schematic for hoses on stock air box?

Recommended Posts

Can anyone describe the attachments to the stock air box, or send to a site with a diagram?

I have an early 71 Z, and I just bought an airbox off ebay. I'm not 100 percent sure which hoses hook up where. My car came with a couple pair of aftermarket filters, but Ive heard the aftermarkets may not be that great without air horns??

Anyway, I think i'd like to hook up the old box to see if there is any noticable difference in looks and feel. ( I did note it weighs alot more than aftermarket!)

Also, I have that little Kand N breather filter hooked up to my valve cover, Ive heard that might actually not be a good idea, whats the story on that?

Deadflo,

On my 72, at least, from memory.... each float bowl has a vent that goes to the air box, were your filter is on your valve cover... a hose from there to the air box. and then there's the warm air hose from the exhaust manifold up to just below the "snorkle" or air inlet. I think thats it.

'59 ghia is correct. He missed the hose from the lower crankcase that also has the small hose that goes to your dist. vaccum advance. That hose is larger on the engine side. As for the warmer, I got some some aluminum hose from the parts store and just used a small wire to attach it to the header. That was required for state emissions here and it does help on cold mornings

Thanks guys, I am still a bit confused about the third small nipple toward the bottom of the airbox. Where does it go?

I also now longer have an airpump, doesnt the other large nipple on the bottom of the box supposed to go to the input on the airpump?

One small nipple on the air box goes to the "Flow Guide Valve" that mounts on the inner fender below the coil. (you may have tossed that since you also tossed the air pump. Check your FSM "Emissions" dection for picture of it and diagram of connections. If you don't have the Flow Guide Valve, plug the nipple on the carb air box.

alright, thanks for the info on the stock airbox hookup. Does anyone know if the little K and N breather filter I have on my valve cover is actually a bad thing? I thought I heard it could cause bad odors in the cabin, and I have noticed that especially on deceleration.

Also whats everybody's thoughts on after market air filters? I have a couple vintage pairs Ive used off and on but thought id try the orignal box for awhile...

There is a K&N filter element for the stock air cleaner. Available at MSA, part #11-5001 $56.06. You get the benefit of the reusable filter with the stock air horns. Win-Win?

I've had one for 4 years. Highly recommended.
