sphy1005 Posted August 8, 2005 Share #1 Posted August 8, 2005 hey whats up i just bought a 73' 240z. its in pretty good condition but could use body work and little things here and there. my ? is the guy i bought it from told me it had an L28 motor in it. i couldn't find anything numbers on the block (i still have to degrease some of it though) the only thing i saw was on the head which read E88. how can i tell if its an L28 or L24. its a 5 speed tranny. it has the two carbs on it too. the car runs great though i just want to know which motor it is. ok just two more ?s . what kind of power can i get out of this motor L28 or L24. i've built lots of jap late model performance cars but have never had anything with carbs. and can u turbocharge these motors. ok 1 more ?. i read in some threads that the 73 is not as good as the earlier models, why? thanks Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/16835-new-to-z-cars-have-s/ Share on other sites
Ed Posted August 9, 2005 Share #2 Posted August 9, 2005 hey whats up i just bought a 73' 240z. its in pretty good condition but could use body work and little things here and there. my ? is the guy i bought it from told me it had an L28 motor in it. i couldn't find anything numbers on the block (i still have to degrease some of it though) the only thing i saw was on the head which read E88. how can i tell if its an L28 or L24. its a 5 speed tranny. it has the two carbs on it too. the car runs great though i just want to know which motor it is. ok just two more ?s . what kind of power can i get out of this motor L28 or L24. i've built lots of jap late model performance cars but have never had anything with carbs. and can u turbocharge these motors. ok 1 more ?. i read in some threads that the 73 is not as good as the earlier models, why? thanksTo find out what engine you have look at the block, passenger side under the #6 spark plug. there should be a flat spot where it meets the head. The engine serial # is there if it starts with a L28 then that's what you have. Which L28 you ask? Look on the drivers side by the motor mount. There is a raised letter and number there either N42 or F54. The F54 is more desirable because of it's siamesed cylinders (stronger block). Even thought I've never heard of a N42 block failing. Power???? how much $$$$ do you have? From 150 to 300 HP. The reason the 73 is not as good as earlier models is because it had carburators designed to pass tougher emission laws (several people have changed to earlier carbs, flat top to round top). It has thicker bars in the doors in case of a side impact. Also it has the less desirable illuminating heater control console. Oh, and last thing the front bumper sticks out farther. Personally I like the 73 more because it is the most refined of the 240Z'z. :classic: Oh yea, welcome to the club..Ed Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/16835-new-to-z-cars-have-s/#findComment-133466 Share on other sites
