cj71z Posted July 18, 2005 Share #2 Posted July 18, 2005 I'm planning on relocating my battery behind the pass. seat while I tackle the rust under mine. I think it's best to remove the battery tower by drilling out the spot welds. You can then sandblast,grind,wirewheel the metal to see how bad it is. If it's bad I would cut and weld in new metal. You can then clean up the tower, reweld back to the car and paint with por 15. They sell those felt mats for under the batteries to prevent acid from leaking onto the car body. beandip Posted July 27, 2005 Share #4 Posted July 27, 2005 I removed the tray with a spotweld cutter. Be vary careful , I went through the inner fender in a couple of places . I was having some welding done any way so I just added it to the list. I through bolted mine back in after I cleaned off all the rust with a sand blaster and metal ready and a generous coating of POR . By bolting in place using stainless bolts and locking nuts I still have por in between the supports and the inner fender . At least this is my reasoning. I also treated the stand well on all sides , which is nearly impossable with it welded in place. I have pictures if interested. send me a PM with your email address . The best way to keep this from happening again is not only to POR15 the area but then go to a battery like an Optima. I thought that we were only talking about the battery tray, but yes your car can and will rust in many other locations if not treated and properly prevented. If it's only surface rust i'd just sand blast it then coat with like por or rust bullet.
