brandon Posted May 12, 2004 Share #1 Posted May 12, 2004 Hello all.I'm a newbie to the Z world-- just bought a very nice 76 280Z:http://devnulled.com/gallery/280Z-calitocoloradoI've worked on / modified DSM's for around 5 years, and can do about anything on them without a problem except rebuild engines, trannies, etc by hand, but decided it was time for something new. Anyhow, on the drive home I noticed sort of a light thumping/clunking/shaking under acceleration. My guess without being very familliar with these cars yet is that an engine or tranny mount of some sort has went bad, but maybe it's something different, or a common problem for these cars. Any advice or suggestions, or something for me to check to help figure out what the problem might be? I'd appreciate it greatly.Thanks,- Brandon Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/11679-clunking-under-acceleration/ Share on other sites

TomoHawk Posted May 12, 2004 Share #3 Posted May 12, 2004 Bingo.... Sounds like the classic case of diff mount being worn See ZGarage Site: http://www.geocities.com/zgarage2001/probs.html Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/11679-clunking-under-acceleration/#findComment-80741 Share on other sites
ChrisA Posted May 12, 2004 Share #4 Posted May 12, 2004 Nice looking Z Brandon! Welcome to the club. You will find really good peple and info here. I agree with everyone's post, its most likely the differential mount. Much luck, and come back often.Chris Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/11679-clunking-under-acceleration/#findComment-80743 Share on other sites

That's kind of funny, my car has about 3/4 of the things mentioned on there which I probably would of eventually started looking for information about. Thanks again! I guess I'll pay more attention to the default search box the next time I do it. Maybe it's limiting by date or something.Anyhow, I'll give that a shot when I get home from work. Thanks! The interior is just as nice, I'm totally stoked to have a Z in this great of condition.I'll order the service manual CD when I get home from work to get a better idea, but offhand, how involved of a job is it to replace? demon_slayer420 Posted May 28, 2004 Share #8 Posted May 28, 2004 I had the same noise happening in my 72' 240z and it turned out to be a u-joint! Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/11679-clunking-under-acceleration/#findComment-83110 Share on other sites
beandip Posted May 28, 2004 Share #9 Posted May 28, 2004 Brandon , welcome aboard, I agree check the ujoints , some times it is hard to tell on the half shafts but get the rear end in the air and check for any play . While you are at it when you lift the rear end do it from the differential and see if it moves upward . There should be no slack there if so yes the mount is shot. Does the car clunk when you shift . Do check the drive shaft ujoints as well . There are some years of Zs that the drive shaft ujoints cannot be replaced but I cant remember which years that is. Some one here will let us know . The diff mount isn't a big job , something to do on a weekend .All the best form Oregon , Gary by the way what is a DSM??
