Interior rivet alternatives?

Recommended Posts

Where can I find these?

Motorsport Auto is once place that carries them:

I don't know about shipping to Sweden; there may well be another source closer to you.

Edit: sorry, I was referring just to the interior rivets that started this thread. If you're interested in lenses and plastic panels there are other sources.

Plastic rivets with screw-in pins: Motormite and Dormar are the manufacturer names and supposedly they are availible at Pep Boys, Autozone and others. Local Autozone (and other local parts houses) showed the part number on computer but computer system would not allow ordering. I finally found one place that could order yesterday and they should be in next week but I'm out of town for a week. As soon as I can varify that they fit and how well the work, I'll post info

The interior plastic panels are available from Classic Datsun Motorsports

As I mentioned in a previous post my local auto paint shop carries a selection of fasteners as might be required by auto body shops. I went ahead and ordered a box of rivets that were listed as applying to Nissan and appeared to be a close match to what we require. I'm not sure which models these were used in but I'm guessing that Nissan learned a lesson and came up with a better alternative. As you can see in the attached picture these use a plastic screw with a phillipps head instead of the smooth push pin. While the head is slightly larger that's not really a problem. The barrel part is slightly too big which makes for a tight fit. A box of 25 of these was under $10. MSA lists the original rivets at 10 for $6.50 and people seem to often pay far more than that on eBay.

I measured the pins and the holes, and it is 1/8 inch (3.2mm) and a 1/8 inch gauge pin fits in the hole perfectly. So whatever you use to put in there ( nail, kabob stick) it needs to be that size.

Personally, I'd prefer to use something that won't rust or cause rusting- like a steel pin or nail. I'll see if I have any 1/8 carbon rods or maybe the hobby store has 1/8 plastic rod.

Tail panels use a regular metal pop rivet I think (all the ones I've seen)

I haven't posted here in a while but I did wind up with a solution I liked and it was inexpensive.

"Dorman" makes a plastic one with the screw pin that can be removed and replaced (a few times). They make assortments that you can find in that you find in most auto parts but thay can't get a box of what you need.

Fastenal ( http://www.fastenal.com ) stores can order the boxes of 25 for just a few bucks. I wound up using pn 700-589 which is a 1/4" rivet. This rewired drilling the holes with a 1/4" bit which is barely over the existing hole size.

I don't remember exactly but about $3 for 25 (black only)

You speaking about the interior rivots? Any ideas on the rivots holding the rear face plate holding the taillights?

The interior rivets use a 1/8 inch pin. The ones for the outside finisher (on my 280Z) use a similar rivet with a screw center instead of a ordinary pin. I believe there's a picture around here somewhere...

thx

Do you mean the Tail Light FINISHER? Which just surrounds the tail lights and doesn't hold them?

If so, the "original" were a smaller version of the interior rivets. They were plastic, and required a pin to spread the 4 quarters of the rivet shaft. You pushed the pin through and could then remove the rivet.

Many people use pop-rivets, since usually it's only when you repaint the back that you remove the finisher, but "technically" it's incorrect. I've also seen people use regular Phillips Head Screws with the decorative contoured washer both interior and finishers and they look quite good IMO.

For those interested, I've located a decent replacement for the black interior retainers (rivets). These are nearly identical to OEM with the following differences. The finish is satin instead of shiny and the head is about 1-2mm smaller in diameter. Unless you're stuck on originality or doing a concours restoration these should make you very happy. I can provide them at .35 cents apiece. Aftermarket is on the left and original on the right. The photos are the best I could do with my camera.
