Random Q: what's hotter leather or vinyl?

Recommended Posts

If you had two Zs, one with the original black vinyl interior, and another where the seats, transmission tunnel, door panels, were re-upholstered in black leather - which do you think on a hot summer's day would be hotter temperature wise?

That's my contribution to the random question of the day... :)

Wow, Eric. That's the loaded question of the day!!! Vicky answered so eloquently. Hotter to sit on? Vinyl, hands down. Hotter - heat energy - cabin temperature? Proabably the same. Vinyl does not keep heat energy as long as leather, generally speaking. Personally, if I were not locked into the "all original - low VIN" thing, I would pay the big bucks and have the interior done in leather like it was originally intended and the way cars should be upholstered. Leather - black leather - is a bear to keep from drying out. Leather is serious high maintenance. Vinyl lasts much longer. It is much easier to keep clean. But I'm sure Vicky would agree with me on this. There is nothing as nice as leather.

yes, that's what i thought too leather is better... this is as i burned my back once again on the wife's karmann ghia vinyl seat after lunch... well we'll just have to see now if this is in the cards for my 240 sometime in the future... unlike HM the 26th, I don't have the lo# problem being probably one of the later 73s made.... ;)

Oh and another thing... vintage 60s/70s sportscar preferably carburated with leather interior... you get in and smell the old leather and fuel.... hmmmmmm

Ha ha - I reckon people who have leather think its hotter, and people who have vinyl think it's hotter! LOL

IMO leather is also capable of burning your back! I've done it in my old man's car, which is light grey leather (i.e. a colour that doesn't exactly absorb the rays like black would).
