TomoHawk Posted July 24, 2005 Share #1 Posted July 24, 2005 Has anybody tried to install a 3rd brake light? Where would you put it, along the top?hiding the wires is the only thing to figure out.thx Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/16684-hi-mount-brake-light/ Share on other sites
kenz240z Posted July 24, 2005 Share #2 Posted July 24, 2005 I would think that if you mounted a 3rd brake light right above the rear hatch that you could drill a hole into the roof that would then be covered by the light itself. The wiring for the light could then be run through the same passage as the rear window defrost wires and dome light wires. From there the wires could run down the passenger side behind the door opening and along the floor up to the dash, where they would be spliced into the brake light wiring. Just be sure to use a grommet on the hole in the roof, and seal it all up with a bit of silicon. LanceM Posted July 24, 2005 Share #3 Posted July 24, 2005 My thought would be to install one that attached to the inside of the rear window at the top. That way no holes to drill, and plenty of body panels to hide the wiring under. For attachment I would think about using a body molding double stick tape, future removal would then be possible without any hint that it was ever there. kenz240z Posted July 24, 2005 Share #4 Posted July 24, 2005 Then it should be really easy to have the wires for the 3rd brake light follow one of the rear defrost wires. Should make for a nice, clean installation. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/16684-hi-mount-brake-light/#findComment-131865 Share on other sites
TomoHawk Posted July 25, 2005 Author Share #5 Posted July 25, 2005 I would think that if you mounted a 3rd brake light right above the rear hatch that you could drill a hole into the roof that would then be covered by the light itself. You'll need three holes- one for wires, two for mounting bolts. Then the light will mess up the lines of the car.So no go on that idea. Lance's seems to be the best, attaching with tape or glue to t he inside of the window. It would be OK to run the wires along with the efroster, but then to the brake lights for power, not allo the way up to the dash harness.thx Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/16684-hi-mount-brake-light/#findComment-131898 Share on other sites
LanceM Posted July 25, 2005 Share #6 Posted July 25, 2005 I was thinking about this for my own Z being that 4X4's and SUV's are the norm here, the Z sits so low a high up brake lite seems like a very good attenion getter. I was thinking of going to the pick and pull and looking at was there, some later Blazers and mini vans have a light attached to the rear window I belive, might be a cheap and easy swap, just a case of replacing the mounting tape and connecting the wires. Another thought is there are some cars, can't say what but I think Chrysler, used those red LED strips, they were very bright and I would think they could be made into a very neat install that really wouldn't disturb the inner look of the car. TomoHawk Posted July 25, 2005 Author Share #7 Posted July 25, 2005 Let us know what you come up with. I tried some googling, and I ended up at a website that sells porsche stuff (doesn't VB sell Porsche stuff?) and one model Porsche has a neat light that I think would work on a Z.thx Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/16684-hi-mount-brake-light/#findComment-131985 Share on other sites
LanceM Posted July 25, 2005 Share #8 Posted July 25, 2005 If it ever gets below about 1000000 degrees around here I've got to head out to the pick and pull for some other stuff and will look around and see what might work. TomoHawk Posted July 25, 2005 Author Share #9 Posted July 25, 2005 Pick & pulls are funny places... You tell them you want a "part", and they ask you "What car?" when you just want to look for ANY part, like the brake light fixture. I had to do a LOT of explaining just to get some seats from an Eclipse. Same thing just for a shifter handle. I finally went to the Dodge dealer for the latter part. What do you say when you go to the piuck & pull, or do they know you well enough to just let you by?thx Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/16684-hi-mount-brake-light/#findComment-131999 Share on other sites
LanceM Posted July 25, 2005 Share #10 Posted July 25, 2005 I guess I'm lucky, the place I go to you just sign a waiver for getting hurt and you go wander around. You yank what you want and head back to the counter, usually the girl looks at it and says "that it?" I say "yep" she says "$20" I say, "but it's rusty and scrached up and the only one I can find, $10" she says "$15 and that's it", I pull out my money and go My best buy was a set of M/T cast aluminum valve covers for the 355 I put in my Blazer, I put the dirty nasty looking things on the floor, bottom up of course, got them for $15 for the pair, went home and looked on ebay they are running around $80 a pair Anyway most of the ones around here will let you go "looking", just tell them you're building a rod and are trying to scope out if a so and so headlight assembly or something will work. Others will only let you go out with a yard worker who will pull the part, I just don't go to them anymore. e_racer1999 Posted July 25, 2005 Share #11 Posted July 25, 2005 i've seen a 3rd light on a Z around here... it looks to be a self-adhesive flat black piece that is about the length of the hatch... it has a nifty LED light in the middle and it mounts right above the hatch. i figure it's a universal piece, but it looked pretty cool.. If they want somebody to do the work FOR you, I would expect to pay extra for the labor. I would try to find a friendlier place. Unfortunately, the heat also brings out all the bees and other stinging/biting bugs.
