I've found one - thanks guys.
  4. Thanks Bruce. When I figure out what questions to ask I'll do that. I'm just getting into it so I'd probably just waste his time at this point. Michael
  5. Here's the thread Chris mentioned: clicky I just did some searching for a manifold. Z Specialties quoted a price almost 9X what I got elsewhere ($175 vs. $20). Both used parts, similar condition. Maybe it was a fluke, I don't know. But anyway shop around before you buy.
  6. Hi Chris, I'm not necessarily looking for Nissan P/N's, more the Hitachi P/N's like the one you just listed. So far we have info from the '71 and '72 FSM, so I was wondering if there was any difference in '70 model. But if I had been paying closer attention I woudl have noticed that ChrisA may have already answered that when he posted that his number is "up to 8/71", like you just said. I guess I missed that. But to be sure I would like to compare the spec details in the '70 FSM. Now as for why I'm doing this: I'm trying to figure out how the various "SU" type carbs differ and what parts interchange. I'm not only looking at the Z carbs, but also Roadster, 510, 210 "GX" carbs, and any others I can find. Once I have the specs I'll go looking for pics to see if there are visual differences to match. Ztherapy's site is a good place to start for that, but unfortunately they just don't link the pics up to P/N's. The reason is I'd like to use my Z carbs on my other dat, but don't know if the SU's interchange. While I'm at it I might as well gather together as much useful info as possible to fill in more pieces of the puzzle. Michael
  7. I didn't realize you were looking at the '73 carbs. I thought you were referring to the other type of carb in the '72 manual. Nevermind. So on one on the site has a '70 manual? Or am I just on too many ignore lists? michael
  8. Carl, I didn't see "SU" mentioned in the "Two Barrel Carburetor" section of the Fuel System chapter where the "DAF342" carbs are covered (downdrafts?). Maybe it's called that somewhere else in the book but not in the Fuel SYstem chapter. Chris, just so that I have it one place here's similar info from my '72 FSM (from the "Specifications and Service Data" sectino and the end of the Fuel System chapter): Applied Engine: L24 (S30) Make and Type: HITACHI HJG46W-8 (MT), -9 (AT) Construction: Side-draft, SU type Bore: 46mm (1.811 in) Weight: 3.1kg (6.834 lb) Venturi: 34mm (1.339 in) Float Level: 23.0mm (0.906 in) Fuel Pressure: 0.24kg-cm^2 (3.414 lb / sq in) Needle valve dia: 1.7mm (0.067 in) Nozzle: A Jet Needle: N-54 Suction Spring: #23 Note that the Needle valve diameters and the jet needles are different between 71 & 72. And my manual doesn't mention the HJL model - not sure what that is Chris. Anyone have data on the '70 model?
  9. Yeah I know why everyone calls them SU's. It just seems to me that a site that rebuilds and sells them could get it right - even if we don't. I still haven't found P/N's there. But Chris, using the number you gave me I was able to find more info by searching the web. The flat tops are Hitachi HBM46W type carbs, and I found this on zcar.com: "The guage shown is a stepped bar 12mm,14mm,16mm thick float bowl #-HJG46W-R3A 70-71 man. trans. rear carb. 13.5-14.5mm. F.B.#-HJG46W-F3A 70-71 man. trans. front carb 13.5-14.5mm. F.B. #HJG46W-R4 70-71 auto trans rear 13.5-14.5 mm. F.B. #HJG46W-F4 70-71auto. trans. front 13.5-14.5mm. #HJG46W-R8B 72 man.trans. rear 11.5-12.5mm. #HJG46W-f8B 72 man.trans. front 15.5-16.5mm. HJG46W-R9A 72 auto.trans rear 11.5-12.5mm.#HJG46W-F9A 72 auto trans. front 15.5-16.5mm." Of course I'd like to confirm all of this with real Nissan lit. Thansk again michael edit: Taking a closer look it looks like those zcar numbers are float bowl P/N's, but it would lead me to believe that there was an HJG46W-8B carb and an HJG46W-9A car also.
  10. Any idea where? As I mentioned in my post, that's where I looked first. Didn't find it on the Z car page, spotter's doc or the price list. In fact, they incorrectly refer to the Hitachi's as SU's throughout and save the name "Hitachi" for the flat tops. Anyway, you'd think they'd have it but I didn't see it. Oh and thanks ChrisA - that's the kind of info I'm looking for! Michael

  12. Anyone know the parts numbers for the various "SU" style Hitachi carbs used on the early Z's? For example, the Roadster used the Hitachi HJB38W-1 and later the Hitachi HJB38W-3. The 510 used the Hitachi HJL38W6, at least for the early years. Are there similar numbers for the Z's? I'm also looking for tech info such as needle types, bore sizes, inlet/outlet sizes, flange shapes etc, basically to figure out interchangability. Figuring out the P/Ns is the first step to finding the rest of the info. Anyway I'm trying to collect as much info on them as possible - I'll likely make it all available on my webpage at some point or write up a tech article. I'll check out my FSM tonight but I only have a '72 FSM. Also, I'm not sure how they differed in the different markets - that should complicate things somewhat. Thanks Michael edit: I did check ztherapy by the way and have done a lot of google searching and still haven't found the Z P/Ns.

C'mon Ed, aren't you going to do another one after this one is done? BTW, the pics look great - awesome job. I'm so jealous... MIchael
  14. I think the 510's use L series engines whereas the 210's are A series. Smaller, not OHC, many other differences probably. You can find a manifold for this application in Oz but they're very rare. I've found one for sale actually but now I'm not even sure it works with the Z SU's. LIke I said, I've got a lot of research to do. Michael
  15. Carl, It's good to know that that port is for the brake booster. I wasn't sure about that. What I'm asking all this for is I'm considering swapping my 210 carbs out for my 240Z SUs. I wasn't sure if I'd still need the balance tube but it sounds like I will. Also I was wondering if I need to pipe heat into the intake somehow but maybe they'll run fine without a heat pipe. Hmmm, this is goign to take a lot of work I can tell already. But before I do anything I need a better understanding of how all of this stuff works. Thanks for the info. I'll keep searching the forums for more tips. Michael
  16. I searched the forums and couldn't find answers to these questions. Thanks for any help/info etc. Ok what does the balance tube on the intake manifold do? Does it simply equalize the pressure between the 2 intakes? Is there some adjustability there? Anything else? Any idea what happens if you block it off? Second thing, anyone know how intake gas temperature affects HP, fuel economy or any other engine "metrics"? If you're going for HP is cool gas better? I know later models piped heat into the intake radiated either from the exhaust or through the air filter. Was this just for emissions reasons? Thanks again michael

You don't have to take another pic. It's hard to read but I believe you I wonder if that was only used for the last year of the 280Z's. Carl Beck told me that when he assembled the list he didn't have access to the '77 and '78 FSM's or parts catalogs, which may explain why this color and 110 aren't on the list, and maybe why he doens't have the Zap yellow or black either. I guess there could be others out there that aren't on the list. I don't have access to any of those catalogs so all of my info is coming from zhome and contributions from people like you. Thanks. I'll go ahead and add the pic and color to the gallery if you don't object. Michael

That's interesting Stephen. I don't remember hearing about this color. Care to donate a pic to the gallery? Do you still have a clear paint code sticker? Michael

See, I actually do still post Z car related messages on this forum!!! Thanks for looking around Michael

Anyone got an old SU manifold sitting around they want to sell cheap? Send me a PM. Need to fit round-top carbs. Doesn't matter which head it bolts to. Maybe could trade thought I don't have much to offer. Michael

Here's my latest: http://datsunprojects.org/zpaintcodes/ I was working on adding international lists (and ZG codes etc) but haven't had time to do it. Maybe some day. Sblake - if you've got info I'm missing let me know. THere was a thread awhile back about orange 280Zs but I thought we decided that they were actually 110 Red. http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12558&highlight=orange+280Z Michael

Well I was thinking of buying this 210 and have someone pull the 5-speed and send it to me, and then let them have the car to do whatever they want with it (keep the engine or whatever, then trash it). But it's too late now. The auction is almost over so it's too late to make any real plans I think. Oh well - I'll just keep looking for a 5-speed. I've seen a few on ebay recently - I should have bid on them!! Thanks anyway Airjockie. Michael
  24. Thanks Inf. If I don't have any trouble removing the head I'll be taking it in tomorrow. They gave me a decent quote on the phone and are open on Saturdays which is the only time I have access to a car. I'll let you know how it turns out. Michael
  25. Oops yeah sorry - read Alan's post in the linked thread to try to figure out what that grill is. I'm not still sure myself.
