phil Posted September 7, 2005 Share #1 Posted September 7, 2005 Hey guys, I have a 75 280z that I am restoring. I know the car is a manual because of the clutch, but I do not know if it is a 4 or 5 speed. The previous owner drained all fluids and such before I bought it, so I can't just shift through all of the gears to find out, plus there is no shift knob. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance. e_racer1999 Posted September 7, 2005 Share #2 Posted September 7, 2005 it's probably 5-speed. is the tranny in or out of the car? Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/17183-is-it-a-4-or-5-speed-tranny/#findComment-137291 Share on other sites
Zrush Posted September 7, 2005 Share #3 Posted September 7, 2005 Actually the 5-speed was introduced in 1977 so who knows what it could be. FWIWVicky Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/17183-is-it-a-4-or-5-speed-tranny/#findComment-137312 Share on other sites
jmortensen Posted September 7, 2005 Share #4 Posted September 7, 2005 Let me make sure I fully understand. There is a shifter, but no knob to tell you what the shift pattern is? And there isn't any oil in the transmission? Is that the problem? If that is the case just push in the clutch and shift through all the gears. You won't damage anything at all unless you try to drive it with no oil. sblake01 Posted September 7, 2005 Share #5 Posted September 7, 2005 Vicky beat me to it. Unless the tranny has been changed, it's a 4 speed. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/17183-is-it-a-4-or-5-speed-tranny/#findComment-137317 Share on other sites

jmortensen Posted September 8, 2005 Share #8 Posted September 8, 2005 5 speed from 280Z or ZX bolts straight on. I like the close gearing in the ZX transmission but in order to take advantage you need lower differential gears.
