  1. 1. What do you think of white guage faces?

    • There a great upgrade on the Z
    • I think they look okay but would get a spare set of guages to do it to first
    • They are too ricey for me stick to stock
    • The don't appeal to me but I wouldn't say they wouldn't put me off a potential Z

My husbands red 77 has white face guages with red bulbs. It looks very cool. The needles are painted red also. The guages kind of glow red, it's not a drastic bright red light like some might think.

I believe you can buy the red bulbs nowadays but at the time this car was being customized they were not available, at least in my area. We painted the original bulbs with red fingernail polish and it came out perfect. Just the red glow we were looking for.

Is it just me, or is there something hypocritical about a bunch of Japaneese sports Car enthusiasts calling other Japaneese cars "ricers?"

I dont get it.

Please enlighten.

I'm with you on that. I think of the 240-260-280 as rice from a different era. I will say though I've met more muscle car fanatics who like the early Zs than Honda Civics tricked out.

You also need to realise the term "rice" has evolved somewhat.....well at least over here is australia it has. For example, a mitsubishi lancer with a huge body kit, neons, graphics and a fart can for an exhaust is considered rice. A hyundai excel with the same mods = rice (but it's korean). A V6 commodore with the same mods would also get called rice. Any yank car again with the same sort of mods = rice.

Basically anything with purely cosmetic mods with no real thought for performance would be considered rice. I don't think there'd be a single person here that would call a zed car rice purely because it's Japanese.

I had these gauge faces on my last 240z 5 years ago. Printed them on card stock paper, but you could still tell they were printed and glued on. They did look good, and made the gauges very legible at night, but overall I didn't really care for them. Of course, printer technology has come a long way since then.

I ordered these for my current one, but nothing wild, http://www.speedhut.com/15orders_el_detail.asp?auto_number=16&bhcp=1

I'm getting black faces with classic lettering, so it will look as close to stock in the day as possible, but still be bright enough at night.

It's interesting that some folks think the white face gauges are "ricey"! Does anyone remember the old Smith gauges in early sports cars? These babies were white faced and set a trend in sports car gauge looks. Certainly not a "ricey" thing. This RICER thing is rediculous.....its just a bunch of young car guys who don't have the $$$ to do all the right things to make their car a real goer and happen to like Japanese sedans and such. They spend what they can to at least make their car look racey. Give it a break, at least they are into cars!

I dont think the white faces make it look 'Ricey', however they dont quite look right either...TOMOHAWK is right in that the font is just a bit off for the car, not 'period correct'. The font is a little too modern..

I did download the template though...and I would like to see the white gauges backlit with green or blue. That just might look really good, especially if it gives the whole face a colored glow.

If someone has night pics with colored bulbs, please post them!

240zx,

Some of these guys spend 20,000 on extras, and that's on a new car...I don't see how that isn't having the money...it's that they spend all this money to make their cars look rediculous...that's what ricey is to me....

The white guages themselves look okay, but you really want them because of the lights being so dim on the guages--do like Tomo and upgrade the bulbs first.
