Hey, I'm in the process of shopping around for an exhaust system, and tips to top it all off. I like stright cut, rolled edge tips, but the only ones that fit 2.25 inch tubing have an outlet of a very "rice" evoking 4 inches. Maybe I'm wrong and it looks fine? not too big for a Z? Let me know what you guys think. You like non-rolled edge tips? Let me know. I'm open to suggestions.

I'd check summit racing for some reasonable sized exhaust tips, 4" is too close to being ricey IMO. I personally get a kick out of my set up which is just (2) 18" glasspacks with 2.25" tubing and a 2.5" slash cut tip. People are always confused with so much noise coming out of such a small tip.

Too big, looks tacky IMO. But what do you mean "the only ones that fit 2.25 inch tubing have an outlet of ... 4 inches"? I feel that if you can't find a tip smaller than 4" you aren't looking around enough! Plenty of choice in Australia at least, even a "love heart" shape if that's your thing... For my Z I chose 3", which fits perfectly in the lower valence.

The only removable ones I've seen in the style I like (Straight cut, rolled edge, single opening, 6-8 inches long) have a 4" outlet. BTW, just as a bonus question, do you guys prefer chrome or polished stainless steel?

I found an angle cut 2.5 bolt on down at pep boys that fits right on my 2.25. It doesn't look half bad, but I'm just using it until I can find a weld on. They are harder to come by around here. Pics in the link below. As far as chrome of steel, its really all up to you. Chrome is probably going to be cheaper, but will need polished, whereas you car pretty much just leave steel along and it still looks fine.

4" Exhaust Tip Too Big?

Yes. :)

My zed.... 2.25" pipe straight out the back, painted matte black. Looks great IMO, suits the car quite well. IMO, a car with a shape as great as the zed, doesn't need any bling to make it look good. Such things are just a distraction from it's true beauty. :)
