Just picked up 73 240z. Should I rebuild the L24 or swap to something else???

VQ35 here is a vary good site to have a look at geocities.com/row4navy/ Have a look around there is a section on strokers as well as a lot of good info. For one thing to going back to your first post . The L-24 cannot be punched out to 30 safely . One other thing if you do go other than carbs . You will need to change fuel tanks or modify yours . You will need an injector fuel pump and they mount inside the tank I believe not like the 240. All the F-54 blocks are the same , the turbo engine has dished pistons and a P-90 head. The injected engines have the P-79 head and flat topped pistons. This engine block is the last evolution of refinement of inline Zs. It has different cylinder cooling casting and supports internally than the other 280 blocks.

Needles will be set up for a 3.0 - 3.1L but what some people don't realise is a lean mixture will give you power.

I'm installing bigger valves than the already large P90 ones they will recieve the 3angle job etc.All this and my goal is for 280HP then when i go with tripples maybe 330HP. :)

Whoa, lean mixture gives MORE power? This misconception must be going around, I read on the SV650 site that "leaner is meaner" (i.e., more power). This is absolutely untrue, max power is made on the RICH side of stoichiometric. Stoich is ~14:1 (14.7:1?). Max power is *typically* made around 13:1, and power falls off quicker on the lean side. 12.5:1 - 13:1 is a pretty good target.

It is common practice to dyno tune for maximum power if no sniffer is available, as tuning for maximum power will put you in a safe A/F region.

Maybe the "leaner is meaner" misconception comes from the turbo world, where they run a lot richer as a hedge against detonation. If you're in the 11 - 12:1 A/F range, then leaner will make you more power, but with a medium - high-boost turbo application you're sorta taking a risk. NA, not a problem.

Interesting I had always thought Rich made more power myself until a friend of mine said to tune the SU's on the leaner side as they are more powerfull that way. Maybe he was talking about extreme's I'm not sure.

BTW I'm no expert on all this stuff I'm still learning I have a friend who is helping me out so he's teaching me as we go. Once it's all built and installed I'll be in a better position to comment on the best way to set the Z up N/A Style anyway.

Yes, I agree. From my knowledge, going a lil richer is on the "safer" side. Going "lean" on the other hand, asking for detonation! Makes me wonder about what some of the other members are hearing...
