Wow! She's a beauty - good luck with her!

I get the same thing. What I do is slow the car in gear, until the engine is just under 1K RPM, then clutch. That usually does the trick. I agree it's annoying. My Jag does the same thing at times, and it's either something in the carbs or throttle shafts as Bruce says.

Jacques is my twin - it's scary how much we look alike, my wife and kids crack up. Right down to the posture. In fact, when we went to the Canadian GP a few years back, I was curious as to why people pointed at me and called me Jacques! I never thought I looked like him until that day in Montreal. I am a lifelong fan of Gilles Villeneuve (Jacques dad), but never took to Jacques until recently. I was really bummed for him - he seems genuine and he's good looking (since he looks like me, hehe)...get 'em next year JV!!!

If you're giving away a Z31, I'll take it I actually like them, and you can hot rod the crap outta them...I have too many projects though

They lost it in the pits - Peugeots spent more than 9:00 minutes longer than did Audi, yet finished ~3:00 behind - Minassian's choice of tires near the 50:00 mark was odd too...

You should do some more research. Hydrogen isn't the answer - it still takes more to refine than you get out of it, oil is still better and much more stable. Can't argue the cost as much, since oil is getting increasingly expensive, but Hydrogen ain't cheap. Solar???? Give me a break - that's akin to your flying cars. Photovoltaics aren't small enough and you can't store enough energy to power a vehicle. You aren't trying to solve the problem of expensive gas. You are trying to solve the problem of providing clean energy (to power homes, factories...everything) without chance of depletion. If the rest of the world thinks fusion is like a flying car, then we are in trouble. Fusion is as real as any other renewable source, and suffers many of the same issues (e.g., reactors too big and expensive to harness) but it solves all the other problems the other alternative fuels have (it's infinite). It requires a plan and investment, something that is happening, but not at a fast enough clip. This is not theoretical, it's proven to work, albeit not at anything reasonable to power even an LED. Remember, people laughed at the idea of a personal computer, let alone one that's as big as a watch. They poo-poohed the idea of putting men on the moon. They mock fusion much the same, but it's the only long-term answer.

You couldn't possibly grow enough corn and distill ethanol fast enough to meet the growing fuel consumption. Nuclear is the only repeatable, replenishable fuel source, no one wants to face that reality...especially fusion (which I posted in a different thread). Ethanol is a sham - it's conceptually a great idea, but it's not the answer. I do agree that we continue to fund rogue states by purchasing oil, but we also purchase oil from Canada, not exactly a rogue. If you don't like importing foreign oil, then speak to your governmental reps about opening some new refineries in the US and doing some exploration / drilling within our boundaries. Meanwhile, the media makes you believe that there's a "shortage" of oil - scarcity economics at its best. Clearly, OPEC and others aren't stupid, they'll pump exactly what they need to, but for now there's enough for the near future while we figure out how to shrink fusion reactors small enough to power vehicles. Everything has a finite lifecycle, but the nearest you'll get to solving this "problem" is nuclear. Everything beyond that (other than oil) is not going to happen. PS - The Indy 500 runs ethanol as a marketing ploy - since it's topical, it's a way to attract needed sponsors that American open-wheel racing has been missing since the split. Otherwise, methanol (which they've run traditionally) works just as well.

Yep, that might be the way I go...it's easier for me and gets me something...we'll see

Julio, Excellent! I think the engine should be awesome. I am always debating what to do. Since the head is where you'll primarily derive the power, I am thinking out loud what could be done leaving the bottom end, but adding a nice modded head. As I referred to the Classic Motorsport article, they have stock stroke/bore, so it can be done. It didn't detail how they increased compression, whether it was domed pistons or modification to the combustion chamber/shaving. I want to keep numbers matching. I don't want to pull the engine. I can pull the head and send out, so I am curious what that could possibly yield. Since I already have a 5-spd and a better final drive, this could be a nice ride. Not expecting to blow off Vettes, or WRXs, but something that was peppier and ran nice. I'd even consider ditching the E88 since that has no serial numbers. I once posed the question whether it was worthwhile putting in a L26 crank / rods and farming out the head work and no one went for it. But if you do the budget, it seems to be worth it to me - the L26 crank/rods should be good for an additional 10 hp, and the head a few more...much cheaper than pulling the engine, shipping, getting it back, and re-installing... Rich

Julio, Did you ever follow through on plans to have Rebello do your work? I am back around on this kick - I too want to keep my engine numbers matching, and I am pretty certain I need some engine work. There is some oil leaking around the head and my performance is brisk, but not great. I don't have the time, money or wherewithal to pull my engine, but I could remove my head and send out for work. That's largely driving this, and a $1,500 for head work by someone reputable is better value to me than taking it to a local, non-Z specific shop. I was keenly interested in the Classic Motorsports article that showed a Balanced/Sunbelt engine putting close to 200 crank HP with stock bore/stroke. Now, if I don't do (or need) any bottom end work, I have to believe that sending the head to someone like Rebello or Sunbelt is going to yield something. FWIW, I have an E88, allegedly with an aftermarket cam (Crower). Grind unknown, but the car doesn't sound any different at idle than I'd suspect, so it must be mild at best.

I use regular - 87-88 octane, no problems. Don't know if that will cause any issues, but it's been running fine.

Why the Z may be the perfect car for the next 10 years

Go240Zags, I agree - nuclear today has a problem and that is waste that has an enormous "half life". That's why I mentioned FUSION. It's completely different, the waste made is minimal, and depending on process can be practically non-existent. The problem is that fusion as a viable energy source is not possible today as reactors are too large and can barely make enough energy. So while it's not theoretical, it does need maturation to get to a point of viability. If properly attended to, we could have fusion reactors in 20-30 years that would produce an infinite and safe energy source. Of course, if everyone motorcycled, that would help! I love your solution, having owned many a motorcycle (and still my old Honda). To support your effort, I recently read that sales of scooters (Vespas and what not) are up almost 25% in the US, largely attributed to their fuel economy. -
I would love a replica BRE 510 for my collection. He'll, I'd love a real one if I could afford it. Welcome! One of our distinguished members, Diseazd, also has an awesome 510 in his collection, so don't feel like an outsider.

Well...I have some other toys that vie for my attention. But, I've always had a soft spot for Z's as I owned one as a kid. The real issue is that it requires work, probably as much $$ wise as my Jaguar, and the Jag is worth significantly more. Plan is to keep it, but time will tell! -
So it would seem that the Magnaflow muffler fixed the issue. I am willing to give that a try - should I do it, I will let you all know, the fumes in my car make it a little less enjoyable :|

Why the Z may be the perfect car for the next 10 years

Well if you consider the jobs it will bring and investment in the community, I laud the Governor. Here in NJ, we have Nero fiddling while Rome burns. Taxes are high, and the high paying jobs are moving out. If you are in Telecom, like me, it's a wasteland...I expect I'll be working and/or moving out of State in due time! Oh well, back to Z's. Just checked out some nice YouTube vids that had me pumped. Every time I think of selling my Z, the emotion pulls me back! -

Correct! However, today's reactors are fission, which produce radioactive by-products. The answer, is FUSION, of which the by product is minimal compared to fission (w/ fusion, you are fusing atomic nuclei, rather than splitting as in fission). The problem with fusion is the reactors are huge and can barely create energy long enough to turn even a single revolution on a motor. Huh? Nuclear is INFINITE!!! It's the only repeatable, replenishable energy source known to man. I agree, the cost is astronomical, but it's NEEDED. To date, there are only a few fusion reactors - one in Princeton, NJ and one being built in Paris that I recall. In time, and with investment, we can shrink the size of a fusion reactor significantly enough to generate energy. Consider computers 50 years ago, then compare to today. They are way more powerful and much smaller/cheaper. Fusion reactors would follow a similar paradigm given the proper focus and investment. All other alternative fuel sources are a sham - you will consume more energy to extract/convert than you would just using oil (there's a reason that we consume so much oil...it's the best return on "cost"). Also, consider what Carl mentioned - do not assume that the US, with 300 million people consumes more than China and India, which is 2.4 BILLION+ people combined! Our increasing dependence on foreign oil, and political jockeying which blocks us from drilling and/or opening a refinery in the last 30 years is causing much of the "scarcity economics" that is driving energy prices up for us. Many people died for our right to consume large quantities of food and live in McMansions. I do not think it's right for us to consume in disproportion, since many live in poverty, but America does more to help others than the media would have you believe - both private citizens and public servants. Never forget those who performed the ultimate sacrifice so that we may have life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. -
If you've never browsed the Jalopnik site, do so - it's pretty funny. I recently saw two 240Z articles, the follow-up posts are neat: http://jalopnik.com/381927/the-denver-iron-keeps-coming-early-datsun-240z http://jalopnik.com/386439/1980s-new-jersey-time-capsule-19k+mile-datsun-240z-could-be-yours The second post is really a trip, but the first one shows how much appreciation there is for older Z's...

Looks great - and a reasonable price too! Those mini-lites look fantastic, I would swap my slotted mags for those in a minute, but funds prevent that My car is a weekender too, has some dings and some very minor rust. $1,400.00 for a decent paint job and fix of dings, etc. is, as Arne says, a bargain! Only issue is that each Maaco, being independent, is different, so I'd expect differing levels of quality. I thought of going Weasel's route of the High School shop class or Vocation school, but I am too lazy to flesh that out. I better get Maaco!!!

Those headlamps are hideous...same as the ridiculous looking Maxima. I thought the silly designs were going to go once Hirshberg retired...all I can say is MEH!

I have boatloads of fumes - I smell like them when I get out of my car...I suspect part of it is what KTM suggests - my car needs to be worked as I am burning some oil. But I can see how Mike's suggestion would help - the tailpipe is really close to the back end and if the aero isn't kosher on the back end, it pretty much recirculates back into the cabin. I never thought to leave the windows closed, perhaps that's part of my problem?

I used McNutt (www.mcnutttransport.com) - they were cheap and friendly. One thing you should note, they don't necessarily used closed trailers and they rely on a network of regional shippers, but everything is insured and I had no problems scheduling or receiving my 240Z. McNutt was at least 50% cheaper than any other service I looked at (FedEx, Intercity, etc.)

Red Bank? I am your virtual neighbor - in Freehold! We have a local Cruise Night every 3rd Thursday of the summer months. Haven't had my Z there yet, but if you go, perhaps we'll bump into each other. Had my car out the other day, lot's of "nice car!" from kids and adults alike. She's not in the best of shape, but it's no scrap heap either, so I had fun with it. I agree - there's hardly many of these cars around here anymore - certainly the climate and hazards (salt, traffic, etc) impacted it greatly. I'd love to do something at Old Bridge Twp. Raceway Park - they have import nights, as well as Buick, Ford, and Chevy events...why not a Z event? FWIW

Wow - that's a nice looking car, don't see many like that in these parts
