Question on replacing shocks
The car is 37 years old and presumably has the original springs. While this is all taken apart it probably makes sense to replace those too huh? Any reason it wouldn't be useful and advised to replace springs when doing shocks? Also - what springs would you guys advise for someone who wants a stock look and ride without breaking the bank? I dont care about crazy high performance and dont want any lowering or raising of height. Thanks

Question on replacing shocks
Where would you get a spring compressor and how much do they cost? Since this is most likely a one time job for me can you rent them?

Question on replacing shocks
I am preparing to replace the worn shocks on my 70Z. I've never done this before and am quite a novice so I've enlisted my Dad to come help. We are both looking at all of the available manuals and they make it quite clear that the entire wheel hub needs to come off to change the shocks. Are we missing something? Is it possible to replace the shocks without removing the entire wheel hub? Can you pull them out the top without removing the entire deal? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks. Derek

Does this point gap look right to you?
Thanks Arne. The emissions equipment is not on the car and hooked up. I'll start with new points, cap, and rotor and go from there. 2 questions: Where would you go to get the best possible parts for this, local dealership? Also - I know there is supposed to be a wee bit of grease along the shaft that the point deal rides along - what type of grease do I use? Thanks...

Does this point gap look right to you?
I am clearly a novice mechanic. Within the past 6 months my veteran Z mechanic installed, balanced and synched new ZTherapy carbs, valve lash adjustment, timing, new points - the works - and it was running like a dream. Recently the car has started having mild backfiring when I take it out of gear and the RPM's drop as I coast to a stop - or any time I rev it then release throttle quickly. I went to the local car show (my mechanic friend is usually there) and since this is a symptom of misfiring we popped the distributor cap and the points were touching which I guess happens over time. To make a long story longer I adjusted the points which is easy but it is not solving the problem. I've tried all sorts of gaps with no improvement. Plugs are fairly new, plug wires are pretty new, I checked the timing and the marks line up. Please check out the picture and see if that tells you anything and please advise if you know other obvious things that I am missing. Thanks..!

Arizona Emissions-test exemption for collector cars gets OK
**Although none of us want to pollute this is good news for me since I struggle to pass with my Z** Emissions-test exemption for collector cars gets OK Bob Golfen The Arizona Republic Dec. 22, 2006 12:00 AM The federal Environmental Protection Agency has approved Arizona legislation that will exempt collectible cars and trucks from emissions testing in Maricopa and Pima counties. The action will allow vehicles 15 years or older to skip emissions for registration but only if they are bona fide show cars or hobbyist items that carry collector-car insurance, which limits annual mileage and restricts use. In reaching approval, the EPA agreed with findings from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality that such vehicles have a "negligible impact" on air quality in the Phoenix and Tucson areas. The EPA action also approved exempting motorcycles in the Tucson area from emissions testing. "We've been saying all along that we're not part of the problem, that collector cars produce insignificant emissions," said Bill Gilmore, a longtime auto hobbyist and legislative lobbyist for collector-car groups. "If we're not part of the problem, we shouldn't be part of the solution." The state study counts about 7,000 vehicles statewide that meet the stipulations for exemption and about 6,200 motorcycles in Pima County. Motorcycles in Maricopa County had been part of the original legislation, but the DEQ determined that exempting the 22,000 motorcycles registered in Maricopa County would have a negative impact on air pollution. "I think it's a good thing for collectors and motorcycle riders in the Tucson area because they really don't contribute in any meaningful way to air-quality problem we have here," said Steve Owens, director of the DEQ. "This is something the hobbyists themselves proposed, and we think this is a good way to address the question." The exemptions bill was passed by the state Legislature and signed by Gov. Janet Napolitano in April 2005, then submitted to the EPA for hearings and study. The Western regional administrator for the federal environmental agency signed the action on Dec. 13. The state exemptions are expected to take effect about March 1. Gilmore was one of the leading proponents for the exemptions, which he said he has been working on since fall 2001. "We've been waiting a long time for this to happen," he said. He owns a 1969 Lincoln Mark III show car that is rarely driven and will be affected directly by the action. No longer will he have to struggle, Gilmore said, to get his old car to pass emissions standards that it was never designed to pass. According to current law, all registered motor vehicles of 1968 and newer vintage must go through emissions to drive on the streets. Older vehicles, which are few in number and have no standard pollution-control devices, are currently exempt. The EPA approval comes in the form of a proposed rule and was submitted to the Federal Register for 30 days of public comment, said Wienke Tax, spokeswoman for the EPA's regional Air Planning Office in Tucson. "Collector cars are a fairly small niche and the law has specific recommendation," Tax said. "It has to be a certain age and stay under a certain mileage, and you have to have another vehicle to drive to work. It can't be your primary vehicle." John Horton, who collects Triumph sports cars from Great Britain, said his collector-car insurance has firm restrictions about how much he drives his cars and how he uses them. "That restricts my driving to 2,000 miles a year, and they're not to be used as daily drivers or used during rush hour," said Horton, a Phoenix resident who also lobbied for the exemptions. "Which is something I would never do anyway. I don't want to tear them up."

Gas dripping at rear after fill-up
As you can see from my post (#2) I have the same issue. As the son of a 35 year Seattle firefighter I too am super concerned with safety as we all should be. My original plan was to drop the tank and do the POR-15 routine described in a wonderful do it yourself article on the site. I am now reconsidering that. I have searched for fuel cell threads and didnt find anything. My questions are: 1) Any advice on where to go for a replacement fuel cell and any perspective on the cost? 2) Are there any decent sources for nice original replacement tanks so I can get a sound replacement that is original (and redo all of the hoses, etc)? I cant find any tanks for sale through my normal sources. Thanks, Derek

...been lurking for about a year...
Hagerty hasn't put a strict mileage restriction on me that I know about. They dont check in with me to see periodic mileage and I pay them $110/year on a declared value of $8k. I drive to the car show every week and take it for a spin maybe once a month for 20-30 miles....I also take it to work every now and then.

That looks tight! How do you like the dash cap? Was it pretty easy to put on? I have been pondering getting one for a while....

Gas dripping at rear after fill-up
Mine does the same thing. I think it's probably a cracked or partially disconnected filler hose. My fix so far is to never fill it up. That is a lame fix but all I can do until I can drop the tank and fix it properly..

Stripped Heater Valve screws
Looks like this is what you are talking about: http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?pid=00952154000 Interesting.......Now if I could just fit my drill up under the dash it might work!

Stripped Heater Valve screws
I think I can get the hose clamps OK - it is the water valve screws that are trouble. I like the slot idea - I'll need to figure out how to get a tool in there...

Stripped Heater Valve screws
I am trying to replace the heater hoses with some nice braided hoses I just bought, as well as the control valve. In addition to being in a brutal place to work while twisted up under the dash, the screws that hold it in place were so stripped out by the PO that the philips head is how a mangled mess. As you can see from the picture, things are corroding in there so I really want to replace the valve while I am there... Any ideas how I can get these screws out in such cramped quarters? I can just get a screwdriver on it but no amount of torque that I can get on them do anything but strip it worse..... I'm sure this is an age old problem but any advice would be appreciated. Thanks...

Which new battery most resembles original?
I went with an Interstate because it is white. I believe the originals had a white 'body'. With the battery brackets it looks pretty tight. Now if I could just pass emmissions.........

Which new battery most resembles original?
It looks like the battery in my 70Z is shot. It wont hold a charge. Can anyone recommend which make and model of new battery looks most like the original battery in a 70/71 Z in physical appearance/color, and in physical dimension (the battery currently in my car is too small to bit the battery hold down hardware properly). Thanks....
