Fuel injector Prob. 77 280z
, I have the bible on cd and printed form, as well as the 77 FSM. I have read a bunch, and have tested some. I am kinda on new ground in many ways, but particularly in the throwing $ and parts at it vs. testing out everthing battle. I have always been the latter, but now with two young childern...one only about 7 weeks old, I have lest time to test, less cash to throw, and have to wiegh which I do at what junction, So far I have done a bit of each, and unfortunatly the throwing cash part hasn't been very sucessful, and the testing keeps leading me to more questions.. In the end it will get warm enough here to spend a great great deal of time testing stuff, but until them I have to do quick checks, get ideas, form theroies, and act on those things...right now I think what is happening is a supply problem, but will have to wait til Saturday to even get a crack at checking it out Dang responsibility! I will update, and ask more stupid stuff...as long as you guys are still willing to answer them.. Thanks again to all.

um opps I read more..it's not that one..

Fuel injector Prob. 77 280z
you guys are awesome! I take it the tube with the trumpet looking part is when the fuel leaves the tank.....that kinda looks like a great place to clog.

Bob...that is awesome..and is as it will be. You share some great pictures..which for a guy who has spent way too much time breathing exhaust fumes is a good thing. Today was turd for me, and you and Stephen have kept my hope alive, . The fusible link turned out to be something else...that was stupid. There is a short in the Parking Brake switch wiring. I had hooked it up over the weekend, not realizing that the PO had a good reason for unplugging it. Can anyone describe the way the pick up "pipe" lookes inside the tank? Or better yet, anyone got any pictures? Is it just a tube, that allows fuel in the end? Is it a tube with slots cut in it? Does it have a "sock" on it?..I picture it as a pipe with slots..but I don't know why, maybe that just seems easier to clog to me..

Fuel injector Prob. 77 280z
Thanks to all, especially you Stephen, You are what is keeping this fun. Your encouragement for me to use the service manual is appreciated. I do the same thing when people are shade treeing their sea doos. It's great to fix something, but better to understand it. I think the issue of pump pumping vs pump running was a misdirection/ communication on my part. It does run when I trip the shutter, but will not pump fuel....for a while..then does. Last night I did check over the Air flow meter, and I believe it to be sound. I did clean all the contacts, and the connector. BTW I could not get the thing to do it last night, but I didn't drive it either. However, that said overall pressure is down since the last time this happened. It's now running about 30-32, goes down a bit when I rev the engine, then as I let out it rebounds to around 38 for a second..then rests at 30-32 again. It was pushing about 36 before the trouble came back (remember I put 45 trouble free miles on it before it started again.)..I say came back because this is about what it was doing with the old pump...before I wrecked it.. Here is the link to the pump Stephen :http://napaonline.com/masterpages/NOLMaster.aspx?PageId=470&LineCode=BA&PartNumber=1528029&Description=Fuel+Pump+(OE+Electric+In-Line+Type) I think that is a check valve at the end with the electrical hook up, but I only assumed it, I didn't check, and I didn't ask Btw I didn't pay anything near that price...I get a big napa discount, as my shop does $3500-$4000/ mo. in parts with them. (ofcourse being that it's napa, $4000 is two packs of spark plugs, and oil filter, a shop towel and some armour all at Napa ) Anyhow I'm gonna change my fuel filter..again, and clean fule pick up line up a bit, and see if we get anything better. There is no strainer on this pump...though it is made to accept one, and I am looking for one (mine was missing) and it could be it has sucked a bunch of stuff up. we'll see. Thanks againg for so much great advise. If you know who's selling the oem strainers please let me know. How much pressure gets put on the line comming out of the tank...could I put a valve and my glass inline filter the as a temp way to watch what goes through there?

BTW it's not that pump..it's most likely the same aftermarket one avail through NAPA though. What are the problems other have had with thiers? This one is running good, is quiet and did give me some improvement, though it still aint right.

Fuel injector Prob. 77 280z
Steven..I missed you. Any ideas why when it goes into this state of o pressure, the pump won't pump fuel...even though it is running? I think that the Air flow meter is playing a trick, but I can understand why, even if it's the main cause, the pump won't pump for bit (though it's running) when I open the air flow meter shutter manually...The pump runs and runs..but sounds like it has no fuel. I'll take a good look at the air flow meter, but that stuff inside is prolly a bit too exotic for me.

I have a pressure gauge installed between the filter and the regulator. I kinda enjoy being able to monitor it. I wish there was one in the dash. I installed a new regulator (rail) yesterday, and with it new vac hose and line hoses. The new regulator seemed to smooth the engine (though it was pretty smooth already). I am checking the fuel line from tank to pump tonight, but there will be no driving, as there is too much snow on the ground, and This Z will never see it as long as I own it, I truly feel like something is plugging, collapsing, or the like..we'll see. If I clear something out I should see a rise in pressure I would think.

Fuel injector Prob. 77 280z
Thanks, Jeff. It has always started great. I already have runn an entire tank of fuel through the filter, using the long hose after the filter, while making the pump run by holding the air flow sensor shutter open. Worked like a champ. The problem is the car starts great, the thermotime switch does it's job, then the idle slowly comes to 900, and the car runs great...a little low pressure, but running great. As long as I don't stomp it. When I do, the car goes lean, fuel pressure drops, and will not recover..like someone shut down a door in the pump supply line., I let it sit, and I trick the pump into pumping, and finally the pressure comes back up..and we go through the whole thing all over again.. For some reason the pump stops pumping fuel. I think when I punch it, the pressure (due to low volume) can't keep up and it drys the pump out. and then the pump needs a while to re prime...because there is a restriction. That or either the TPS or the AFS are for somereason shutting down the pump, and it uses all the fuel and can't get re primed.. It's a lot of fun. I drove it for an hour and had no trouble...until I romped it..then it started this crap again..

Fuel injector Prob. 77 280z
Hmmm could be I guess, but it has always powerd up when I trip the shutter, and only seems to happen when I really romp the throttle. Could it maybe still be running, but at a lower voltage, causing it to lean to 0? And if it did this, why does the pump activate imediately, only w/o pressure? It truly is like the pump runs dry. I don't know how these aftermarket pumps do with priming, maybe it is for some reason going dry and taking forever to re prime. It's bizzare , I'll check them over real good Bob, it just does'nt feel right. I got my 1977 FSM on cd today..maybe, someplace in the 670+pages is the answer..

Just went out to the garage, opened the air flow shutter.....fuel pump came on..ran for a second..then the pressure came right to 36...then dropped off when I closed the shutter..open the shutter 36..close in 20..open 36..close 20 etc...start it up psi to around 34 while running..and running good?

Fuel injector Prob. 77 280z
Well gents..this baby is killing me. Drove gently for about 25 mi this weekend, and she was good. Stomped it for the final leg of the trip, and then she acted rough. Pulled into the driveway..it started to sputter. I poped the hood and watched my pressure dwindle to nothing..then it died, and the pressur sat on 0 til I drig it in the garage with the riding mower. Then I tripped the air flow shutter, pressure came up and it ran good again. So today I put the new fuel regulator on thinking I was really on to something. Fire up..sounded smooth as ever..went around the block no trouble,,pumched it..saw black smoke,,started running rough..pulled into the driveway...and putt putt putt...watched the pressure go to 0..car died...and never could get pressure. I can hear the pump run, when I trip the air flow shutter..but no pressure..It was still bleeding off to someplace..could an injector hanging up I guess...but I can't figure why it goes to 0 in the middle of a good run. It's killing me..

More important than my Z's
Ronnie. I am am sorry to hear this. I lost a beautiful Golden retriever, and friend. in 2000 to cancer, and a wonderful buddy last june to liver disese. I had both for around 12 years, and maybe had never been so sad . I aint wasy. You both will be in my thoughts. Take your time..prioritys my friend.

disconnected the parking brake indicator light switch and 'viola! The new 80 amp fusible (notice I learned to spell it) link did not get hot...at all, hooked it back up..hot hot hot, so there is a short to find someplace. Voltage was a lot more stable with that link re installed...but as you know one thing leads to another.. the pressure..which has always been stable while the car waited for me to come back..was down to 20 after about 12 hrs..so it's bleeding someplace, and, as you noted earlier..the regulator is my suspect. the pressure is still a bit low...and it's bleeds off at rest..my new one did not come yet:(..but I eagerly await it's arrival.

Fuel injector Prob. 77 280z
Thanks, the only two things I have changed are the fuel pump, and I removed the seats and noticed the plug for the p brake was un hooked, the light still does not come on. I wonder if it was unplugged for a good reason. I could tell the link had been hot before, but it hadn't got hot since I've had it til last night.

okay, I have determined that the fusible link that I am baking goes to the Alternator/ ignition relay...any ideas on what would cause it to bake?

Fuel injector Prob. 77 280z
Got the fuel pump in, but my press. reg. didn't come yet. Runs a bunch better, but still showing 32 on the gauge. Maybe the gauge is not correct. It runs good, but still feels like it's not getting a full load of fuel. But it never once stumbled. So that is progress. I'm chasing an electrical grimlin now. It seems the the fusable link( the one in front) (wire closest to the fender) is overheating. I pulled it off, and nothing happened (except my finger got burnt,) I did notice the voltage fluctuation seemed more profound, when accessories were turned on. Also the lights would become very dim. I cant find my diagram so as of now I don't know if the two are related. I put about 30 miles on it tonight...and went up to 70...it felt great. Thanks again for your help. Any ideas on the f link.... Totally unrelated, but life as I know it changed today.....I bought a freakin' mini van......I think the Z is cool enough to keep me going)

any good ideas on where to find a fuel pump strainer...as was posted earlier...mine was missing..and with all the junk that went throught there when I first started it..??? I'm amazed it wasn't clogged up

Fuel injector Prob. 77 280z
I thought that was the one, btw...the windshield wipers work great! I picked up a fuel pressure regulator today for $77.99, and have a pump comming. Iguess with the fuel system..in the end, it's better to know exactly what you have. It's a bit salty, but after looking at the parts over the weekend, pirce of mind is worth it.

The Check valve...inside the pump? something I notice when I had the outlet "barb" that has the check valve inside it, off was that the check valve didn't line up with the center hole on the outlet side of the barb..I tried to blow in..it sealed, and it opened up when I blew out.

Fuel injector Prob. 77 280z
, I did check the regulator, and the dampner..prior to screwing up the pump. I didn't communicate that well when I said "it all checked out" sept the pressure. That's why I decided to take the pump apart..and sadly Iscrewed something up Sorry for the miscommunication.

Fuel injector Prob. 77 280z
Oh I aint done yet.. I tried real hard all weekend not to get blown up..rog. I figured out that I put the inlet nozzle piece on wrong...so I redid that and thought for sure it would work...but no it still wouldn't prime..the thing is, there was a bit of fuel inside when I opened it up..how much does it take? There reall was not any at the out let, but plenty inside it seemed to me.
