How loud are twice pipes?

Hey guys, i want to buy an exhaust system that has free flow but isnt too loud.....i hate rice muffler sounds....so will twice pipes sound anything like this? or should i be looking for somthing else? thanks.

I have a six into two (2 1/4") pipes back to two reverse flow turbo mufflers. The muffs are on each side of fuel cell. It is not "buzzy" or "farty", it's a deeper throatier sound. It is legal noise wise, but it gets loud on full throttle.

Sweet, i have one more question for anyone who has or knows about MSA's twice pipe system, it says "with header" but $150? that seems very cheap for a header and the rest of the system, does it actually come with a header? thanks.

Not so fast. Note that I was able to run TWO muffs. Will you fit one or two? Do you have the room? Running two pipes to one muffler doesn't seem quite right.

The twice pipes come with mufflers, but they are only small diameter glass packs. As the fiberglass burns out, it will continue to get louder and louder.

I had a set on my first 240 with the stock exhaust manifold and loved it until the mufflers started to burn out, then it got way to loud. Neighbor up the street used to call the cops on me at least once a week, it was legal, but just barely. In the end, it was almost as loud as a friends race car with dual straight pipes.

The "with header" doesn't include a header, only a different head pipe to be used with a header, instead of the stock manifold.

I’ve got a 6 in 2 header and dual straight pipes (like a works car) with a sort of glass packs at the rar end.

The pipes are each, 2 inches (50mm) and for street noise reduction I use one steel sponge a pipe. The kind of sponge which you use to clean the cooking pan. Once I did measured it and I came without reduction at 120db! :devious: After 4000rpm it is like a trombone! And that is loud very loud….i don’t think the glass pack do any good in fact they are to low and therefore I’m thinking to get rid of them.

Couplea things....

It really depends on your compression. Street cars with twice pipes are loud. Anything over 11:1 with twice pipes is nearly unbearable. You can not stand behind the car without ear injury.

I have considered using one of the 2-in-2-out mufflers with twice pipes. A lot of extra work considering the gas tank position and whatnot. Not sure what the outcome would be.

You are absolutely right!

Without my ‘steel noise reduction aid kit’ it was not normal to drive. At the end of the day you had a very nice headache.

We had to drive a night rally, can you imaging…… and my co pilot said to me “we have to do something with the noise”. And so I came to the idea with steel sponges, which reduces a lot of sound. A cheap way to match the problem and it gives enough counter pressure in high gears. Something I missed with open pipes.

I likes the idea of Twice pipes but living the wrong side of the water to buy them I decided to make my own system. I used a couple of RC40 exhaust systems that are noramlly fitted to a Mini. After some 6 hours of cutting, modifying, welding & swearing it was finished.

The results are good, it is not noisy at all at motorway speeds but on acceleration it sounds great & most important the system should be good for no power drop up to 260 bhp ! The car´s performance has certainly improved on the first shakedown run along the motorway the car was pulling an indicated 218 kph before I thought about my driving licence. The car certainly pulls a lot harder from 4,000 revs to 6,000 revs. I need to take the car to the local rolling road to reset up the car & confirm the results. I´m busy for the next couple of weeks but asap will report back.

I have an original NOS set of twice pipes, that I plan on installing. 1.75" pipes, glasspacks are 24" long paired with chrome tips.

I know the glasspacks will probably need at least resonators on each pipe in the tunnel area, but has anyone used a crossover. On a V-8, the crossover connection smooths the pulses and usually produces more power. If it would remove some of the reported harshness from the twice pipes, it would definitely be a positive.
