  1. If you plan on shaving the head, you must shim the cam towers or there will be slack in the timing chain. I am not an expert on this, but I think .080" is about the max you'll be able to go. See here for details: http://www.datsunzgarage.com/
  2. Sounds silly, I know - but that thing was wedged in there good! Maybe it was the shock of seeing a sponge that made it so difficult. There are some creative people in this world, never saw that sort of "install" before!
  3. That's what I need! It's behind the shifter, but ahead of the ashtray on the '72. You have any NOS units left to spare?
  4. Wow, I did not know that! We're the "D" hubcaps stamped steel as well? No wonder they run $500+!
  5. All: Yep, appreciate this immensely! I just love the look of the original stereo, so this will be nice. Dave - I'll get those wire colors for you tomorrow. Need to kick back and have a glass of wine - it was a good amount of work wrestling the used sponge and aftermarket radio out!
  6. The car had a modern, aftermarket POS. I pulled that, but of course all the original wiring was chopped up to wire the thing in. Dave - this is a BIG help, because you've now helped me identify some of the wires. I see the black is ground, I've found the speakers. Should be able to start matching the rest. I do see one thing that looks like it has an inline fuse...not sure of the wire color, I have to check that. Any idea what that is?
  7. Thanks guys, I'll check with Les on the paint. Mike - when you say they rust - aren't they plastic? I believe there is a retaining right that goes around the edge, but what else would rust? I am getting these for a song - $20 for a set. I've seen them, they look good, so it's worth the risk. Just want to understand what I might be facing if I try to refresh them.
  8. Why? Clearly, there's a market for people that don't want to swap out their 2.4L but want more power. The 2.7L is a way to do that. He pointed out that he couldn't carry the extra engine around as he gets transferred periodically. While I understand the logic, I think there's too many that advise to "swap it for an L28". It's not within everyone's capability to do it - I know I can't, but I know I can swap a head out pretty easily (I've done it). Again, there's a market and value for a builder that can provide a boost in HP to those that can only swap out a head. Classic Motorsports showed this with the 240Z they had Sunbelt work on. 200HP (assuming this is crank HP) is pretty darn good for mainly headwork. That's the way I will certainly go as I am limited in funds and ability. FWIW
  9. Sorry for all the "help me" posts, but I am finally getting some needed work done on my '72. There was an aftermarket air conditioning unit installed (poorly btw) on the center console where the "embellishment panel" (as termed by the Haynes manual" resided. This "embellishment panel" is between the shfter and the ash tray, and it must be removable because it's not on my car. Anyone have one or know where I could obtain this piece? Thanks in advance. Rich
  10. I have a chance to acquire some original teardrop hubcaps for my '72 240Z. They are mildly worn, but in good shape. One thing I've noticed is that the ads I look at show the hubs in different hues - dark gray and a lighter, almost silver color. Were multiple colors offered for the Z? If so, was there a color scheme followed (e.g., red cars got the dark gray)? Thanks - trying to get the car to be "correct" - appreciate the help! Rich
  11. I have finally removed the aberration of an aftermarket stereo the PO of my '72 had installed. Just to give you an idea of how bad the install was, the radio was shimmed with a dried sponge and some foam. It wasn't screwed in at all!!! Any way, I got it removed, but I have to rewire the original stereo. **** WARNING - ELECTRICAL MORON ALERT! ***** Unfortunately, I failed Electrical 101 - I don't really know how to read a schematic, but I can "connect red wire to red / white wire" etc. Does anyone have details of what wire goes where in a '72 240Z? I see 2 pairs of wires coming from the back under the console (I believe green and green/blue and gray and gray/blue) that I believe are the speakers. I also think the "coaxial" style cable is for the antenna. I just don't know how to wire the rest up. Any help here is appreciated!
  12. CoastGuard - you ever contact Sunbelt or Rebello on this project?
  13. Same with mine. I just chalked it up to compressed cushion, because my seats are hell on my back (no lower back support at all)!
  14. Agreed - if it's a one owner car (which was stated in the ad, but the claimed # of years owned didn't match up), you have a good basis point. Assuming it's not rusted underneath, then you surely have to budget for another repaint. Can't believe that the customer repaint either a) matches the OEM and/or hasn't faded again - not to mention if the adhesive doesn't come off easy. Also, should point out that this is priced at $6,250 obo. California car, not a bad deal at least from the pics. Note - there's also a Picasa page with pics of the undercarriage and the battery tray, etc. Some peeling on the vinyl roof, but the car looks pretty good.
  15. +1 - I don't think it's a $5,000 car. My 240Z is in similar to better shape, on the East Coast, and I paid almost $2K less. FWIW.
  16. Here's an interesting 240Z with a vinyl top. If you can get past the top, $6,250 obo doesn't look like a terrible deal: http://bringatrailer.com/2009/01/07/1-owner-survivor-blue-plate-1971-datsun-240z/#more-1460 Never saw this dealer-installed option...I can guess why it wasn't too popular:p
  17. Right - need pics. I still think $6,500 is a lot for a '76 280Z, but it depends on what shape it's in. One more thing - Ben Franklin said nothing is certain but death and taxes. Add to that rust on a Z - especially one on the East Coast. It may have been in storage for 29 years, but there's rust somewhere on that car. Anything short of a full-on rotisserie resto is going to have it. FWIW
  18. It's not for me, it's someone else that's looking for it. He likes the idea of having a car that's authentic to the way it was in it's home country. I agree - it's more of a hassle having a RHD car in a country where we drive on the right.
  19. Right - post pics. It may be better to "refresh" rather than "restore". What user Kats is doing / done is going to set you back big bucks. I believe Carl Beck had posted the costs of a refresh on one of his Z's at a different site. Far cheaper and you'll end up with something to be proud of.
  20. I finally landed the original radio for my '72. I may also have an original antenna (it came with the car), but it has a power lead also. Is that correct?
  21. Go check the classifieds - user Duffman has headlight covers for sale.
  22. Carl - much needed and great to hear. I recall reading somewhere that Steve Earle was one that didn't give the 240Z much respect, that needs to change. Getting your car invited to Amelia is fantastic - I am certain you'll get a good amount of interest!
  23. 2 fast - thanks, I was speaking to the guy on ZCAR, but the price from the guy on Hybrid is the same. I figured between $50- 100, so I am in that range. Thanks!
  24. I've found a few - any idea of what a fair price would be? Looking for input as I've never acquired one of these used. All seem about the same price, but curious anyway.
  25. Mike, I believe you are correct. However, the carriage bolts must be welded in, at least on mine they are. I know this because one of the bolts was sheared, and I had to remove the spacers. It was so low, that I ended up reversing the driver's seat with the passenger seat so I could sit higher. I plan on fixing that, but it would require drilling out the sheared carriage bolt. Rich
