Palmer Posted February 20, 2005 Share #1 Posted February 20, 2005 When you hear someone talk about or see an ad that says rebuilt engine, what was actually replaced? I recently purchased a 78 with high mileage. Engine and tranny will be coming out to re-paint the engine bay and I want to get the engine rebuilt. So, what needs to be done to restore? Looking forward to the list... Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/15052-78-280-engine-rebuildrebuild-what/ Share on other sites
beandip Posted February 21, 2005 Share #2 Posted February 21, 2005 When doing a rebuild on a engine , much depends on the condition it is in to start with. You will most likely need to have the head gone through , the valves ground and or replaced if necessary . New valve seals , likely new springs and lash pads possably new rocker arms and cam. The head resurfaced or milled dipending on what you intend for the car performance wise. The block should be disassembled and hot tanked . The cylinders either bored or honed . That depends on the condition again . If bored then new pistons . In any event new rings , and if the pistons are good and the cylinder was only honed they can be reused . The rods and crank shaft shold be tested for cracks , magnafluxed , possability new wrist pins. New timing chain and tensioner and gear . Possibly a new oil pump and water pump. Resurface the flywheel and new clutch and pressure plate . Throw out bearing and all new gaskets and seals. If the crankshaft is good it should be turned or polished. New inserts , rod and crank bearings, new head bolts and possably rod cap and crankshaft bolts. I am shure I am forgetting something but this is most of it. DWhiteaz Posted February 23, 2005 Share #3 Posted February 23, 2005 I am new to the website and posting questions..... I rebuilt my engine about 12 years ago and now only have about 36,000 miles on the rebuild. However, I am thinking about having the engine (top end) primarily redone and everything replace, harnesses, injectors, throttle body, water pump, oil, alternator, rework the head, hone the intake to clean the fuel flow, increase the exhaust from the 1.5 inch to 2 to 2.5 if possible, and all the stuff that needs to shine to look good. Does anyone know of a real good engine shop in the E. Bay area of San Francisco to go to? I live in the Martinez, Concord area and looking for some good and reasonable in price.thoughts!
