erikgiles Posted August 20, 2005 Share #1 Posted August 20, 2005 Good afternoon, Well my 240Z is finally complete; G-nose and fender flares added, all paint and rust stripped off then repainted. I'm very happy with it. This is a 1970, and it is rust free. I even got the G-nose headlight covers shipped to me from my friend who lives in Tokyo. As you can see at the shifter, the original color was green but I have painted it silver and black. Problem is, some exhaust is getting in through the gear shift area. The rubber is completely shot, Any advice on how to replace this? What is the process and what kind of adhesive do I need? Thanks all. erikgiles Posted August 21, 2005 Author Share #2 Posted August 21, 2005 All work done by Lewis body shop in Manakin, VA. Completely stripped and repainted, with a paint code from a 2003 Maserati. G-Nose installed, painted deep silver and black trim. Added headlight cover directly imported from Japan. They did all this for less than $3500. I recommend the shop, especially since the owner of the shop is a Z car fan, he knows the car quite well. There is no rust on this car. All new rubber around the glass, and new windshield. I know the purists may not like the color, but I preferred the silver/black color scheme. Next, I will redo the upholstery with one of the original black kits. loy Posted August 21, 2005 Share #3 Posted August 21, 2005 mine was out and was placed on top. My 260 has a metal thing that screwed on top of the boot to make the seal. I'm not sure if the boot is pose to belike that cause in mine the hole boot is ontop the hole Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/16982-advice-on-fixing-shift-boot/#findComment-135020 Share on other sites
WarrenZ Posted August 21, 2005 Share #4 Posted August 21, 2005 You could try the good old duct tape but it is never 100% . My advice is don't waste your time trying, buy a new one which I assume are readily available in the US for less than $30US, as the one I purchased here in Australia for $50AUD was genuine Nissan North America. There is also a metal ring that screws to the transmission tunnel and clamps the boot in place. The boots and metal ring are different between early and late model cars.It is also amazing the road noise that a properly sealed boot cuts out.CheersWarren Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/16982-advice-on-fixing-shift-boot/#findComment-135032 Share on other sites
webdawg1 Posted August 21, 2005 Share #5 Posted August 21, 2005 I see these inner shift boots on eBay all the time, and every now and then the metal ring that holds it down. You could probably make one out of thick sheetmetal fairly easy, or get it off of eBay. Attached a couple of pictures that show you what it/they look like when in one piece. webdawg1 Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/16982-advice-on-fixing-shift-boot/#findComment-135054 Share on other sites

seerex Posted August 22, 2005 Share #7 Posted August 22, 2005 the 70 and 71 with the type A tranny have an inner boot and the type b style have the top style one that is held in by the ring . For some reason I thought the early years also had the ring as well. I am sure you could modify it for such . erikgiles Posted August 22, 2005 Author Share #8 Posted August 22, 2005 thanks for all the suggestions! The ring is definielty missing, so I guess I'll hunt for one. Should I use the same weatherstrip adhesive, that is used for the back hatch glass? Also, I still have a contact in Japan so if anyone needs parts which are otherwise impossible to find, lemme know, Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/16982-advice-on-fixing-shift-boot/#findComment-135091 Share on other sites

erikgiles Posted August 22, 2005 Author Share #10 Posted August 22, 2005 Thanks for the feedback! It seems I am getting 2 kids of feedback: awesome! PERFECT! or GROSS IT SUCKS! I like your feedback the best, so I ca take action. WHat kind of wheels should I be lookling at?The purists don't like the color change, some of the guys don't like the wheels, I'm gonna change the wheels, but the color stays. It never mattered much to me what they looked like at the facotry. I care about the striking presence you can create with new, simple paint schemesI like the wheels, but damned few others seem to! WHat's wrong with them? anyway? feedback welcome Anyway, I am looking into getting new rims. seerex Posted August 22, 2005 Share #11 Posted August 22, 2005 Very nice g nose by the way , I think you can still get the boot from MSA or BV , I also have seen them on ebay . I love the color , I think the cars looks top notch but the wheels need to be " more japanese" if that makes sense , when I see the wheels you have on the car i think of american car. I think some watanabe or panasport or maybe ssr would look great. But one step at a time get that shifter boot fixed Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/16982-advice-on-fixing-shift-boot/#findComment-135125 Share on other sites

If you don't have alot of money to spend right now, you could look into putting black steel "D-hole" style wheels on it with chrome lug nuts and maybe chrome center hubs. They're not much money compared to the Panasports or Watanabes and I think they'd look much better than what you have now. I think these wheels give an early "works" look to the Z.Here's one supplier: http://www.uswheel.com/wheels/Daytona87_84.htmHere's another:http://www.bassettwheel.com/steel.htmlYou might have to call them to see if they'll drill them for a Z.
