Gas Tank Questions

Ok guys I got my tanks back from the shop a while back and its all new looking and pretty , I also ordered a new sending unit , is there a way of knowing which direction it goes as in up or down?

Also 2nd question the vent system lines<rubber ones> I know the 3 main ones I had were rotted so badly they broke apart when trying to remove, these line are the only non new item for the tank due to the roughly $170 for all three , any suggestions or am I out of luck and just have to spend it? Has anyone used univeral hose or heater hose or know any alternatives? Thanks

and purchase some fuel line hose. As long as your carbureted I dont see a problem.

170 for 3 lines, WOW thats expensive!

I went to several parts stores and no one had the fuel lines in the diameter that was required that was my first plan

The FUEL lines can be obtained at NAPA.

My local NAPA had all of them in rolls. From the large vent hose to the smallest one and all of them stamped with the wording (fuel line).

I tok the advice from one auto store and went to a boat supply shop and they had the right size lines and they were cheep.

The only hose you should have a problem with, is the one at the rear (passenger side) which has a 180 degree bend in it. Using generic fuel oil rated hose in this location will not work unless you can find a way to keep it from kinking at that bend. A kink there will render the vent useless. Some folks have used a steel spring inserted in the hose to keep it open. I just bought that one hose from Nissan ( about $50) and used generic hose for the others.

I am curious do you think I could use a brass or metal fitting to make the 180 or maybe just 90 and try to make it work? and anyone with the fule sending unit , none of my books specify which way it goes in as in up or down ,

If you can find a 180 degree steel tube and a short length of hose to make the turn, then you could use generic hose. I couldn't find one at my local hardware store, so I took the path of least resistance (OEM hose).

The float needs to hang down so that as fuel fills the tank the float rises. Should be obvious as to which way to install. Hold it horizontal, and see which orientation lets the float hang down the most.

I removed the evap tank and eliminated all but the small vent line that runs to the front of the car and the one that has the 90 deg bend that is 5/8" in dia. there is enough room to allow for a gradual 90 and it wont kink if given the right amount of slack. B-killer is right there is a vent line from Nissan that fits this and is pre bent. In fact there is a line for this vary vent that allows to remove the evap tank . This tank was only required in the US . I have the part number if you need it some where , I think they are about $30. from midwestz Chloe knows the number and can get the part. Gary

Right. At least two of the cars on the board (26th-Z and mine) have established that ours came without evap tanks because they were made in 1969, and the laws didn't mandate the evap tanks until 1970. Got a new hose from Chloe, but we did it by picture and not by part number. Pic of the one originally on my car attached.
