I would like to do the entire system on the 73. I have no idea which way to go.

Almost makes me want to move to the mainland, just to get to the shows.
  3. Automatic transmission fluid
  4. Gina - There is no accounting for how much emotional attachment is worth, only you can decide that, but there is a way to asses the value of your car and determine if it is worth the effort (and cash) of restoring. I recommend you go over the car realistically and write down it's strong points and negatives. Determining this will give you a start point to compare it to other cars that are similar and currently for sale. You may find a quick look at ebay or Craigslist will put it in perspective very quickly. A major point to concider is whether or not you are capable of doing some of the work yourself. If you are not, then you are at the mercy of the people who seek to offer you help (?) - by this method you would be far better off to just go to the market and buy a similar car in better condition. Body work and a paint job done half decent will cost about enough to get a fair to good 83. There is however no accounting for emotional attachment. Your call. Good luck
  5. Randy - you're still asking all the good questions and I'm still several steps behind you on the engine. Just removed my carbs last night and I am replacing four screws (which replaced the flattops) with three screws from ZTherapy. I intend to get the old (coolant) setup functional. The same thing happened to me last night but slightly different - had to clean the spacers (they had the holes blocked with sealant) when they came off, a couple of litres of coolant dumped on the floor of the shed through the carb cooling lines. It was all hooked up with the lines blanked at the spacer. It's a learning experience. I'm going with Beandip on this one - I get what he's saying - the manufactured purpose is to warm the carbs at startup and whether intented or not it would make sense that it keeps them a little cooler when the engine (and exhaust manifold) is heated up.
  6. Definately overkill. the black one will do the trick fine. If anything using both will cause a bump with regular shock travel. Where did you get the strut boots?

I think you need your head examined! The other point is Carbon monoxide - your cabin will fill with the deadly gas and you will not even know what happened - you'll be gone for the dirt nap.
  8. There are different types and pedegree. There is a 70 Z from Franklin mint that sells for about $50 USD and at a glance looks like these, but a closer look reveals it is a superior unit. I have one and it has good reproduction details, like functioning suspension with control arms, complete exhaust system, antennae, spark plug wires and generally pretty good detail that is true to the real thing. I don't know if any are actually worth $50, but I like the one I have. I would like to see some better close up shots of these.
  9. It seems that when everything is going great, you better take another look. I got at it first thing this morning - so far got it out, b/s installed, strut assembly back in place and bolted in. After a coffee I'll torque everything down and hook up the xle and brakes ... back on track ... I hope. This wasn't my only bugger up, but I'm hoping there aren't anymore for a little while anyway. I don't know about anyone else but for me if I get rattled by something like this it will cause more f/ups as I go along. Better to just sit back and suck on a beer til it passes.
  10. I spent the day today reassembling the rear end of my 240. Control arms/struts all cleaned up and painted, new springs, shocks and bumpstops. Everything in place and torqued down. Feeling pretty good about my progress I took on the steering gear and got it all ready for tomorrow. After a good supper and family get together we got our warm gear on for a neighbourhood bonfire. Put on my sweater and What's this in my pocket? A bumpstop. :stupid::mad::tapemouth:disappoin:sick: while assembling the passenger side rear strut I was interupted, I went into the house to tell my son to close his bedroom windows during drum practise (ultra loud). On the way in I put the b/s my pocket and forgot it until I put my sweater back on. Ruined my night or a part of it - but what can you do. Gotto grin and bear it I guess - steering gear has to wait for another day or at least a half a day . Have you ever had an experience like this?
  11. I just got a kit from MS - don't think I will install the m/b bushings for the reason Beandip mentioned. My 280 has the poly all through (except outer control arms) and it is loud. I am only doing the stuff thats essential due to decay.
  12. Misunderstood the post :stupid: I can say that there is a section in tech stuff on the Atlantic Z site - I used that when I was doing my bearings and it worked out well.
  13. Brainfart - sorry

Rick #1 - are you saying "Precious" passed under the bull? I'ld say that's the only chance a Z has - duck and pray. Occasionally the front end will pass between the front and rear legs and the entire torso of the moose will enter through the windshield - thats what Z brings to my mind. The p/o was pretty lucky. Must have been a long legged bull or a jumper Here's some pics of the latest event after leaving my yard to have a snack at the neighbours place at sun up: A little breakfast Mom and calf My son, sending them on their way.

Randy - you are asking all my questions. All I have to do is read all your threads. Keep it up

Thanks for the tip Chris - I will try it. As much as I like seeing them, it grinds my gears to see the damage they do each year. My neighbour has more damage than me - you snooze, you lose. Latest sightings were at 0630 - my son nailed them in the butt with flat head pellets (from the deck) - doesn't break their skin or scare them much, but they seem to get irritated enough to leave though. The biggest threat is on the highway though - best aid is "reduce speed". Ron - thanks, I'm still pretty quick on my feet

Moose season again, buggers are back eating trees and as usual I am chasing them like a mad man with a stick (and a prayer that they are more frightened of me than I of them). Had four sightings in my yard over the past two weeks. 1000 lb tree trimmers. They are on the road this time of year and plentiful. People around here have to be very cautious at dusk and dawn cause thats when they are out on the roads for some reason. People who drive fast at these time are really taking their lives in thier hands. Here's an example of what happens - this guy was divided on the highway - looks like the front went through the windshield and the rest went somewhere else and landed in the stream beside the road. Imagine if you hit it in a Z at 70 or 80 mph.
  18. Last year I got a local shop to changeover my transmission (to 5 speed) install a clutch and PP, new slave cylinder and balance the wheels for around $400. This auction info sounds like a severe hosing or exageration.

You can get an original for less than $200 - I got one two years ago for $70, like new.

I have my two snow blowers and the 280 in temporay quarters till I get the 240's suspension installed (waiting for parts). Here it is.

Hi Pascal - Welcome to the site. I do alot of parts importing and I can definately tell you this much for a person far from parts sources - spend the money to get a good Z to start with - it will save you money very quicky. I recently located a sensor in Texas for my 77 - the box would weigh .25 kg and be less than 10 X 10 cm - the part cost $55 USD the shipping (to be charged by the vendor) was around $70 USD. The point being - to build a car from parts is expensive, if you include shipping of the parts it is at least "expensive X 1.3" maybe more. Not all vendors will reem you like that, but some will and shipping overseas is a little pricier anyway. I think in your case - money up front for a superior car is the best way. Good luck One other thing: alot of shipping companies will not permit you to ship anything in the car while in thier care.
  24. Hey Micheal - all wheel drive Skyline sounds sweet, I wonder how they are for snow? I like most of the cars you listed - to me it would be a matter of best fit - I'm a big guy too and I really understand car fit. btw: The Altima 3.5 is a hoot as well with ample headroom, goes like stink and easy on gas. You wiil have to post the results of your search with a pic when you're done.
