    Tranny Leak

Bummer, checked the tranny fluid level, it is not overflowing. Can't understand why it would leak out the shifter if I have a new shifter "O" ring!!!

    Tranny Leak

Sorry, Jared, for the old thread. I replaced the reverse switch already, am assuming I have too much tranny fluid, which is overflowing through the shifter "O" ring (I guess!). Everything else has been replaced already.

    Tranny Leak

I read a response from Stephen Blake on an old thread that said that if you have a good inner shift boot that you could still have fluid come out if you have too much fluid in your tranny. I have a new shifter "O" ring and a new inner shift boot and I am starting to get the same dripping problem I had above. Figured I can remove the plug, drop the car to ground level and see if any fluid comes out, thus proving I have too much fluid. Any other thoughts?
  4. Mitchell, where did you acquire your louvers, and how much?
  5. I used Dashboard Restorations in WA last year, was very pleased with quality of work. Nice people to talk to, very responsive to questions and concerns. Cost was $850 for early 70 240Z, I believe.
  6. Thanks, Mike, I have never seen that piece before. Guess I need to decide whether to get both peices for each door or not. Haven't had any issues up to this point, but better safe than sorry!
  7. Those are K&N filters, aka "tuna cans". I have them in my car, work great. Just cleaned and oiled them up today, as a matter of fact.
  8. Ok, thanks everyone for the replies. Does my latch look like the correct latch, other than missing the spring loaded piece on the frame? I am trying to figure out where the spring-loaded piece goes. Anyone have a picture?
  9. Ok, stupid question on my part, but what does this part do? I do not have either one on my doors and my doors seem to close fine. Here is the configuration of my doors (see pics). I had the car stripped and painted a few years back, don't know if I ever had those parts since I have owned it.
  10. I agree with Dave, this should be no problem. I am thinking the tallight cover panel is still in place and causing the problem. Need to remove the taillight panel and it goes right in.
  11. Stephen, here is a website for the "snubber" (L bracket): http://www.v8-240z.com/. David sells the bracket for $20 delivered, but you can make one yourself. He says to take out the diff mount insulator and the diff crossmember to properly install. I have a 90 degree drill that allowed me to reach the appropriate areas without removing those parts. Bought the 2"x 2" L bracket at Home Depot. Followed the threading instructions off the website.
  12. Motorsport Auto has a set you can buy.
  13. I did the simple "L" bracket that attaches to the diff mount insulator and goes under the crossmember to hold the diff/driveshaft down if torque applied to it, seems to work just fine for my purposes. I attached it to the back, but can be atached to the front of the insulator as well. Was a simple install that did not require the removal of anything!
  14. Maybe dumb question ... My 70Z has an L28 engine with E12-80 electronic ignition added, does this affect what the timing specs should be? Do I use the timing info for an early L24 engine, or use the timing specs for a later L28 engine? Again, probably stupid question, but what a great place to ask! Don't have the FSM yet for my car, but will be ordering the CD shortly from Nissan! PLEASE DISREGARD - already have answer!!
  15. Yes, Arne, that looks like the easiest solution to the problem. I am going to see if I can get this piece fabricated, probably cheaper than the $100 for the strap, bracket, etc, from Nissan!
  16. So, if I have the 83 280zx 5 speed and matching R200 diff installed, using a later (72 to 78) diff strap and bracket will still not align correctly with the mounting holes for the diff strap bracket? I understand the 70 to 71 bracket will be too far forward, but was hoping the later version would be more offset and allow the strap to reach over the diff, is that incorrect? Assuming I cannot use the early or later bracket, I guess I will have to create an alternative, as is mentioned above, bummer!!
  17. Found a simnple solution (I believe) for my problem. There is no diff limiting strap over the front nose of the diff! When I had the 83 5 speed tranny and R200 diff installed, the diif strap was removed (probably because the 70 brackets did not work). Am ordering the later model diff strap bracket, strap, etc, from Nissan and this should resolve the problem. Will replace the diff mount insulator at the same time. Keep your fingers crossed!
  18. Derek, I got an e-mail from Gregg, President of Dezert Z Association, the local Z club, in response to the exact same question. Here is his response: "We at Desert Z are still trying to find honest, competant mechanics for our early Z's. Some members use Toyo Motors near 28th Street/Bell and other have mentioned IMM Auto Service and Arizona Import Specialists, both located in Tempe. AZ Import is owned by a former Nissan Master Tech." Hope this helps! Will miss Gary and Danny at Spanky's!!
  19. I had my mechanic install an 83 280zx 5 speed tranny (3.90) and an R200 diff out of the same car into my 70 Z. I believe the driveshaft was from the same car (driveshaft has 83 280zx written on it in marker). The driveshaft measures 22 3/4" from center of u-joint to center of u-joint at other end (as best as I can measure). I used a diagram from Arne to find measuring points (see below). I want to make sure that I have the correct driveshaft in my car. The reason I am concerned is that I am getting a large bang/clunk when hard accelerating in 1st gear, and it is possible the spline end could be hitting the tranny upon high torque (?), thus making the noise. Any thoughts? Again, thanks Arne for your input!
  20. Great find! How do you like the louvers? Am looking at getting some for my Z to cover the scratchs/gouges in my original clear hatch window. Are they secured under the window seal?
  21. Thanks, Arne, appreciate the link. The Xenon website does not have the 70 or 71 FSM, so this is a good substitute!
