Parts, parts, and more parts
Finally got my garage floor cleared of my buddy's 280 parts. Between trashing some 240 stuff that was totally junk and un-sellable, and inventorying (?) the 280 parts, I finally got it all in boxes and either on the shelves or in the attic. If I can just get rid of the grandsons toys, I might be able to get Momma's car back in the garage again.

Bob Sharp
I hope everyone at Z-con11 had the chance to hear Bob Sharp's informative talks. I used to watch him race at Lime Rock, back in the day, but never knew how funny, entertaining and personable he is. It was well worth the 40 min. or so to take a break from detailing and listen to his stories and anecdotes. What a great guy. If the Coastal Z club invited him, I thank them. If he just showed up, well, thanks for coming Bob; it was a pleasure to meet you.

72 Z automatic transmission kickdown switch............
Try contacting Mission Viejo Transmissions in Mission Viejo, Ca. About 2 yrs. ago, they were buying up as many Z auto trannies as they could, for some sort of truck conversion for the Chinese. It's possible they may have parts.

weather report
It has been beautiful here in Central Fla. Starting to get summer-like hot. Only problem is the lovebugs. They are out en-masse. Went to a show last Sun. and they were all over every white and light-color car. Luckily, the cars were parked. When they smash on your front end at speed, the acid in their bodies will literally eat the paint right off your car if you don't clean them off right away. Plus, they stink to high heaven when they die.

ZCON10, My Classic Car on Speed
I was out on Sunday doing mother-in-law things with wifey, and didn't get home till after 11 PM. So I set my alarm for 4 AM today and got up and watched the show. They saved the best for last, Vince. Overall, it was probably the best they could do given the format of the show. After all, the sponsors come first.

ZCON10, My Classic Car on Speed
I spoke with Dennis in the hotel elevator. Let me just say that the heat had totally wilted his moustache. Totally. But he is a gracious guy.

I'm putting a 6 cyl. version of this in my Z.
The Wartsila-Sulzer RTA96-C turbocharged two-stroke diesel engine is the most powerful and most efficient prime-mover in the world today. The Aioi Works of Japan 's Diesel United, Ltd built the first engines and is where some of these pictures were taken. It is available in 6 through 14 cylinder versions, all are inline engines. These engines were designed primarily for very large container ships. Ship owners like a single engine/single propeller design and the new generation of larger container ships needed a bigger engine to propel them. The cylinder bore is just under 38" and the stroke is just over 98". Each cylinder displaces 111,143 cubic inches (1820 liters) and produces 7780 horsepower. Total displacement comes out to 1,556,002 cubic inches (25,480 liters) for the fourteen cylinder version. Some facts on the 14 cylinder version: Total engine weight: 2300 tons (The crankshaft alone weighs 300 tons.) Length: 89 feet Height: 44 feet Maximum power: 108,920 hp at 102 rpm Maximum torque: 5,608,312 lb/ft at 102rpm Fuel consumption at maximum power is 0.278 lbs per hp per hour (Brake Specific Fuel Consumption). Fuel consumption at maximum economy is 0.260 lbs/hp/hour. At maximum economy the engine exceeds 50% thermal efficiency. That is, more than 50% of the energy in the fuel in converted to motion. For comparison, most automotive and small aircraft engines have BSFC figures in the 0.40-0.60 lbs/hp/hr range and 25-30% thermal efficiency range. Even at its most efficient power setting, the big 14 consumes 1,660 gallons of heavy fuel oil per hour.

Hagerty NAZI Gestapo/ Regular Insurance Dolts
My '71 is with an outfit called American Southern Home. It is through the Heacock Insurance Group. Their address is ostensibly in Burns, Tenn., but the I deal mostly with their office in Lakeland, Fl. The owner, Ford Heacock, is a classic car guy and always brings his Ford GT to an annual show in Lakeland. The coverage is more than adequate; they limit my mileage, but they cover the spare parts in my garage in case the house is destroyed. I have valuation based on an appraisal Also get roadside assistance and the annual premium is $250. I have had them for over 19 years and no complaints.

Disaster struck this morning
Had a guy locally that had a roofer fall through his garage ceiling onto his MINT 280 ZX and damage the hood and right fender. The illegal took off and ran, the roofing company didn't settle at all, and I think he's still looking for OEM parts to repair it.

Car Warriors
johnnyt, I agree, but have an amusing story for you. Back in the early '70s, when the Japanese cars were still in their infancy in America, so to speak, a big boss where I worked was a retired Marine, WW II vet, and had plastered his rear bumper with Semper Fie, and various other U.S.M.C. bumper stickers. His car, ? A Toyota sedan. Seemed just a bit ironic.

Car Warriors
Watching this travesty. I am getting physically ill. These clowns have absolutely NO RESPECT for the Z. They should have used a K-car. I just wonder what they do with all the parts they stripped off.

71 240z flywheel removal ?
Yep, gotta take those bolts out. An air impact gun or ratchet is essential unless you have a really secure method of locking the flywheel in position. Cranking with a conventional ratchet will just turn the flywheel. I have done it both ways, and air is the way to go.
