While in the process of removing the intake manifold to change my headgasket, I noticed this little pipe became disconnected. What is it, and does it look broken? I never "disconnected" it, it just came off. Is it for heating up the intake manifold or something like that?

Can't tell for sure, it's a bad angle. But it looks like it may be the EGR tube. It should probably connect to the bottom of the dashpot (on the end of the intake manifold) that is directly above it in the picture. At least, that's where it goes on the '83 280ZX engine in my car.

What does it look like? How is it shaped? Do you have a picture of the pipe? This stuff would help out alot.

John

There is a link to the pic in my original post...

sblake01, that one you have pictured is the same pipe, only mine came disconnected. Is yours connected in there pretty solid? Mine just came off when I pulled the intake manifold back away from the head. I don't believe I broke anything, but It's not easy to see how it should be connected.

It bolts on pretty solid. Maybe you can see it better in this picture.

I have a related question about the egr tube.

I put an l28 block and exhaust manifold in my 240 and i need to plug the hole for the egr. I felt inside the hole for threads, but couldn't feel any. Since the manifold is in the car already, i can't look into the hole very well. Are there threads so that a bolt can plug the hole? If so, what size? If not, any other suggestions? I have some JB weld at my disposal.

thanks

Just kind of curious why you would use a 280 exhaust manifold? Unless you were going turbo and used the turbo one?

The hole is threaded but I don't know what size the threads are. I wouldn't suggest JB weld. You need to determine what size the threads are and get a plug from a hardware store.

Right. JB weld won't handle the temperatures that close to the exhaust ports.

Is that little pipe segment connected to the exhaust manifold on the aft end? If it is, then it's the EGR tube. They break from heat & vibration. At least mine did.
