こんにちは, It's been a while since I have been on but we are finally in our new home and I have had some spare time to pull the z apart. So my question is, what would be the best build for a n42/n47 na set up? That's the block and head I have right now and I believe it shouldn't be a bad place to start. Any of you have experience with this build? I have read mountains on the n42 head but I can't find much on the n47. From the few things I have found some good ideas might be replacing the dished pistons for flat tops. From familiarity on the head I assume it would bring compression up to about a 10:1 and you would have to be crazy to not put a new cam in after that. (270 - 280 degrees on that cam, correct?) After that you would want your head matched up to your exhaust and intake for better flow. What else might you want to do? I currently am running round top SUs and the stock exhaust. The exhaust will be replaced for 2.5 and, if dreams come true, I will switch to some triples. What ideas can you folks dream up for this motor/head? I am not looking for any crazy power upgrade, just something to put a smile on my face. I wan't to make sure I can still daily it without putting racing fuel in it. Thank you in advance, the support I get from this forum by far makes it my go to place.

My current head took a dump, and I'm badly in need of a replacement! Looking specifically for E31, N42, or E88 heads. Located in Southern Cali, Carlsbad, San Marcos Area. Thanks!

N42 heads are pretty hard to find. This one looks like a nice one to rebuild. N42 Head on Ebay

Trying to remove the head of my n42/n42 the bolt circled in green snapped on me with one thread showing on the piece removed. Which means it should be below the block surface and not preventing me from removing the head, right? The bolt with the blue arrow felt as though it was cross threaded all the way in, and now that I have it backed out as far as it will go it just continues to spin. Ive tried prying up on it while turning it, ive tried tightening it again, ive tried beating on it in frustration...right now I have vice grips on it trying to pull it out. I dont know if they put a long bolt in a short hole and it mushroomed out on thebottom and is preventing me from getting the head off or what. I have hit it with a rubber mallet and have a pry bar wrapped in paper towels inserted in the intake port trying to yank on it, but the darn thing wont budge. And yes, I have removed the two head to front cover bolts. Does anyone have any helpful advice?

Hello classic z community! It's been a long time since I've posted here. I'm grateful for all the great advice I've gotten from this site. I hope everyone has been doing well. Now, onto the interesting part. The great news: I have an N42 head that needs a new home, and I don't want any money for it. The catch: the N42 head is attached to a P30 block that has a bad bearing. the N42 should be just fine and in working condition. The bottom end will need some work on the bearings to be useful. I hope someone can use it. I'd prefer to give it to someone who can/will take the whole thing so I can clean out my garage. once upon a time I started to take the head off the block, but got busy and that project was never completed. the engine was in my 1971 240z, but I don't believe it was the original engine. the engine is in Davis, CA. Thanks!

Hi all, This is pretty much my first time on a forum apart from a short time on rotary car club, so please excuse me if I do things a little wonky starting off. Anyway, I absolutely love s30's and intend on rebuilding one in the near future. I'm here to try and get started. My plans have changed over time from an ls swapped 300zx to a 350sbc swapped s30 to just realizing I wanted to retain the L platform in these cars and just go for lightweight, and great throttle response and handling with modest power. So I'm set on an L28 and after a bit of research here actually have come to the conclusion I'm looking for a p54 block with an n42 head in need of rebuild, or at least clean up and assembly. The problem is, I can't seem to find anything near me that seems like a reasonable price. The best thing I've found right now is a guy selling "l28 blocks with dished pistons" for 350 and a range of heads from 500-800. He seems to have a large warehouse full of parts and I will probably contact him with what I'm looking for. But I figured it would be worth a shot to hop on a forum that seems to be filled with nice, helpful people and see if anyone has these in the area(washington state, not afraid to drive). If you have any information feel free to send it my way, and thank you for your time. I hope to be on here troubleshooting in the near future, working on the Z. (:
