs it runs like a whole other car.WOW! after installing those (and removing certain other things...)my next adventure is to hopefully remove some "electrical issues"...(safety interlock system)
