  1. Wow, I don't check the thread for 2 days and apparently I missed a lot! :-D McKrack - Yes, I did ask for opinions so I'll take what comes. Don't worry, you didn't ruin it for me. You like my car but not the mirrors. You didn't say they detract from your liking the car, so I guess it's safe to say they don't "ruin" it for you... I like them; I don't think they distract the eye, they're a subtle addition. To me, the pitted old mirror was more of a negative... Yellazed - Yes, it might be nice if they were a little more forward, but I'm not about to do all my body and paint work all over again to accomplish that . If someone was putting these on an unfinished car, that's another story. In deciding on placement though, I'd be careful not to get too close to the base of the A-pillar - 1) balance: that's a lot of chrome for one spot, and 2) they might resemble cop-car spotlights too much in that location :-D Your Photochop doesn't look 1 or 2 could be the case because of the angle of original photo, but at a less flattering angle, who knows... kray-z-1 - They're chromed metal. The mirror themselves hodl their position well. You can adjust how "tight" you want them to be. dade 280 - Possibly, but that could get tricky as they are slightly convex. Coastguard Z - That's cool, again: I asked for opinions :-D I've basically asked "what do you think of my mirrors on my car". If I has asked "how do you think my car looks", not drawing attention to the mirrors, I have a feeling I wouldn't get too many negative comments about the mirrors themselves. I didn't post before-and-after photos for the side stripes, and I suspect I would've gotten comments going both ways there was well. Personally, I think the black stripes on the silver car really "set off" the wheel/tire combo Yeah, we should meet up sometime. Actually, I think I met you at my club's show in Syracuse right after you got your car. It was probably 4 years ago, the summer before I started on my re-paint process. WingZr0 - Upside down? I guess you're referring to a photo in someone else's post that got taken down? Anyway, the tires, if I remember correctly, are 225-60-14's, the wheels are 7" wide. I couldn't drive her today though, so I'd have to check later to make sure... I've also got Tokico HP struts and springs, so she's also a little lower than "stock".... Exdamyankee - Thanks, and good luck w/your car!
  2. Mike, I don't know how I missed that Review, but I did. Guess it didn't come up in my Search on "bullet mirror" last weekend when I was installing the DS one and looking for tips on where exactly to mount it, need for more holes, etc. Got a lot of hits on fender-mount mirrors though . Yes, I'll add my comments and a link as soon as I figure out about mounting the PS one
  3. Mike - good point, I'll have to check this by sitting in my passenger seat and trying to get a good look out the mirror on the driver's side... Ron - I think MSA's site says these Bullet II's are "smaller" than the originals, but I'll measure them anyway and get back to ya. I found a similar mirror here: http://www.finishlineaccessories.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=42&products_id=191 They sell seperate flat and convex versions with a 3-1/4" mirror. The mirror and "bullet" look the same as the MSA ones I have, but the base is slightly different.... Bo - thanks, but FYI they were painted black by the wheel mfg. They're probably not the same wheel that you have (though I'm sure pretty much any turbine style wheel would look good w/ the paint). I've never seen another pair of 'em anywhere, they're a story in their own right
  4. Thanks! Yeah, the idea/need for a passenger-side mirror is what got me to this point... I had seen the new bullet mirrors in the MSA catalog, and I thought that might be a nice subtle 70's-look mod that would get me my 2nd mirror. I guess I could've gone with a another stock mirror for the PS and rotated the mirror 180 degrees, but my original DS mirror is pitted and the glass rattles anyway, so I would've wanted to buy 2 new ones at almost $100 a pop  So yea, I think I like this option better
  5. Got a set of these for my birthday and put one on the driver's side to make sure they'll be OK to drive with - the mirror is smaller and lower than stock - and I'm pretty happy with it. The mirror seems to be slightly convex which helps visibility. I had to drill a new hole to be able to mount it, but in a place where I could revert to "stock" and still cover the new hole. Once I drill holes in the passenger side though, there's no turning back! First 3 are with the new mirror, 4th photo is w/the stock mirror So waddya think???

If you've already primed/protected that metal with anything, or done you own rust repair, most body/paint shops won't want to touch it because if anything goes wrong down the road with how their paint job reacts with your work underneath it, it's not their fault, but you're still gonna be P.O.'d at them. That may be the real reason you're friend/neighbor said no: he probably values your goodwill more than the potential profit. Don't be afraid to do the paint yourself though. I never painted a car before and I painted my silver BC/CC job. Check my gallery for pics of the whole process. Check out autobodystore.com, they have lots of how-to info for DIY-ers, and good prices on materials, guns, etc., and a very active/helpful community. I used a portable Campbell-Hausfield compressor that had a 30-gallon tank and put out ~11 CFM set for my Devilbiss HVLP gun. Kept up with my gun when running just fine :-) I had a homemade PVC positive pressure booth, a cast iron pipe hooked up to the compressor that went up, across the wall, and down (with 2 drain valves in it) into a Devilbiss wall filter, and used "last chance" ball-type filters on my gun for every spraying session. I had zero water or oil issues in my paint. I had to special-order the compressor (~$275) but got a great deal through CH's vendor site on Tracotr Supply's site. It was worth it because I had all the air I needed without a giant 80-gallon compressor, and I can move it into a corner when not using it. Bottom line: do your homework, do your prepwork, and move your gun like a robot. "Setting up the gun" is easy once you know what you're looking for. My Devilbiss came with great instructions on how to do it. And after your CC is cured for a day or two, you can get to work with nib files and run blockers and sandpaper and give your car a beatiful shine.
  7. Wow. I'm jealous of all those beatiful parts! Looks like you had a great car to start your project with, very clean... Good luck to you! -Ken

Try checking the backing plate that the shoes slide back and forth on. It may be dirty, rusty, or maybe just not lubed where the shoes contact it and slide. If lube doesn't solve the problem, take the shoes out, use a wire brush to clean those contact areas and get them smoother, and paint w/ epoxy paint. After its all cured, lube those points and reinstall the hardware and shoes :-)

Yep, I have a '72 front bumper on my '73. You just need to get the pre-73 mounts, which are still available new (got mine from MSA). There's no drilling required as the '73 still had the mounting points for the "old" bumper intact.

I was looking for slotted mags when I came across these on e-bay 4 years ago. They had been purchased for use on a 280Z in the 70's but were never used. The center caps were still in pastic bags. I've seen similar wheels on Z's, but never exactly the same.
