  1. View Advert Datsun FS5W71B Close Ratio 5 Speed Transmission This FS5W71B 5 speed was removed three years ago from a low mileage 1983 280zx with its original engine. The transmission was full of oil and did not leak so the seals were left intact. When drained, the oil was in great condition and the magnetic drain plug had one shiny sliver of metal which appears to be casting flash (item #1 in the drain plug and dime pic) and two chips of magnet (items #2 and #3) stuck to it. These appear to be from the plug magnet itself- as seen in the picture that the edge of the plug magnet is missing a small piece. It shifts smoothly through all forward and reverse gears and has no friction spots or noises as the input shaft is spun by hand or drill in each gear. The input and output shaft gears themselves are also in mint condition. The aluminum case was cleaned with a nylon bristle brush and left in its unpainted original condition. The speedometer cable end is installed to protect the threads in transit. This is the very hard to find 1983 Datsun close-ratio 5 speed transmission that was only installed in the last two years of the 280zx model-1982 and 1983. It fits S110, CA18ET (200SX), L20B, L16, L18, L24, L26, L28 and L28E engines as well as MGB's with the Rivergate conversion. The '82 and '83 models have the great overdrive 0.745 fifth gear which allows for a comfortable cruising RPM even with high rear end gears. I purchased this transmission three years ago for my '71 240z project but my build has taken a different direction and I no longer need it. Here is how to positively identify this transmission model: 1. The oval block off plate with two bolts on the drivers side which is the reverse lockout (prevents clipping reverse on 5-4 downshifts). 2. A single exhaust hanger tab on the tailshaft housing. 3. No dustcover where the tailshaft exits the housing. 4. The speedometer cable connector tab machine screw is on the bottom, not the top. 5. This transmission's shifter mount has the taller 'ears' (1983 only). The good folks at California Datsun have made a video showing the differences here: https://youtu.be/UrdQZeh7GsU The auction includes the transmission with the original shift lever and shift lever pin (taped to the shifter) and the lower transmission mount as shown in pictures. It will be shipped dry, wrapped and strapped to a small pallet. Will also ship from Great Falls, Montana as we will be visiting there in the next few weeks. Additional pictures are on the eBay ad. https://ebay.us/Mq52kq Advertiser SgtAngus Date 02/21/2020 Price Category Parts for Sale

  3. Hello all. I have been browsing Z site for the last 2 month and this sight has been the most hopeful. I figured it was time to become a member. My Z is at a stage between I love it and I want to set it on fire. Time and money but trying to have it back to road worthy again by spring 2020... fingers crossed. A giant thank you to all of yalls post that has help me in the last few months.
  4. Hey guys I’m new to this website but I have read a ton of stuff on here and it’s been a great help so that’s why I’ve joined. Anyways my 78 280z has been running fine for a while, I have all new fuel injectors, fuel pump, and afm. My fuel pump relay was bad so I wired up a switch to the wires where the fuel pump relay normally connects to and it’s worked fine. Recently however it has been idling horribly at around 500 rpm, but when I flip the fuel pump switch to off it jumps right back up to 1000rpm and idles fine until it dies from fuel starvation. It will also occasionally die out in addition to not accelerating sometimes. I’ll be driving and suddenly the power will not exactly cut out but not change if that makes sense. It’ll hold steady but stop reving and accelerating. It also blows darkish white smoke out of the exhaust when I rev it. I know it’s a lot of info but I can’t figure this out if anyone has had a similar problem or a solution please let me know!

  6. Parting out an 81 280z, complete engine, with wiring, turns over by hand, 5 speed(spins smoothly) with flywheel pedals dust cover and driveshaft, complete trim, misc interior parts and pieces. I'll post pictures asap. Feel free to message me with any questions
  7. I am in the middle of a 4/5 speed swap and the shifter is not even close. The trans looks it takes a different type.I have spent two hours on old forums and other sites but I can,t find what I need. Here is two pics. One is 4 sp trans with shifter the other is the back of 5 sp trans.Any suggestions?
  8. I was wondering if anyone knows of anyone that reproduces the JDM 5 speed wooden shift knobs. I had a JDM one accidentally fall and the plastic lense/gear map shattered  I was hoping that someone made a repro I could buy?
  9. Just how difficult is removing the automatic and installing a 5 speed tranny? Will the stock diff mated with the auto work Ok with the 5 speed?
  10. Ive recently picked up a 86' 300zx non-turbo trans (5speed) nd I have the 77' 280z bellhousing on it. but with the bellhousing on it will not shift into any gears except 5th (Possibly reverse if its a dogleg or whatever they call it). So what could be a problem? The shift rods clear the rod holes in the bellhousing and everything. but it wont shift. with the bellhousing off though, it shifts fairly well. any help would be great as I need this car running for going to work.
  11. I want a 5 speed but cant find any zx or z around that seems to have them. I want to know if there are other models of Nissan or any other car that share a similar trans. hopefully you can tell me also if the 280zx 5speed and the 240-280z splines will match when swapping in a 5 speed. thank you
  12. I have a 1975 280z with a four speed. When I bought it, the guy had a 5 speed as well that he gave me. It is an earlier wide ratio 5, but I'd still like to drop it in there to see if it's good. My brother, the pro mechanic, may pull it apart, just to see if the inside looks ok before we put it in. So, aside from the internals, is there other things I need to worry about? i.e.: - Do the 4 and 5 speeds use the same clutch and throw out? - same driveshaft and flange? - same tranny mount hardware? - I seem to have read a thread that suggests the shifter is a little long. Is that long on the top end, where I just cut an inch off the top, or is more finesse required? Is this a real incompatibility, or just a preference for a short throw shifter? - Anything else I forgot? I drive the car pretty regularly (it's my daily driver, when I'm not on my motorcycle), so I'd rather not get everything apart to find out I need part X, that is back order for 4 weeks. thanks the the info. Geof
