240zis4me Posted December 15, 2004 Share #1 Posted December 15, 2004 Im new to this site and planning on buying a 240z soon. I been researching close to a year. I like to know if chemical rust removal helps any, especially on light to moderate areas. And other rust be cut out patched and painted? This will not be a show car but something nice to cruise around in. Any suggestion? Live in sunny southern California so future rust will not be too much of a problem. Bambikiller240 Posted December 15, 2004 Share #2 Posted December 15, 2004 The method of rust removal doesn't much matter. It's just important to remove it, and protect the area from further rust. Since you live in So Cal, you won't have a problem with finding a Z, so just look for the best exdample you can afford. Take your time and find one with as little rust as possible. You'll be miles and dollars ahead. My $.02 Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/14333-light-rust-removal/#findComment-105193 Share on other sites

Bambikiller240 Posted December 16, 2004 Share #4 Posted December 16, 2004 There are a lot in Nor Cal, but So Cal appears to have many more. Judging by turn out at Z events.FWIW, when searching for a classic car you are miles and $$$$ a head if you search for a car in better condition, rather than in a lower price range. Of course if all you are looking for is transportation....................Get the best car you can afford, but be aware that cheaper cars will need more attention in a variety of ways. beandip Posted December 17, 2004 Share #6 Posted December 17, 2004 buy the cleanest rust free car you can afford. You will be way ahead . Then pose questions about anything on the site. Just for info. 2 + 2 cars are less desireable and less collectiable. Still vary good cars . Just bigger and heaverier. Lack of rust is the biggest thing , or the least amount of it. 240zis4me Posted December 18, 2004 Author Share #7 Posted December 18, 2004 I have seen a couple of 240z in my price range and test drove them and it ran fine. The problem is they never have the paper work right. Tags are way over due, own tickets, try to sell the car with another person name on the pink slip registration. Im more worry about having the title transferring in my name then rust. :disappoin but i will keep looking. Thanks guys Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/14333-light-rust-removal/#findComment-105441 Share on other sites
kenz240z Posted January 10, 2005 Share #8 Posted January 10, 2005 I've used a product called rust mort to neutralize surface rust. It stops the rust and can be painted over. I think most auto paint supply shops carry it, maybe even a parts house, if they carry auto body repair supplies.Kenny P. 240zis4me Posted January 18, 2005 Author Share #9 Posted January 18, 2005 Thanks i found a 71 240z for less then $1500. I took it to a mechanic who works on old datsun. It needed minor work but nothing i could not handle. Now i started to remove some of the old paint prepairing to have it prep and painted. So far i started with the left rear quarter panel. I washed the car down, then i started to strip the paint with sand paper. I started off with 600 wet, then 400, to 200. The paint is so old and weak the 600 was removing some of the paint. The car is green but underneath is orange. When i sand i sand down until i see grey or mental. When i rest or quit i dry off any wet spots to avoid more rust. I usually do not have to worry about that too much being from so.cal. Any rust that needed to be cut, remove and bondo (FIBER GLASS) im going to let a pro do it. This is my first time sanding a car down any suggestion from you guys. All ya i been searching on the web and here so i been doing my homework. Just want to make sure. Thanks Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/14333-light-rust-removal/#findComment-109053 Share on other sites
