Compression can be determined by either head or pistons but the E31 head has a slightly smaller chamber size than the E88. Later engines (post 240) may have also had dished pistons.
  2. Diamonds, mate, Argyle diamonds. Opals are from South Australia!
  3. Would that little bird be Lindsay Drife at ZCar workshop in Glen Iris? He (curse him!) is busily buying up Zcars, tarting them up and sending them off to Japan in exchange for cheap skylines which he flogs here.
  4. Ooo Cooper/Corbett. I'll have to retire from this discussion as I've obviously led ervyone (myself included) up the garden path!
  5. You're still heck of a lot closer to Melbourne and Sydney than we are...Its just that you have to import your stuff from 'Australia!'

mmmm, so maybe it would be worth putting N42 valves in my E31 head..?

The E88 head as fitted to the 260Z engine has a larger exhaust valve than the E88 fitted to the late 240Zs...at least that's my understanding. Apart from that, it appears the E31 head has slightly different quench characteristics to an E88 and also gives a slightly raised sompression (9.0:1 vs 8.5:1)

OK, I won't tell you! BTW, a pleasant suprise... looked closely at the engine for the first time on the weekend and discovered that it has an E31 head - bonus! The P.O. mentioned tht he had replaced the head and the engine was too grimy to see what type it was when I 1st looked at it. I have the original head (E88) but how about that - an E31 as well!

Well, The Green Machine is now officially a Sandgroper - I just got back from the E.Perth inspection centre where (despite my paranoia) it passed with flying colours. Also picked up my custom plates... If anyone is thinking of applying for 240.DAT, they're gone!

It is yet to go over the pits. Tried to take it out for some new tyres last week but the battery was flat so I charged it up. Then it rained for days and I couldn't bare the thought of it sitting outside. This morning, fine weather..battery too flat to crank it over again! Must have taken the edge off it with all my fiddling with headlights/taillights last night. Soooo, once again its charging up, tomorrow tyres, Friday over the pits. I'm going to treat the inspection as an exploratory exercise to see what needs doing but it should go close to passing. I think they might fail the windscreen which is nicely sandblasted an has a few chips - but inspectors seem to be more reasonable here than in Vic. I'll keep you posted. To answer you question, I've been keeping driving to a minimum, quick trip to golf last Saturday and a brief cruise thru Subi later on...

OK, a REAL dumb question here..! How do I flick between high and low beam? (I'm serious!) The instrument stalk allows me to turn on park and main headlights but I can't move the stalk to flip between high/low beam. Can't see a floor switch, don't have an owner's manual, so I throw myself on your mercy for ridicule and enlightment! Help!

That may be a question for Kats of HS30-H. What was the production line methodolgy? Did they produce 3,4,5 10 or maybe 20 identical cars at a time before changing trim/colour for the next batch?

My thoughts exactly - where are we? I can only think that the prominence/absence of two-wheeled genii is a cyclic thing. Hey, even the Poms had GP champions at one stage! Australia seems to have been in the doldrums since Sir Michael the Doohan had his last major prang. Fingers crossed for Bayliss. Fingers also crossed that they don't reduce the capacity of MotoGP bikes in the name of safety. Apparently the MotoGP machines are faster than F1 cars on the same circuits...more power to them I say!

Mmmmm, well I didn't drive the Nully. That little task fell to TNT transport. My drive was about 15km only!

Given that the other indicators are clear, the nore I look at the car the more I think the orange bumper-mounted ones should come off - I think it would tidy up the appearance of the front of the car... in the short term though, I'll just live with it until mutual trust and understanding has been formed between us ...! BTW, my wife has named tha car 'Wasabi' (what's green and comes from Japan?) Maybe that should be 'Wazabi!'

Yeeesss... I've heard various theorieson the subject of those bumper-mounted blinkers. One is that they were standard fitment to all later-model 240Zs in Australia. Another is that the car may have been a UK-spec model diverted to Australia...? Requires a bit of Sherlocking methinks!

The seats have been retrimed once in their life and are overdue for it again. The carpets are tatty, the dash and console cracked. Fortunately, the tan headlining, door trims and vinyl diamond pattern around the rear strut towers is all complete and untorn. The tan plastic trim in the hatch area is also complete and not cracked...so I figure that the worn parts are fairly easily repaired or replaced and the remainder just needs detailing.

The colour label on the radiator mount is too faded but I'm sure it is the original colour (matches the engine bay, spare wheel well, under the seats etc). By looking at the colour charts that Alfadog scanned some months (years?) ago I'd say it is 113. It looks like a flat colour in the shade but really brightens up in sunlight!

Well after the longest 3 days ever, my Z finally made it across the Nullabor to Perth yesterday. Am I excited? Oooo yeah! The P.O. even replaced one tyre and steam cleaned the engine before it was collected by the transporter - bonus! I eased it into the garage after an extended scenic drive home and stood there for about half an hour just looking at it. Tried to leave the garage about 3 times to go inside but couldn't get out the door - had to keep turning back to look! Here it is:
