Jim you raise an issue I had not even thought of. I could swear that I did not drop it in the driveway when pulling the pulley. I just reinstalled the front cover and water pump. The motor is not out of the vehicle. If the key dropped it would have slipped down the inside of the front cover into the oil pan? How would I do an inspection? pull the front cover back off and try and get a magnet inserted down the space between the front of the block and the pan? The woodruff key should be magnetic, right? Would it do any damage if I left it in the pan? This all started because of a broken bolt on my water pump. Oh woe is me

Thanks guys. I checked with the local Nissan dealer and he has one in stock. Thanks for the part number Stephen, that helped alot! All my learning experiences seem to be "interesting" ZSaint. Funny how it works that way...

I am now in the process of putting the front pulley back on. I notice that there is a keyway on both the pulley and the crank. But I looked in the box where I placed the pulley after removal and found no key. Here's a really dumb question, is there supposed to be a key installed, and if so, since it has mysteriously vanished, where would I get one?:stupid:
  4. Hey DK. You were close, $26,000. When you also place a monetary value of time saved per week (5 hours) while in the carpool lane, maintenance on the Caddy, replacement 20inch tires, (at least two sets) the $3200 IRS hybrid tax credit, I about break even at $3.50 a gallon. That is considering no battery replacement and zero dollars for trade-in value after five years. I just drove by Chevron and it was $3.56 for premiuim. Texaco had it at $3.53. The Prius is disposable. I'll be able to keep the SUV to tow the Z for many more years now.
  5. I guess I went to the extreme to combat high fuel prices. My daily driver was an Escalade which is now parked in the driveway. I drive 90 miles roud trip to work and it was costing me $20 daily. I purchased a Toyota Prius. Now I am paying $5 a day and getting 48.9 MPG. I am gambling that fuel prices will increase. Hopefully the hybrid will save me money in the long run. It already saves me time being able to jump into the carpool lanes by myself.

My Z has the same build date ZSaint. I'll look tomorrow morning for you and see if I can locate the connector for you and report back.

Be very careful in what you do. In CAlifornia, a bailors right of possession is protected under the law. You are a bailee. You will need to get a lawyer. In California you cannot rent a Sheriff as Carl has suggested, until you get a court order. You can not use small claims either as small claims only deals in monetary awards, so you will need to file any actual suit, for whatever creative causes the attroney can argue. Channel 7 Eyewitness news has a consumer hotline. You may be able to contact them and have them go out and attempt to contact the owner. This may be enough to get your car back. Keep in mind this is now a civil action, so the police will not assist you. What a lowdown piece of work this guy is.

Mine's a 71 that is also currently down. Been in the family since new. Refreshing the brakes and fule system currently and hoping to have it up by the middle of summer. I've never driven a Z but sure can't wait to drive mine soon! From what ya'll have said, it is an experince enjoyed by few!

I am thinking of pulling the smog pump and keeping it in a box. Or just leaving the belt off. I wonder if I leave the belt off will I have to plug anything on the manifold, or will it be fine untouched?
  10. rtaylor posted a post in a topic in Open Discussions
I did mean jmark, sorry about that. Yes, my car does have the smog pump and it sits directly below the AC Compressor.

My setup looks just like Kmacks, and thanks for the picture. Your engine compartment looks great! I noticed the problem with the air cleaner as well. Due to the tight fit the fron lip of the air cleaner is damaged on my ride. I'll have to get that fixed at some time as well. I am going to take your suggestion on using ARA Stephen They're close and from what you have said knowledgeable. I want to keep the car as period correct as possible. Thanks for the advice as well Moonpup. After I get this done I'll let ya'll know how it turned out.

I am not sure what brand the compressor is. I will take a look and post a picture tomorrow. It is a huge thing with a big recessed flat top on it.

Thanks for all the positive responses! I reread my post and found way too many spelling errors, gotta remember to spel chek from here on out. I'll take the AC compressor over to ARA Stephen. The original dealer sure picked a strange side to mount that compressor on, that being the drivers side. Seems like there is alot more room on the passenger side. The tires are indeed Bridgestones, but like Carl has mention they are the 175HR14s. The wheels are Appliance judging from the A on the caps. Thanks for the tips Carl. If I can get away with just cleaning the carbs out, no reason to spend $600 at Ztherapy. I'll try that first. Finally the Inland Empire (and for those of you that watch the OC also refered to as the 909) that I refer to stretches from Pomona to San Bernardino and down to Riverside.

I took all of the suggestions and used my impact on the front bolt and it came off smoothly. Then I used a pulley puller and the pulley came off smoothly as well. Next, the distributor was pulled and this weekend I'll pull the oil pump which will then allow me to get the darn front cover off. What alot of work just to fix a broken bolt, but now I have a better understanding of the componets that sit in front of the block.

Well, Southern CAlifornia weather has no allowed me to strat refreshing my Z. It has 24,000 miles and my Faher-in-law purchased it new, and has been in his garage for MANY years. The tags on the plate are from 1982. Thought that I would post some pictures for all to see. At least the car does not need Mull to rebuild it. You can't detail from the photo, but the dealer installed wheels have the original Bridgestone tires. Think that I am going to remove the tires and reinstall them on the original steel wheels sitting in my shed. Getting ready to pull the carbs and send them to Z Therapy. I had hoped to have the car running for the MSA weekend, but doubt it now. The fuel tank is at the shop being boiled and then I plan to POR the inside. There was rust in the gas when I drained the tank, so I think this is a prudent idea. I have been reading all the posts by ya'll for sometime now, and even though this is my first attempt on working on a Z, I feel that I have an army of help available. If i don't visit this site daily, i feel that I go thought DTs. It has a dealer installed AC setup, but I need to have the compressor rebuilt and I am trying to locate a good shop in the Inland Empire to do this. Anyone have a referral for me? Thanks guys and

I just bound with Haggerty for a $159 annual premium. I was allowed 2500 miles per year. Since my car is not a daily driver the coverage works for me. The agreed value is $15,000. I read the policy cover to cover and it appears comprehensive enough. If any one wishes to read a Haggerty policy, good bedside light reading, PM me and i will send you a PDF version of the policy.

I believe it has dealer installed AC considering the build date. (However I have all the original Datsun owners manuals and one of them is for AC, surprisingly enough.)There are two pulleys; one with two groves, the other has one. The outer pulley has 2 bolts that connect it to the inner pulley. When I removed the outer two bolts that pulley then spinned freely but would not come off. I need to get my head down there so I can see what is going on. I purchased a front pulley puller. Got the AC cooler off last night so I could try the impact on the main bolt, but ran out of time to do anything else, what with my one year old demanding attention. Next weekend I will get back to it...

Daniel. I was installing a new water pump and snapped the head of the long bottom bolt. I have the radiator pulled now. Next I have to pull the air conditioner assembly to gain access. I guess I could just loosen the cooler. I am planning on drilling out the broken bolt and using an ez out to get the broken bolt out. I need to pull the front cover off the engine as the bolt is broken behind the front cover. I have an air impact wrench, will that work? I would hate to pull the motor just to fix that broken bolt. The ideas of using the starter after disconnecting the coil sounds promising. This car has not been started in 10 years...With the semi warm southern california sun I have a lot ahead of me... Thanks for all of the input. I'll let ya'll know how this turns out

I searched past threads and could find nothing about how to remove the front pulley while the motor is still in the car. I was thinking about using a chain wrench wrapped around the pulley and let the tension of the wrench against the garage floor act as a brake, but I don't know if that will damage the pulley. Are the treads on the crank the normal counter clockwise to remove? Any help will be great guys. This should be easy but it has me stymied.
  20. Adam. I am inthe process of having mine glass beaded as well and want to coat it with clear as you have done. What type of clear paint did you use that will withstand the engine heat? Thanks

Well, there is a lot of different products out there it seems. I most probably now will get a non-petroleum based solution. Didn't think of the odor emitted by a petroleum based product. Since I share the garage with my wife, that is where our washer and dryer is located, she may not be pleased with the aroma. I was just using some spray carb cleaner last weekend and she thought the place would erupt in flames when she started the gas dryer. Better to live in harmony I think... Thanks for all of the responses.

Hey guys. I have started stripping my engine and engine bay down to clean the 35 years of grime. I am planning on buying an inexpensive parts washer from Harbor Freight tools, about $80 for a 40GPH model. I am not too thrilled with Harbor Freight, but I can't see investing big bucks on such a simple tool. In my research I find there are two types of cleaning solutions: aqueous or petroleum based solvents. As much as I can appreciate the PC of being green (I just purchased a Prius as my daily driver), I wonder how well an aqueous solution will clean the accumulated grime. Can anyone share some of their experinece with the two products? And is there a particular brand of cleaning solution that works better than others? Thanks for the input.
  23. This will be my first Z event. I picked up my Z late last year. I am looking forward to meeting other members of the club. I only have to come from Pomona, so it won't be a long drive. The Z hasn't been started in eight years, so I better get moving on getting it up and running.

Frank Beard actually owns a real GTO. Worth about $7m. This variant is overpriced. Most modified GTO's are based on the GTE chassis. Somebody will be paying for Breard's notoriety.
  25. Dave, I am interested in one as well. I plan to have my dash recovered this summer and will probably need one. Thanks
